I've just ordered a 512mb to replace my OG 256mb version, I'm hope the increase in speed will make it more usable for a NAS box front end controller that will allow me to remote into it.

Right, I've got a brand new Pi and all the extras ready to go. What's the best guide for installing OpenElec from scratch to a USB stick please?

Raspbmc works great for me and unlike OpenElec looks great as you can remove the GUI res limitation which makes OpenElec look nasty imho!
However my Pi is heavily overclocked (1.1GHz CPU / 500MHz GPU, RAM, PIPE ..etc) and I'm also running XBMC off a 16Gb Corsair GT USB 2 pen which actually runs faster than a quicker (Spec. wise) Kingston Performance SD card.

The MilhouseVH nightly Gotham builds found on the xbmc forum in the raspberry pi sub-forum allow you to change the res to 1080p and remove the GUI res limit. They have a million other optimisations too.

I'm still on OpenELEC at the moment because I couldn't find a fix for the problems I had with raspbmc (the pi would eventually boot up with total loss of its network interface; this would persist through reboots and anything I tried until eventually I would be forced to reinstall everything to get it working again). OpenELEC has been rock solid for months and months though...

The only (probably XBMC) issue I get is that sometimes when I watch a video it toggles the "watched" state on that file, but then after a second or so it toggles again back to "off"... Resulting in me having to manually "Mark as watched" afterwards, which is very annoying - anybody else seen this?

I'll create a torrent for it

Has a quick readme in there, says what to do and has links to that guy's Youtube videos.

I also went for the Sweetbox II case, with heatsinks. Purely for the looks :D

Cheers. I've got everything now. Can I get away without using ethernet? I have a nano wifi adapter.. my Pi is miles away from my router!

Love that case, very cool.

Thanks for the downloads, but I can't get them. I guess you're offline :p Upload them to rapidshare or something maybe?

Should I expect my USB keyboard (with touchpad) to work straight away, or will I need to install drivers? I'm assuming I'll need drivers for the wifi dongle.

After being round my mates house and seeing his Pi its given me the bug to get one.

Well - won one for £18, its the later model with all the bits to get going.

I want to use it to stream with, but what else could I do?

I am looking to put raspbmc on.

any other ideas?

Thanks

Phil

On a side note, could it be powered from a usb port on a sky box?

Unlikely... it's not impossible but I believe the "official" spec on the power from a standard USB port is something like 500mA... Whereas the pi requires a minimum of 750mA officially but many people agree you ideally want at least 1A

All you can do is try, but if you have any problems the power level coming from the port will almost certainly be the cause

hope to get it Thursday and go from there :)

apart from streaming I have no idea what I can do with it - but I will get raspbmc on it and play :)
