They don't really need too. 5V and >700ma is enough information.

There is a list of USB hubs that power the Pi ok, which is useful.

My order has been shipped, what is the cheapest power hub for the PI and do I still need to buy a mains charger if i was to get a hub?

Thanks

See now, I've read powering the Pi from a hub is better as you can then turn of the Pi and all the peripherals at the same time.

I use a Remote mains switch "like a mini remote" to switch it all on at the same time :-)

with this in mind the hard drives and Raspberry can be hidden :-)

Thanks, Well I have just ordered this for now

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330757401...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_1202wt_1396

Then I will get a USB hub later on cause £3 ain't going to break the bank, just going to make sure the Pi works etc, cause I plan on hooking up my external hdd which I doubt would be able to run off that charger alone

mmm I would guess that 700 MA power minimum is not good, not sure powering a non powered USB hard drive is a good idea especially since you may want to plug a Keyboard and a mouse into it, although I use a wirless palm style keyboard with touchpad Model : pkb-1720 It works great with pc's netbooks Raspberry , ryan etc etc

Doh, stop posting about stuff making me want to buy it :p

The Pi was meant to be a cheap option for a media player :D

Yea, I'll buy the usb hub for my external hdd, do you think it would power it?

Depends if they comply to the USB standard as in reality each port should have the current limited to 500mA as specified in the USB2 standard?!?
That said a lot of these chinese/Taiwan company's don't care for rules/spec and no doubt some of these 2A+ powered hubs will allow each port to demand as much current as they like!??!

Just grab yourself a couple of double USB ---> Micro/mini cables, that way even it the hub is limited too 500mA you can use two ports to supply 1A of current to both the Pi and lappy HDD

Well, it was an experiment, and its over.

My RPi will be on eBay shortly. After getting all excited and buying a bunch of peripherals I finally got it setup and networked tonight, only to discover that the RPi wont play DVDs ripped in .VOB format.

I have 400+ DVD rips in VOB.

Shame, it was looking so promising. Looks like I'm back to the plan of a small windows box.

Are they IFO and VOB files or just a single large VOB? If the latter, rename them to .mpg ;) or if the former, makeMKV them.

What is the rating on the ac mains adapter with this please? From what I gather I need around 2.5a output.
Been looking for the right powered hub for nearly two days now. lol I can see the verified peripheral list, though all seem to work differently.

I was set on a D-Link 4 port as they have the 2.5a ac supply, though I can't find one cheaper than £14 delivered so sod that. :)

*Edit. I want to power the pi from the hub, any recommendations would be greatly accepted, blooming headache from searching. :)
