Hostle

Went to see Hostle last night, was ok i suppose nowhere near as scary as i was told it was. A decent watch but has some gruesome bits in it!

Took the kids (great excuse eh?) to see Ice Age 2: The Meltdown. Some very funny slapstick stuff with the little critter and the acorn reminiscent of Wile E Coyote. Brilliant send-up of Oliver! with all the vultures singing "Food Glorious Food!". Not a Shrek or Toy Story but a reasonably polished animated movie with a little for the adults and lots for the kids.

The Island

I actually thought it was pretty good. Some genuinely funny moments, and Steve Buscemi steals the show in yet another great cameo. Probably would have done better without the misleading title though - The Island isn't really an intrinsic part of the plot but a hingepin to make the plot work. If it had been a luxury apartment block that the characters aspired to be sent to I doubt they'd have called the film 'The Apartments'.

7/10

I watched this last night and quite enjoyed it. It had some really bad continuity errors and a couple of plot holes but the set pieces more than made up for it. The scenes with Ewan MacGregors characters were excellent, the motorway chase was one of the best I've ever seen and the bit on the side of the skyscraper was stunning. For an action movie it gave you quite a lot to think about and it was very clever in parts.

Did you spot the helicopter pilot, who fell to his death in the skyscraper scene, and then turned up again later when landing back at the harvesting facility?

I agree, though, decent film just a shame about all the errors in it.

Last film I saw was Dark Water on DVD. This is just another of those average films that goes a long at an average pace with not a lot going on. It tries to be spooky and a bit scary, but I just picked up that it was trying to be and wasn't. Pretty decent cast as well, including Jennifer Connelly, John C.Reily, Tim Roth, Dougray Scott and Pete Postlethwaite.

Could have been a lot better, but it never gets going and the plot is pretty transparent and the ending fairly obvious.

Mary Poppins - 7/10

Never been a big fan of this form (or others like it such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) but I sat and watched it finally after buying the 40 year anniversary edition a while back. ANyway, to my suprise, I enjoyed it quite a bit. I was singing along to a couple of the songs, and can't help but smile when Dick Van Dyke is involved. Specifically enjoyed the rooftop scene, and can see where some of the inspiration for the Bamboo song in CCBB came from!

The Island is the only thing that they live for and the only thing that gives them hope. Then when they find out the truth itll be everything theyve ever hoped down the toilet.. :( It is a rather important element to the story if not common throughout the film.

Without trying to give obvious spoilers...

I felt that the film focussed more on the resulting fight for justice than the initial masquerade of their existence though. After the revelation by the main characters, the concept of 'The Island' falls behind and, ultimately, it doesn't matter what name you give to the utopia they yearn for. I could give a better explanation of why I think the title doesn't work but it would blow the whole plot open for those that haven't seen it. Either way, I don't think a change of title would have saved it from being a box office flop, despite it not being a bad film at all. :)

But anyway...

Wedding Crashers

Being a big fan of both Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn I was sure that I'd like this film. I was not wrong. They play off each other with great chemistry, Vaughn talking a mile a minute and Owen doing the sleazebag turned lovestruck puppy with aplomb. The supporting cast is superb, if a little cliched, with Christopher Walken, Rachel McAdams and even Isla Fisher turning in very good comedy performances. Always nice to see Will Ferrel make an appearance too. The two leads make the characters believeable, and needless to say I laughed my ass off all the way through.

9/10 - I ordered the DVD immediately after watching this on rental.

Mr and Mrs Smith

Bearing in mind that Mr and Mrs Smith and Wedding Crashers just happened to be the next two rentals on my list, imagine my surprise when not only did Vince Vaughn pop up in the former, but that he regularly quotes lines directly from the script of the latter. Very weird.

Anyway, this was a much darker film than I was anticipating. The first half an hour or so is extremely bleak but not unwatchable. Seeing the two most attractive examples of the male and female species stuck together in a mundane, suburban, loveless, sexless marriage was somewhat unbelievable but ultimately worked. If you can look past the insanely over the top technology and slightly weird and contrived plot then it actually turns out to be a pretty good caper and of course both leads end up giving enthusiastic and passionate performances despite the initial deception of them being soulless and automatic.

Turns out to be a good action flick as well as intriguing to watch the flame rekindle as they try and do each other in (I said the plot was odd!). The angle of working it as a series of marriage counselling sessions works quite nicely too.

Flight Plan.
It was ok , started off well but I thought the ending let it down a bit.
Some half decent story twists but not exactly sixth sense like.
Jodie Foster , as always , was excellent and this along with a few pretty air hostesses pushed it to a 7/10.

Equilibrium - 3/10

Some interesting ideas, executed poorly, with such massive 'I really want to be the matrix' overtones to be a bit cringe worthy. Horribly predictable plot too. Nice fight scenes though.

Silent Hill

Probably the worst film I have seen in years. I am unable to think of anything positive AT ALL to say about it.
