Its a miracle any of our computers were even able to turn on back in the day considering they had less then a couple of gigs of ram.

Software bloat is modern day curse.

Had an old pc that would boot quickly, browse the net nicely and play a reasonable selection of games on 256mb, now its made out to be an insurmountable task by some software folk who have been relying on massive reserves to cover inefficient code for far too long.

Why did you get rid of it if it was so great?

I think the reason for it, at least in Chrom[e/ium]'s case is a trade-off between memory and performance. Recently, Chrome has been absolutely gobbling RAM but it's to do with all sorts of tweaks they've done to V8. The problem with web-pages is that they're no longer just some text and links like they were a few years back.

You're right though, certainly in other cases due to the hardware glut the amount of code which is just plain old bad has swelled. Intel keep bringing out faster processors, but really, other than true number crunching and gaming, no normal user will hit that amount of processing. (Well, except perhaps video encoding...)

The iPad 1 had 256Meg of ram and that still feels pretty quick/flexible , I cant believe its that much of a constraint.

The difference being Apple create an OS for the iPad and set the spec. ChromiumOS / ChromeOS is an OS created to a minimum spec for hardware developers to construct to. For example the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook has 2GB RAM, 8x that of the RPi. So as you can see, it is a considerable constraint and if Hexxeh says it is, then it is.

First build of Fedora remixed for the RPi is available for download. Highlights include (but not limited to):

  • Programming languages: python, perl, ruby, bash
  • Version control: git
  • System administration tools (command line and/or graphical) for configuring various aspects of the system including the network, date/time, users, and printers
  • Command-line and graphical tools for installing/removing/updating software
  • ssh (secure remote login) and printer services
  • Graphical applications: word processing (AbiWord), spreadsheets (Gnumeric), image editing (GIMP), and web browsing (Firefox)
  • Editors for programming: vim (text mode) and gedit with plugins for file management, terminal, and python console (graphical mode)

I was refering more to the posibilites of the device in general (I can see I didnt make that clear) rather than an attempt to shoehorn a specific OS on to it. No need to jump to the defence of Hexxeh, I wasnt disputing his comments re ChromeOS, I'm not even sure who he is but you clearly have a lot of respect! I'm not really familiar with ChromeOS , If the constraints are so considerable what can it provide that apparently more suitable OS's like Linux cant?

Yes that wasn't clear, thanks for clarifying. Linux is and does run well on low resource devices. While ChromeOS is essentially Linux it has the Chrome layer on top which adds to the resource requirements from the hardware. Because of this I think it might be a while before Chromium (and ChromiumOS) is able to run (well) on an RPi.

Reported 13 posts above ;) :p

Dear Customer

Congratulations! We’re pleased to let you know that you are in the first batch of our registrations for Raspberry Pi. This will mean you will be one of the first to place your order as we are offering Raspberry Pi boards on a first come first served basis and are limiting orders to one per customer. You will shortly receive an invitation to place your order so to help ensure you get your Raspberry Pi as quickly as possible we now require some further information on where you want your Pi delivered.

Please note: we will be accepting payment via Visa Mastercard (credit or debit cards included) or PayPal.

To get the latest updates on Raspberry Pi from RS, follow @RSElectronics on Twitter, or visit our FAQ pages at DesignSpark

Thank you for your continued interest and once again many congratulations.
