RC Planes

Further update to my ongoing bizarre RC addiction of getting excited but not actually having anything to play with. :p

I had just ordered a new motor, and a couple of 6x4 props, but now I've gone and ordered a transmitter and an array of new props so I can do a bit of testing on getting the most thrust without chewing through any motors.

I ordered one of these FlySky FSTh9X/B 2.4G 9 Channel Transmitter with module. It's a 9 channel wotsit dooda, but you can flash the firmware and get it up to 16(?) channels or something ridiculous. For £50 it seems like a bit of a bargain. There's also ways to get live telemetry - speed, altitude, battery voltage etc. - through a hack, which is positively awesome, so I'll definitely be having some of that.

Also ordered 6 x 9g servos as the ones that come with the plane are supposedly a bit parp.

So.. just need the plane to arrive now. :D

wheres your plane from hobbyking? my order finally shipped the other day :@
had to wait 5 days from the heli bits to be moved from the backup warehouse to the main one :(
but it shipped on the 19th and its bloody chinese newyear so everyhing in hk/china etc shuts down for like a week or something silly....

HK dont have the staff to deal with the demand they get though , in december they had 15,000 orders

Yeah, it's from HobbyKing. The plane I ordered a week last Friday, some other bits (batteries) I think on Monday. That had supposedly shipped, but it's still not showing that on the website and I haven't received any tracking numbers so I reckon that hasn't moved anywhere.

The plane will probably take forever - it's in their other warehouse.

When I get the transmitter I know I'll be itching to receive the plane...

What transmitter you running with arknor?

probably that one you ordered lol, got scammed on ebay for a turnig 9x , waiting for the refund.

this is how long it took them to move my heli from the secondary warehouse
i ordered on the 11th with order number #20038006XX (i think my order was processed 2 days later and sent to the warehouse queue for picking)
BSKT2376 JIT SCAN OUT @Jan 16 2012 5:25PM
JIT Picked in BackWarehouse @Jan 17 2012 2:47PM
JIT In Transit to FrontWarehouse @Jan 17 2012 2:57PM
BSKT2376 JIT ARRIVED IN WAHLOK @Jan 18 2012 9:31AM
BOX2376 JIT OFF TRUCK @Jan 19 2012 9:05AM (took 24hours for it to be unloaded from the truck lol)

i got the "your order has shipped" email with a tracking number a few hours after that
an insane amount of orders goes through their system and they dont seem to have expanded over the years to cope with demand, but i knew the heli itself was a JIT item and would take 3-5 days to arrive at the main warehouse..

my actual tracking (sent with singapore speedpost, aparently all orders with a battery go through singapore post now)

Shipments in transit from Origin

Acknowledged at Transit Centre

but on their site
We apologise that due to Chinese New Year festive period, there will be delay in same day local deliveries.
For postings between 19 and 21 Jan 2012, items will be delivered after Chinese New Year, i.e. from 25 Jan 2012 onwards.

so my stuff is probably stuck in limbo while everyone celebrates the chinese new year lol

Oh balls, is it really that slow?! :D

I might consider cancelling and getting something else if it really takes forever. :p I've read stories that sometimes return only store credit, which sounds like a bit of a scam.

Turnigy 9x and the one I've ordered are the same aren't they? You'll have to help me hack it if you know how to do it. :p

EDIT: This is getting ridiculous... just ordered the backlight and programmable add-on board thing so I can update the firmware on it..... keep reading that it's a bit parp on stock firmware though......

:o

Almost the same as in fundamentally the same? Once firmwares have been applied and all that jazz?

Does this mean that mine has actually been shipped?

no it means the plane has been moved to the main warehouse and its probably ready to be shipped.
if its shipped your orders page looks like this

sounds like your order never got unloaded from the truck and i believe hobbyking is shutdown for the chinese new year until the 28th lol :D (like most of asia)

Asia warehouse holiday period notice. 21/01/2012
It's that time of year again; when 20% of the world's population takes a holiday to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
During this holiday period HobbyKing will have varying levels of service due to customs, courier/shipping closures and public holidays. Here's what you need to know.
-All Satellite warehouses (US/DE/AU) will remain open and function normally. If you make an order to one of these warehouses it will be processed normally.
-HobbyKing Customer Service will remain open the entire time during the holiday period (21-28 Jan); however support will be slow due to an increase in support requests.
-Orders placed between 21~31 of January will be shipped in the first week of February.
your order will probably ship first thing on the 29th and take 6 days to reach you from beeing shipped

Great, cheers dude. :) So a couple of weeks wait, that's not too bad. Will have to try and curtail my spending in the meantime though...

Any idea about Frsky addons for this transmitter? :p

Cheers, I ordered the piece of kit that allows it to be flashed from one of the links in those threads.

Is the FrSky stuff separate to all this? Is it specifically the 2.4ghz transmitter/receiver module? Is it like an upgrade?

i cant believe a whole country shuts down for a week in this day and age :@

my package is still sat in a warehouse for singapore mail ... i guess it finally gets stuck on a plane late tonight

Mine hasn't gone anywhere either. Hopefully it'll ship next week, otherwise I'll keep spending money to stave off the excitement of receiving my goodies. :o

My FlySky 9x should arrive today. My USB patching module is in the post also, should come next week.

Looks like HobbyKing have kicked back into life, my 'Large Boxed Item' has now been put on the truck to go back to their front end. Wahoo! I think?

Still waiting for my FlySky... ordered a USB trainer interface so I can get some practise in before it arrives.

It's like being 8 years old all over again. :p

Orders are packed and posted from 9am-5pm, Monday to Saturday. The time in Hong Kong right now is: 4:31:29 PM

**** yes, I am so buying a beginner one when I move house in a couple of weeks. Surrounded by open fields!

Realistically how much are you looking at for a starter one with everything you need? £250-300?

Yay. A new recruit. \o/

:D

Not sure what mine has cost so far. Probably more than I want to think, but £300 sounds excessive.

I've spent $240 / £150 before tax/import costs that I am assumed I'll get caned on which got me:

- 1.6m Plane with motors and servos already installed
- 4 Batteries
- Charger & PSU
- Receivers that I dont even need any more - about $18
- Battery cables

Plus £90 ish on:

- a transmitter that you can flash and upgrade
- a USB interface to do the above
- a simulator interface (simulator is free)
- upgraded motor
- 6 new servos to replace them on the plane and possibly put flaps on
- a bunch of varying size propellers so I can fiddle and faff when I'm bored and see what gets me the most thrust! :p

£240 before taxes on the stuff from China, basically. Oops. :o

Thanks for going so indepth :D I had a small polystyrene RC plane once, only cheap, and loved it. Like I said, where I am moving to is just surrounded by open fields, so would be a great laugh. £240ish sounds reasonable, obviously I don't want to spend a bomb but also don't want cheap stuff that wont last.

Would you guys recommend a "Skyclimber"? I had that one bookmarked a while ago, it seems to be a pretty good platform to get started with an "all included" package...
I never flew RC but I have years of flight simulator, including flying as a "third party" ie outside the cockpit, so I feel I'm not entirely "beginner".

What I'd like is a plane I can fly with a reasonably good camera for doing aerial landscape etc...
