Raspberry Pi - $35 Linux computer

I notice a lot of people here are using the raspberry pi 3 for htpc.

Just wondering if there is any advantage in using a raspberry pi 3 vs buying a android/openelec box. (eg: a amlogic 802 box w/2gb ram is ~£30)

As far as I'm aware Android still doesn't support the 24p refresh rate on hardware that is capable. OpenElec does however.

I managed to get it working by downloading a newer version of NOOBS and putting it onto a card. The card that was shipped to me was marked as version 1.4, I tried version 1.8 and it booted no problem.

I've now got the Pi 3 stuffed behind the TV running Raspian + RetroPie quite happily, just need to get my bluetooth pad working with it now!

You can dual boot so it doesn't just serve as a HTPC. Quite a few of them are used for projects depending on the user's needs. I read a guide recently on how to use it as an emulator to play old school games which I'm tempted by.

Running costs and just the size of it are other factors to consider too.

My guess is flexibility. If you want to use it as something else it's as simple as putting another Micro SD card in. They're also more fun than those let's be honest :p.

I like raspberry pi for GPIO & projects, was just interested to know if there was any benefit in buying one specifically for htpc :)

Wonder if they will ever have any Zero's in stock for more than 1 per order :(

I have a feeling that H265 will be too heavy for even the Pi3. There are constant developments in H265 support in the Milhouse builds of OpenElec mind.

Without a dedicated hardware decoder, I think 1080P H265 will probably be just out of reach. I'll be more than happy to eat my words, in fact, I want to :D

Ordered mine from thepihut at ~7am on Monday. Had an email yesterday to say it had shipped.

A long time from placing my order to getting it posted out. I get the feeling that thePiHut is a one or two man operation. Sheer volume of orders swamps them.

Nonetheless, any orders I've done that weren't on a big release date have been perfect. I'll keep using them :)

What probably didn't help either was that subscribers to the official MagPi magazine were emailed a special code on 29th February so as to enable them to "Jump to the front of the queue", "Get priority handling of your Pi 3 order" and to "Be first in line if stock is short"!

This won't of course help customers who do not subscribe to the magazine, but might be a factor in explaining some of the delays which they have experienced.

I'd probably recommend CPC if you were looking for decent delivery speed. Looks like they have thousands left for immediate dispatch and are a much bigger company than these other sites.

...or, if you already have an account with them, RS-Online are also a large organisation who are used to dealing with this sort of thing, and who also offer free next day delivery.

Yea, although I was hoping this site was accurate when it stated it can do H265 @1080 30fps.

Pi 3 also has a graphics upgrade, using Broadcom’s 400MHz VideoCore IV, rather than last year’s 250MHz version. The new hardware will support 1080p video at 60fps using the H.264 format, up from 30fps. The new Pi also gains H.265 support for the first time but is limited to 1080p at 30fps.

I plan on trying it out on openelec today, can only hope!

Pretty impressed with its capabilities as a media center so far with kodi, haven't found a video from my library that it wont play yet, also good for watching twitch streams using the twitch add on for kodi.

Thinking of ordering 2 more next week.

Pulled the trigger on this and the 2.5a PSU for £39.50 from RS Online. It's only a pound more then pretty much everywhere else and has next day delivery, so Monday.

Just remembered I can now assign a static IP with my router so I can use my phone to control Kodi without having to check which IP address has been assigned to it every day :D.

Out of curiosity, what would you do with the others? More media streaming for other screens?

My current Pi 3 i have setup as a media center in the living room.

I currently have a not very economic pc acting as a media center and file server in the bedroom, so thinking 1 more to replace that as a media center in the bedroom, another one to run as a file server in a cupboard out the way and probably another one to play about with, so will be 4 in total.
