i know this might get me thrown out, but i have to admit, ive owned and raced loads of RC cars in the past, but to this day ive never got my hands on a Tamiya. are they really as bad as some people make out, or are they more for nostalgia these days

Tamiya TRF cars are highly competitive at pro level.

A lot of their kits are aimed at scale modellers though and in that regard many of their kits are a class above the competition for replicas of the real thing. The XV01 Lancia Delta rally car for example.

The regular kits are very good but a different market to Hpi/Traxxas etc.

The older classic and reissue kits have their limits though because a) they were designed c30 years ago b) people wonder why when running a 3s lipo and 5.5t motor on an old design disintegrates the gearbox and c) a crash at 50mph shears a car in half that was designed for 10-20mph.

Much like apple Tamiya rc kits are a self contained eco system designed to be run with Tamiya Motors, Mods/Hop Ups and ESCs etc.

Hi, my 13 year old son has asked for a rc car for xmas, he wants a proper one and not a argos special, so i've been doing a bit of research and decided a battery powered one would be best for now.

So would this be a good start http://www.wheelspinmodels.co.uk/i/178751/

Requirements are speed and durability, budget is £150-200.

I have a FTX carnage, nice truck for the price and easy to get spares.

The HPI Firestorm is a great buggy but under £200 it would be brushed motor, nothing wrong with it though, it can run lipo but you will need a low voltage alarm.

Brushed esc does not measure voltage and if it drops too low you can kill the lipo battery.

How often should a Lipo be topped up roughly if stored at 40%?

To 3.85v per cell (which is a storage charge), and cycle once a month, by charging and taking back down to whatever you want. But remember to never go below LVC. Make sure your ESC is set to shutoff at an LVC. Once done, charge back up to 3.85v per cell and store.

I spent many thousands on rc cars in the past from a few petrols, brushless, nitro.

Quit years ago but got the bug for some toys again. I loved the HPI Baja I had but it was a money pit. Tempted again though.
I spent around £5000 on RC cars & RC Trucks & loads of RC gear last year and then I lost all interest in by the end of winter..:(

no chance I'm spending that much! budget is 500 tops, knowing me I'll be bored of it after a week. Plan is that I hope its something me son will pickup on and get his butt of the PS4 and outside ;)

Got my heart set on the Savage XS Flux so thats the model chosen - it doesn't come with batteries or charger though.

Question - Any particular batteries and / or chargers to go for? Gunna stick with a 2S battery for now. Modelshop do a deal which includes the charger and a Lipo 7.4v 2S battery - shall I just go for that or can anyone recommend something better? ta

EDIT: Also - how long do these lipo batteries take to charge and actually last in real time use please? - Is it like the good old days of like a 7hour charge just for 5 minutes of fun or have we progressed on since Nicd?

I get all my lipos from hobbyking, website is rubbish but prices are great.

I've bought loads of turnigy batteries and all have worked well..

https://hobbyking.com/en_us/batteries/lipoly-all-brands.html

I buy my Lipos from here too.

Don't really bother with storage charging or anything like that. Charge, use, put away till next time. I've got packs 4 odd years old and they are fine and still useable for racing.

woah! - so modelshop are charging £75 extra for a 2S battery, charger and storage case.

https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-neutron-200w-dc-touch-screen-balance-charger-lihv-capable.html

Looking at that its only about £40 for a high-end charger and tenner for battery??? how the heck are modelshop justifying their price??

Do I really NEED a storage case for the battery?

You need to charge them in a sack, I use the one linked below

https://hobbyking.com/en_us/lithium-polymer-charge-pack-18x22cm-sack.html

I have never had one blow up but have a look on YouTube, when they go they are scary.

thanks bud,

Any comments on the charger? Modelshop are recommending this one: Overlander RC6-VSP 80watt 7A Output AC/DC Charger

Theres also the one I've linked above.....

oh and average discharge time please? 5 minutes per run or we got more leway these days? ta
