RC cars

Decided to build something a bit smaller - as finding places to run 10th scale stuff is proving quite tricky!

DMS have now become the disty for LC Racing - so they are finally available again, I went for the buggy (kit version) with electrics: https://www.dms-racing.com/index.ph...d=39820&virtuemart_category_id=470&Itemid=533
They also have truck and monster truck versions in 1/14th (some come as kits, some as RTR), 1/14 scale should be a bit more usable in the garden :) so I'm thinking tiny fast truck would be a nice place to end up, with a taller body and slightly bigger wheels than ship with the kit.

Teeny tiny oil filled diffs (5p for scale) - were quite fiddly to build:

Hopefully will get finished soon :D:

@BongoHunter man that little buggy looks ace.

I run a Tekno EB48 2.0 and was thinking 10th scale next, but yeah that looks great for bombing around the garden. Mine garden would be still too small, but I can go round the parents have have some fun on their lawn.

And the postman just brought my next project!

Got some bits (bearings and hex screws) for it coming over the next few days and then I can start putting it together :D

Not ever had a crawler/scaler type model, so will be interesting to build I think - and its one of the newest Tamiya chassis so should go together well (and made from the new reinforced plastic they have started using)

Nice, look forward to some chassis shots. I took fairly well modded CC01 on my last Chernobyl trip and have been umming about whether to take the CC01 next time or something different. I took my B74 as well as there's a fantastic astro track in Kiev.

I put plans in place to take some guys out to race over the weekend then a day trip to Chernobyl. Sadly Covid got in the way. Next year though :)

Any pics!? :)
Was very tempted to get a Cc01, 25 year old design now and proper classic Tamiya - I think I would have gone for the Unimog if I'd got an 01.

I'll be posting some build pics once I can get started :D

This CC01 became the bane of my life in 2019. Was a pig modifying certain parts and almost all the GPM upgrades were rubbish. JunFac and Yeah Racing parts all fitted pretty well. Cut the big block off the front. GMade dampers are lovely. RC4WD wheels and tyres. The body isn't 1/10 so had to use some fairly chunky extenders to get the wheels to sit right in the arches. Interior is part DIY part robbed from the 1/8 Eaglemoss Delorean BTTF kit (the dash lights up 88mph :D )

Unfortunately, I forgot the GoPro so borrowed a mates for the Duga visit. Didn't get as much footage as a wanted too as I've got into a habit of spending most of the my time in the zone drunk :) Funnily enough, should have been there this week.

We have a couple of guides called Sergei and one has lots of gold teeth so naturally - Gold Tooth Sergei. The CC01 quickly became Red Door Sergei :)

This is a link to the Astro track in Kiev (its a tad slow). The RC scene is quite small over there but they all use up to date cars and are very good racers. I am going to try the RC trp again as soon as Covid calms down.

I use half saddle pack batteries and they lasted nearly an hour each. Helps put a little weight over the back too.

RC noob here. What would be a good RC car to get based on the following requirements?
- about £150-£200
- fairly easy to maintain
- hopefully some upgrade potential if possible (e.g. longer lasting or better battery later)
- something that can handle some offroad/wont break quickly (had a mardave mini back in the day which was great fun but couldn't handle even a dropped curb), so maybe a 'buggy' style(?)
- just want something fun to play with for 30mins or so
- available in the UK

Any general (basic) advice of what to look for would be great.
Thanks!

Is that £200 all in, so receiver, transmitter batteries etc..

Yes, hoping to get something to start at £200 all in. As with all hobby stuff, happy to spend a bit more if there's something way better for not a huge amount more
Probably 10th scale at that price range for an RTR.

This brand seems to be generally acknowledged as good, and parts supply looks fine.

8th scale you need to add another £130+ to get something like a Hyper V SE.

Someone might be able to suggest other RC classes that come in closer to £200...

I'd go for a Tamiya Sand Viper (DT-02)

Out of the box it's more than good enough, and already has bearings etc: https://www.modelsport.co.uk/tamiya-sand-viper-dt-02-/rc-car-products/25688

Lots of hopups if you fancy them - though nothing on that car is really essential to put on out of the box. Modelsport do bundles with that car that includes everything needed to get started for less than £200 I beleive.

Edit: The Team Associated CR12 trucks look like good value at the moment as well

Brushless carnage

Few pics of my Tamiya CC02 build - not quite complete yet as I'm awaiting a few hopups to be delivered.

I swapped all the standard self taping screws for some M3 steel hex screws, and got a set of bearings to replace the bushings in the kit:
K8Tzj8e.jpg

Central gearbox gets build first, I added a Tamiya aluminium spur gear mount at this point, and a 21T brushless motor. You can build the gearbox in a 'standard' or 'low' ratio - I won't be doing any crawling type running or anything so I opted for the standard ratio

Chassis plates and battery tray get screwed together next before getting bolted to the chassis rails. The plastic used is the new style plastic used on some of the more modern Tamiya kits, it's a lot stronger and stiffer than the shiny ABS you see in the older kits.

Shock mounts and front / rear chassis braces get bolted on next:

Than the central parts of the prop and the mounts for the suspension links are added:

Will post the rest of the build up when I get a chance to upload the pics

And the rest! Next is the diffs and axles:

Front axle, added some blue ballstuds left over from another build:

Rear axle:

And then mounted, plenty of travel:

Shocks come next, I fitted some slightly stiffer springs and proper pistons internally:
VIkmDVW.jpg

I've got to finish the electrics next, and the bodyshell, but will hopefully finish soon :D
7gVa8ZJ.jpg

A few of the hopups have arrived now, so I can get those fitted soon too. Got a steel steering link, some low friction ball cups for all the suspension links, and a set of carbon steel props as well (metal props are probably essential for CC02 if you want to run fast brushless motors).

Looking forward to getting it finished ASAP - should be nice and quick on tarmac or grass once I've got the gearing set right :)
