Why buy something when you can do the same thing but for free...

Because a lot of people, myself included prefer to use hard buttons on remotes rather than having to look down at a touchscreen device etc. That's the very reason I prefer my Harmony remote to the Pronto I used to have, far more hard buttons and much easier and less distracting to use!

Why buy something when you can do the same thing but for free...

Because some of us have old remotes lying about doing nothing plus a decent remote gives you greater control then CEC. The IR needed to get old and universal remotes working only costs £2 or better still is free if you have an old broken 360 :-)

Out of interest, why are people buying/using usb remotes when there are so many xbmc remote apps for both android and ios?

Because I would have to...

  1. Get up and grab my phone
  2. Swipe to unlock
  3. Swipe to the next screen
  4. Click on the XBMC remote
  5. Click on Remote Control

Far easier to spend £4 and have a dedicated remote near the TV.

Looks like I will be editing /boot/config.txt to get a display. I only have access to VGA at the moment, so have an adaptor. I will need to set hdmi_force_hotplug=1 or similar to boot the display.

It is like my 80286 and DOS 5 days, spending hours editing autoexec.bat and config.sys. I am initially using Raspian and then will try other distros on the Pi.

Not sure you'll have to google it, raspbmc (which I prefer) has a settings page within it's gui for GPIO IR support, looks like this:

Also if people have universal remotes then all they need to buy is the £1.98 TSOP4838 Vishay Photodiode , IR Receiver , 38Khz and then program the remote as if you were setting it up for an xbox 360. Job done and now you have a more comprehensive control of xbmc via a remote :D

Thanks for the tip on the sensor, it always annoyed me a little that i had to use an external IR sensor in the USB port, now i can finally have a nice integrated solution.

Just word of warning though, it doesnt work directly with the latest openelec, you need to make a little mod as per this thread :

Thanks

Got my Pi 2 the other day and been using with Volumio plugged into my HiFi connected to my WD My Book Live and it's "bloody brilliant" can control what's playing via PC, iPad or any device connected to my network

It can also be used as a playback device from my iPad and iTunes running on my PC "best money i've spent in a long time"

Ordered a HiFiBerry DAC the other day to give the audio a boost

struggling to get genesis to work! keep getting script errors, any solutions? oh can someone tell me how to install a working version of mashup?

using 5.03 of openelec, had to use a helix superepo as there was no kodi available, if your using kodi do you have a repo link?
