RC cars

That looks a heck of a first car. Hope he enjoys it. Would be interested to know what you think about it when you get it. I've been looking at these type of more modern cars.
I toyed with the idea of getting him a sub £100 car but figured it’d break pretty quickly and I’d end up buying a more expensive one next time, so jumped straight to the Traxxas (plus in honesty it’s a toy for me too ;)) Seems as close to indestructible as a toy can get... will let you know how it goes. The 50% training mode was also a bonus whilst he learns to control it.

@Yrkoon It is a Land Rover one. It was unmarked and barely used until this weekend but the nippers helped me fix that. It has lights on it too. I have some photos of it somewhere, I will dig them out.

It was a birthday present and I enjoyed building it. That is mostly why I wanted to rebuild the old buggy I found.

ah that sounds prety sweet :D

@Yrkoon I found some photos I took when making it.

It is good fun around the back garden.

built the lunch box this morning and just done the 5th shock mod as i had snapped the little springs already lol

ill probably do some little mods to it now like reinforcing the front of the chassis etc oh and i really want a light kit on it, between seeing dads wee crawler with lights and how good evilthecats defender looks im well after some basic lights for it :)

freshly finished

yeh that is an amazing first car u have one lucky kid :)

i have a traxxas bandit that i converted to brushless years ago and it is almost unbreakable, got a rustler as well and it seems to be tree proof, put some hyper 7 shocks on the back of the rustler recently and it went about 4 foot in the air and hit a tree at a dodgy angle, all that happened was a shock popped off, yeh tree proof and the rustler has a 6000kv motor :p

my bandit is more sensible 3300kv never used the massive optional pinion that came with it and using 2s :)

if you manage to break a part replace it with a rpm part/ rpm bumpers and motor guards kick ass :)

@Yrkoon The Lunchbox looks really good. You have a decent collection of cars and spares in the background too!

What's the 5th suspension modification? Is it adding one additional shock somewhere to stiffen up the suspension or something?

it arrived today and we had our first bash around the garden with it this evening. First impressions are that the build quality is excellent, functionality is simple, the speed is spot on for him at 50% (training mode), and the grip of this thing is phenomenal. He enjoyed it most skidding around on the gravel drive. I managed to flip it off a 4ft drop onto concrete which punched a tiny hole in the side window of the body but otherwise not a mark on it from the fall

I also got the Traxxas 8.4v NiMH 5000mah and 4amp Traxxas ID charger. The charger is a bit noisier than expected but charged the battery in 40 mins.

Very happy.

Took these for a spin today with my son, in a dry and dusty park area. So much fun throwing it into the air :)

We have that charger - it's pretty quick :)
The car can take some abuse but be ready to start fixing parts. The standard Rustler drive shafts snap very easy and we have replaced them with some upgraded metal versions.

yeh the gear box has a straight axle going through and there are grooves on the chassis which let it slide up and down on each side unlike the grass hopper that just has holes. the little leaf springs are stupid and next to useless and the gear box and motor tend to slap around under power, putting a shock on the middle of the gear box eliminates the need for they silly springs and stops the gear box slapping forward and back :)

these are the springs it came with lol https://www.modelsport.co.uk/tamiya-lunch-box-springs/rc-car-products/25380

mort glad you are happy with the traxxas they really take a pounding :D

Is there a common place where you all buy your rc stuff, I've wanted to pull the trigger for ages.
I didn't buy RC stuff for many years but these were the 2 main ones at the time I was into this hobby
https://www.modelsport.co.uk/
https://wheelspinmodels.co.uk/

there was also a small independent shop with a website that had amazing customer service
I can't remember the name though maybe someone else knows the one?

if you wanna go cheap maybe hobbyking but on their site when browsing make sure you untick the global warehouse unless your fine with stuff coming from china.
A lot of their stuff used to be clones of official products but poorer quality, they do make a lot of their own stuff too though probably more so these days.

I had a 250heli kit clone from their chinese warehouse ages ago a lot of people were doing the same, then any parts that broke on the clone kit they just replaced them with the official parts from the proper company :D that company being "Align" expensive as hell

I've used Modelsport and they've been good.

Also some of the smaller scale people were really helpful for the parts for the Cougar 2000. I bought bits from Muzzoomm Models, Schumie Spares, RC Bearings, Penguin Custom Bodyshells and Thirteen Racing. All seemed pretty reasonably priced and were keen to help get the right parts.

well been busy with the lunchie again, put foam in the tyres and glued them, then i reinforced the wheelie bar with a turnbuckle and a plastic one so now any impacts on the wheelie bar will get absorbed by 3 different points on the gear box :)

i also used a turn buckle to reinforce the front of the chassis at the top of the suspension, so far all the mods have cost nothing :D

edit: forgot to put a pic of the 5th shock up, had to hack saw and scalpel a slot into the gear box big enough for the bottom of the shock to go in then i put the metal bar back through which holds the bottom of the shock firmly in place, just used a tiny handdrill to make a hole in the top and fitted a shock bracket to it which sorts out the top mount, pretty simple mod but took a while to figure out trying different ones and had to move my esc :)
