Sexy Beast

7/10

Not one of Ray Winstone's best but had it's moments, Ben Kingsleys character holds the film up, he plays "nutter-type" surpisingly well.

The Hills Have Eyes

Awesome movie, stylish and well-written, with shocks and gore that are rare nowadays. Jumped out of my skin in some places and loved every second of it. Will buy this on DVD. :)

DVD rental

Revolver

Guy Ritchie film, wish i'd never let my girlfriend waste £3 renting it. probably the worst film i've seen in months (genuinely mean that). One good character in the whole film (a bespectacled hitman, absolutely nails), a script that thinks it's about 100x cleverer than it is, and a plot that got lost about 10 minutes into the movie. Don't rent it... please. :(

Blade (1) - 9/10

Classic action film IMO. Enough of a story line and plenty of action!!

fozzybear - IMO Blade 2 was a fairly decent film, but not as good as the first, but it has some good scenes.

Blade 3 was poor overall. Action wasnt as good and far too much iPOD pimpage... for god sake they even had a the girl making a playlist!! That is not important character development and shouldnt be in any film.

I went to the Cinema at the weekend with my woman, to see 2 For The Money, it started out as a good film lots of twists and turn, or so I thought. But with each new twist just went no where and the plot gets screwed up, the ending was very poor, and was not true to the film

5/10 :(

Corpse Bride - Beautifully animated gothic fairytale directed by Tim Burton. Similar in style to the Nightmare Before Christmas. A great voice cast and a brilliant score with an occaisional musical number from Danny Elfman. Finally a Tim Burton film which doesn't leave you feeling slightly disappointed at the end. 8/10 :)

Lucky Number Slevin - 9/10

Well cast film with twists and turns that will either keep you guessing all the way to the end or you'll see what's going on early....and still enjoy it.
Almost too clever for its own good, but not quite.

The cat returns (anime)

Fantasy Adventure from none other than studio ghibli.

A beautifully animated story of a young girl who rescues a cat that turns out to be The Cat Kings son.
As a reward she is invited to the cat kingdom, only then to find out the kings intends her to be married to his son.

Her decision... stay in the cat kingdom or return home

For a change I watched this dubbed as I was a little tired and couldnt be fussed with subtitles, the VA's did a marvellous job, a very entertaining and witty plotline with a couple of good twists. All in a highly entertaining film which I would recommend to even non anime fans.

9/10

See http://www.ghibliworld.com for info about this and other movies from the legendary studio ghibli

Syriana

I went to see this after having been told by 3 friends how confusing and incomprehensible they found it, and they're all intelligent people, and I like a challenge to I thought I'd give it a go. My thoughts on leaving the cinema were that Syriana was a very powerful film with a powerful message, but didn't have me as absorbed as it could have done. This is the complete opposite of a 'no-brainer' movie, I don't know what the right term would be, but it does require a lot of concentration to follow properly. That might put some people off, but then again those kind of films appeal to others. George Clooney is excellent (as always), and I also think that Matt Damon is very well cast. For those who are unaware of how the oil business works and the political involvement, then this film is one to open your eyes to it. However, there are a few dubious loose odds and ends that probably have a valid meaning, but are very vague, and made me think that maybe this film was trying to be too intelligent for it's own good.

Ride with the Devil

Rented from Netflix mainly because I want to see all of Ang Lee's back catalogue :)

US Civil War drama/romance

It was very nicely shot (as you would expect) and the performances were excellent. It didn't really seem to go anywhere tho and was bordering on dull to be honest. The ending was also really sudden and extremely low key. Technically a very good film but just didn't have much life to it.

7.5/10

Rented; Forrest Gump

I seen this film years ago. But just passingly.

I decided to rent it out, and my, does it push some buttons. Very sad film, with some hilarious moments. It kept me wanting more at the end, even though the conclusion was amazing.

10/10

Cinema; The Hills Have Eyes

I was a little suprised at this. I was expecting (and in the mood for) a nice little no-brainer teen-horror film, but I given just a little more. Some nice shocks, gore and at least a little bit more imagination went into the whole thing.

6.5/10

The Chamber

Recorded this off SKY a few weeks back and got round to watching it again. Gene Hackman and Chris O'Donnel lay the Grandfather and Rookie lawyer respecitevley in this John Grisham reproduction. Hackman is on Death Row for murdering 2 human rights activists 30 years before hand.

A few twists and turns along the way. However if you have read book avoid the movie. The film doesnt capture the mood or some of the drama of the book imho. It misses an opportunity to be above average

Lokis score 6/10

cinema - syriana
slow moving, but intellegent. quite enjoyed it as i'm a sucker for the whole cia scene :D matt damon was great, in fact he is a lot of the time, i have no idea why i'm so reluctant to say that. george clooney was good, not oscar good however. overall it was a good storyline, if not a little confusing and slow moving.

dvd - garden state

Dawn of the Dead (dir: Zack Snyder, 2004).

For a remake this is a fresh production, it takes the basics of the orignal and turns it into a gore ridden action flick. By that I mean don't expect lots of scares, this is more of an action film (i.e modding the buses to take out zombies, also the whole group acting more like an ametuer military). The cast is quite good, not brilliant but still well enough to understand them on a basic level, though some of the characters come off quite cheesy (the copper for exanple, mr big macho man). What I think makes this a good remake which seprates it from most is down to the zombies, they're fast, gorey and kinda freaky which adds to the action and gives some little jumps, which I feel the original did not have, I didn't get much of a claustrophobic feel from it when you could litarally skip your way out, meaning the actors came of as dumbasses.

Overall 7/10.

Though Haly will disagree.

Slevin - Very very good, the end twist you can't see coming at all and is really enjoyable throughout with bits of comedy thrown in. Leading actor is really good and of course Lucy Lui! :D

Bit slow to get started though imo.

8.5/10

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Extended DVD) - 9/10 - I love this film, and the others that were released. Such a great story (i know it's not an original story, but it's great :p) Characters are awesome and the locations are REALLY beautiful. I'd love to live in Hobbiton.

Howls' Moving Castle

8/10

Another of Miyazaki's Anime films, visually very well done with some great animation, and characters.
Highly entertaining and very enjoyable, however it is I think let down by the feeling that towards the end it is a bit rushed with plot elements being bought together a bit too quickly.

Like most Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli films it's worth watching, and has the usual spark that seems to be common to all of them, however it's not one of the best (compared to some it's pretty weak).

See, not all dubs are bad:p
It's worth giving most new anime releases a go dubbed, as often the modern dubs are fairly good.
