RC cars

There's a couple of local places to me, SC Models & Herts RC Models.

Ah, yes, I looked at Arrma, but my other criteria is i'd like to build it first, and the Arrma's all seem to be RTR's :(

You will be taking it apart to work on it changing diff fluids and bearings, you'll get to know it inside out.

I've recently got the itch to get back into this. Problem is I can't decide what.

I had a Hornet and then a Hotshot in the late 80's/early 90's.

I don't have those now, but there's a couple of local race tracks that cater for 1/8, 1/10, off & on-road (even a new Crawler category) and too many purchase options available.

I don't want Nitro, I'm happy with Electric, but can't decide on scale or make. Only reason, as a kid, I went Tamiya is because they were cheap compared to the Schumachers and Kyosho's of the time (and even then, there was envy over anyone who had Tamiya's Avante).

I'm a bit of an off road fan, so I'd look at the new Tamiya TD4 Super Avante and the TD2 Astute. They're the best Tamiya buggies right now that have decent availability. They would be ok on track, are made from modern plastics (no self tapping screws) and there's a lot of hopups about if you wanted to customise it (I would just add the slipper clutch if you want a hot motor).

If you want to do serious club racing then it would be hard to find a safer choice than the lastest Team Associated RC10B6 or Schumacher Cougar LD2 though TBH.

In the on-road space I like the Tamiya M-Chassis cars as they're cheap, tough, and the racing is always a blast. The FWD versions are easier to drive quickly on track, and the one to get right now would be the M07 Concept - you would need no hopups out of the box to have a competitive car - not all clubs run classes for these though. Detailed M07 build thread here: https://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?/topic/83611-blistas-m-07-concept-chassis-kit-build/

For full size touring cars you'd be hard pressed to find a bad one when looking at the top end competition cars from Xray, Yokomo, Schumacher or Tamiya. I have a TA08 which is more mid range, but a nice kit to build and plenty competitive enough for me (Good Tamiya TA08 review: https://www.thercracer.com/2021/07/58693-tamiya-ta08-pro-build-review-and.html?m=0 )

Best thing to do is visit the local clubs, watch some racing to see what you like the look of and ask them what they'd recommend to get started with - I wouldn't go all out with all the best gear initially, as experience and practice makes way more difference with track driving than anything else.

I didn't see your reply, but i spent a good couple of hours yesterday afternoon at the local RC shop looking for advice, I'd picked up the Mugen 1/8th to start with but sense took over and I ended up with this nice little haul for some 1/10th fun instead.

Good choice!

Looks like you've got some great kit there - that'll be a blast to race!

First snag however, the Savox servo, with the servo horn, catches on the bell housing, so i've ordered a slim alloy servo horn.

You could try a shim/washer (a slim one) between the servo lugs and the mount to move the servo out a small amount possibly.

Are there any good facebook groups or forums to check out for decent classifieds or best off just checking ebay?
I find eBay typically more pricey but there's way more choice and with decent buyer protection.

What type of car are you looking for? They'll be a Facebook group or forum to recommend but kind of depends on the brand or type of car your after
