Raspberry Pi - $35 Linux computer

I might have a play with setting up a download box + NAS type device. Does anyone know of a suitable distro, or something I can install ontop of Raspbian so I can have a web GUI to manage drives partitions and shares etc?

Webmin on top of just about any distro is a brilliant all in one package for this. Then a torrent client of your choice,personally been using Deluge for a couple of years now

If you paid extra for next day delivery, and didn't order it too late yesterday you should in fact receive it today, as they use UPS.

Once completed your order details should include a tracking reference, so that you can see when it will be delivered.

Is that on the R-pi2?

I know that it was limited to that on the R-pi B due to the lack of CPU grunt, but with the R-pi2 having a faster CPU we should be able to get better throughput through the USB bus.
 
So I ordered the R-PI2 from RS at 4:50pm on monday.
Checked the stock levels, there were 150+ ready for dispatch.
Tuesday @ 5:15pm I get an email stating they have run out and the units are on backorder for 20/2/15.

Now I understand demand is high but what really peeves me is I know several people who ordered after 5pm on monday and still received their r-pi2 the next day even though they didnt pay for next day delivery.

I cancelled my order with RS and ordered from Farnell.
Hopefully it should arrive tomorrow, and then I will be chucking OSMC on there.

Yup

Doesn't have a gigabit port, only 100. Apparently if they changed the port to a gigabit one (albeit limited by the USB2 bus), then it would break a lot of compatibility with other things.

That is bad service indeed, and not what you expect from a company such as RS, although as I may have mentioned before, my theory is that they concentrated on fulfilling orders from resellers first (they are a trade distributor after all) and leaving the single orders to go right to the back of the queue.

I did not order mine from CPC until 18:40 on Monday, and decided to pay a bit extra for next day delivery.

It was duly delivered by UPS on Tuesday, so I was more than happy.

All the excitement of the Pi2 reminded me I have a Pi model B sitting at home doing nothing and thought that there must be something useful it could be used for.

When I initially got it I was thinking of using it as a media player but at the time XBMC was really slow and clunky on it and in the meantime I've got myself 3 now tv boxes which are doing that job nicely.

I was wondering about setting it up along with a USB hard drive to serve up my music collection but so far haven't found a really simple guide for doing so (any ideas anyone?)

Does anyone else have any ideas for something useful it could be doing for me, ideally running headless so it can be tucked away under my stairs hooked up to my router, also, ideally really easy to set up as I don't have a clue about Linux etc??
 
Does anyone know where I can get a short (~6") USB to USB cable? I want to connect an external drive to the Pi without having a massive cable making a mess of the setup. All I can find are either extenders or USB to Micro USB etc.
 
I saw that one but it's still a little too big to be honest. Does anyone know how the retractable USB cables perform, will it have an impact on the speed of an external drive?

I called RS earlier to cancel my order only to be told it shipped earlier today and will be with me tomorrow. :) Lets hope it does.
 
Ok so not the best start, I downloaded noobs, copied the files onto my sd card, inserted that to the pi, plugged in hdmi, my wireless keyboard an mouse adapter and lan cable and then lastly the power cable connected to a 2a tablet charger and nothing is coming up on my display, I've got a green and red light on the pi?

edit!!!!!!! bloody sdcard had popped out and away we go
