Mine is finally on the way.
Pi-hut have updated their Pi5 pre order page.

If you placed your order before 28/09/23 10:00 (UK Time), we estimate these pre-orders will start shipping at the end of October and early November. **We have started shipping these orders, however we are waiting for further stock from Raspberry Pi to complete this batch**

I'm wanting to just take the external SSD my Pi 4 is running on and drop in the Pi 5 as a replacement.

Possible?

And that would be "apt full upgrade" ?
Nope.

Raspberry Pi say this:

We have always said that for a major version upgrade, you should re-image your SD card and start again with a clean image. In the past, we have suggested procedures for updating an existing image to the new version, but always with the caveat that we do not recommend it, and you do this at your own risk.

This time, because the changes to the underlying architecture are so significant, we are not suggesting any procedure for upgrading a Bullseye image to Bookworm; any attempt to do this will almost certainly end up with a non-booting desktop and data loss. The only way to get Bookworm is either to create an SD card using Raspberry Pi Imager, or to download and flash a Bookworm image from here with your tool of choice.

Taken from here.

Nope.

What about swapping a Pi 4 for a Pi 4. I have an original rev 1 and now have a rev 1.5 that has a higher stock clock.

What do I need to make sure is the same to just drop and swap?

I have multiple Pi4s bought at different times from launch until recently and I've never had an issue moving SD cards between them. I don't know what else I can say really.
