RC cars

Hi all - incoming RC newbie here,

My 3yo son got a toy RC car for his birthday and loves when I chase him round on his ride-on car with it, but it reminded me that I used to have fun when I was growing up with RC cars. I've got no idea now what's good or bad but I think I'm looking for an electric RTR road car (possibly drift - looks like fun), decent battery life (if that's even possible), certainly something that can have a spare battery and fast-charger. I'm thinking road car because we have a large courtyard out the front of our group of houses where he rides his cars/bike/scooter, so would be a good place to do it and may also drive in the house (stone floor), so would need to have good variable speed control. It's for me to drive not him :)

Budget is approx £120-180. Is hobbyking THE place to buy from?

Personally I buy batteries, chargers, speed controllers and motors from Hobbyking.

The hobbyking selection of cars isn't great. Having said that I'm currently racing a M Rage mini touring car and it's great fun.

I would look for a rally type car - the Hobbyking one isn't great as it's just a touring car with open diffs and a metal chassis.

Have a look on Modelsport for 1/10 rally cars. There should be something to fit your budget.

Thanks for the info. Is the HPI Sprint 2 a good chasis? What's the difference between the sport, flux and the drift versions? Is flux just HPI's brandname for brushless?

Anyone have any experience of the Absima TR02v2 (formerly known as the Team C Jekyll)?

Also used to be sold as the Ansmann Mad Rat before Ansmann pulled out the market.

I've built these up from a kit and had to strip and repair many a time! Not sure how much they are now but used to be a very good fun RC car for the price. My lad uses it still. They can run Brushless without to much trouble, only real problem we get is occasionally stripping the large plastic gear in the diff. Spares are readily available still.

I don't know if they have changed now it is Absima but get an uprated bearing kit if that is not standard. I also got uprated suspension, C holders and a T-Bone bumper, the bumper has easily made its money back in saved repair costs multiple times over.

Basically a good buggy for a bit of fun.

Had a bit of time off work after hernia opp and got bored. I've had a 1/24th model pajero for a while but never got round to building it. Decided i wanted to make it RC instead. Wanted to make a proper scaler but the track and wheelbase are off so will just be a bit of fun monster truck instead.

Need to paint the shell to match my 1:1 toy :)

A bit over my original budget but what do people think of these choices? Anyone got experience of using an HPI? How is the controller that comes with these, am I likely to want to replace it in time?

HPI Sprint 2 Drift RTR Nissan 350Z
HPI Sprint 2 Sport RTR 69 Mustang RTR-X
HPI RS4 Sport 3 Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5
HPI E10 Touring RTR Ford Mustang 2013

I like the fact that these are waterproof and contain everything I need to get started. Are there any accessories I should be buying straight off? I would like recommendations for spare battery pack and fast charger but unsure what else I might need.

I'm not sure if anyone here is into RC Cars etc but on the off chance I'm looking for some advice and recommendations.

Quite a while ago I had a Traxxas Jato 3.3 (Nitro) and it was good fun, however, I couldn't get my head around the engine tuning etc and half the time I couldn't even start it.

I now want to get another RC something but think I'll go Electric to avoid the trouble I had with Nitro (although I will miss the sound)

So the question is what to get, I used to use the Jato on an old airfield and a little off road. I'm not sure exactly where I'll use this one so I'm confused on what to get. I don't want a road car type and I will not be using it on good tarmac/surface. A monster truck I think is just too big.. so I'm thinking either a stadium truck or a buggy.

The ones that's catch my eye are:

Traxxas Rustler VXL (TSM)
https://traxxas.com/products/models/electric/rustler-vxl-tsm

and a HPI Vorza Flux
https://www.hpiracing.com/en/kit/101850

The HPI looks nice but is expensive and from what I can see needs 2 batteries for about 20 mins run time

I keep thinking I need the speed (the Jato did 65mph) but not sure if those figures are distracting me.

The Rustler looks good but is very but not sure if the handling is good, a lot of the videos on Youtube show it flipping a lot.

So any recommendations would be great!

Vorza is over piced. Personally i have always avoided most HPI models. If you havent already, you might want to check out MSUK forum.

Also consider an electric car kit and buying your own electrics. Also consider 2nd hand.

I would be looking at Losi, Hobao, hong nor etc. I would recommend a truggy as an overall do it all car. Decent handling and can cope with the bumpier stuff.

If you want speed, a 150A esc should cope with 6s in something 1:8 scale. 1:10 scale short course trucks can also be good fun.

Really depends what you want the car for. Planning on racing?

Thanks Ill check out MSUK.

I'm not sure buying a kit is a great idea for me to start, I mean it's a good idea but I'm sure I'd mess it up so probabl looking at a RTR.

Based on the above what Losi would you recommend? is the Traxxas Rustler VXL a decent car.

Wheelspin do a 3S pack with charger that could be ok : http://www.wheelspinmodels.co.uk/i/253242/

As for racing, nothing planned only against friends if I can talk anyone into buying one :)

In terms of Losi I would look at the electric 8ight and 8ight T (truggy). But they also do short course trucks too whichis also an option.

Im not a fan of Wheelspin models, i prefer Modelsport and JE Models. Guys there are great, whereas i have used Wheelspin and wasnt impressed. They also have issues with stock - and i have ordered stuff in shadow stock and waited over a fortnight.

Traxxas stuff is pretty good. Do you want 2wd or 4wd? They also do the slash which is a short course truck and even though its 1:10 its a pretty big car.

I've had a look and can only see the 8ight T in kit form or a mini 8ight.

I phone Model Sport today and they were pretty helpful but the reason I looked at Wheelspin for the Rustler is there packs came with official traxxas batteries and charger.

As for 2WD or 4WD, I guess 4WD would be nice but I guess my options become more limited.

Had a Rustler, but quickly sold it as 2WD cars suck.

It also tended to wheelie all the time and so become uncontrollable.

That's interesting as that's the bit I was refering to in my first post when I saw a lot on youtube flipping over after wheelie all the time.

What did you change it for?
