Most people either already agree with you and have bought a 3000 series card 2nd hand, or will do so once £/$ slaps them in the face with RX7000 release price and final performance is known.

Also with the 3000 series you get mature drivers, whereas the RX7000 driver situation is currently unknown. We all know AMD's track record of drivers........

Dear oh dear desperate times in Nvidialand again...

Thing is we haven't seen any RT games where they are using nvidias new methods/optimisations for 40xx so chances are when that is implemented, the difference could be substantial, think CP 2077 overdrive mode and portal rtx will be the first titles to show this and plague tale when it gets its RT update.
The 4080 12gb was slower than ampere cards in both RT and raster so a 4070 on a further cutdown die will be even slower. the only thing we know will be substantial so far is the raster where a 4080 12gb performed similarly to a 3080 12gb which was over 10% behind a 6950XT so could be 60% behind a 7900XT.

Yup I agree, I'm just referring to if any future RT titles use the optimisations specific to 40xx, the gap between ampere/rDNA 3 compared to 40xx series in RT will be larger than the current RT titles/benchmarks we have seen.

Haven't seen people talk about FSR 3/frame generation much or maybe I have missed it. But thoughts on it? Is it going to be compatible with older amd gpus as well as nvidia gpus?

Games development takes a long time, often many years. By the time many new games have such RT available, 4090 will be the old generation, so will RDNA 3. Till then you might see only a handful at most, where NVIDIA already approached their devs a while ago, knowing well what they plan to release in the future. My approach have always been to buy GPU for my current needs and if that changes in the future, I'll change the GPU then too. Currently 3080Ti has been enough for all RT games I wanted to play in 1440p UW, but raster is already falling behind, hence 4090 would likely been an overkill (especially for the price), whereas RDNA 3 might be just right. But, I'll wait for benchmarks to be sure.

Yes I agree 100%. It would be awful if you bought an RX7800 and then 2 years later it performed like an RX7800XT because they fixed the drivers (fine wine). I'd want the slower performance back that I paid for.

Considering the low power usage of the RDNA3 cards, do people think the AIBs will release some nicely overclocked versions bringing it to 4090 performance levels, maybe even surpass it slightly (at stock)?

That was some BS marketing right there. Knowing AMD it will be released in december 2023 and it will be below par.I don't believe they even started it yet and i have doubts they thought about it before Nvidia brought DLSS3. :)
You might or might not believe them, but DLSS 3 took NVIDIA many many years to develop (it predates even DLSS 1 by quite a bit apparently) and required them to put proper hardware into the GPU to make it work. AMD's approach seems to be very different if it's to work on older hardware as well. Time will tell, I will not make judgement up front about something I know nothing about.

Mature drivers? Hmm...
"The issue was reported by Call of Duty's lead PC studio Beenox on October 28, the day Modern Warfare 2 went into full release. "We've noticed some stability issues with the latest NVIDIA drivers 526.47 on Call of Duty #MWII," the studio tweeted. "For now we'd suggest you keep the 516.59, or 522.25 drivers."" - as just one example of maturity of their drivers. And later NVIDIA quietly released hotfix driver, which did not even show in GeForce experience, and I had to dig around a bit to find it. I wonder what this one break! :p

Also, comparing to 6800XT and their drivers, as simple task as watching YouTube worked for me WAY better on AMD than on NVIDIA. I tend to look through the list of my subs, then open few tabs with vids I want to watch - 0 issues on AMD with that, I play one, the rest wait there. On NVIDIA if I open more than 2 vids at once, I have stutter in web browser, black screen showing for a moment opening any new tab or at times scrolling down websites etc. This is for me one of the most basic functionalities I require and highly annoying how it behave on NVIDIA.

No but if you apply 1.5-1.7x to the 6950 performance you get within spitting distance of the 4090.

We will need to wait for reviews but if true it will be very close.
That is max fps not average fps. The charts everyone is using is comparing average fps andbthe extrapolation is being done based on max fps. AMD said it's meant to target 4080. If it's within the ballpark of a 4090 why not say it's targeting 4090? The 6900XT was targeting 3090 and it was within that ballpark as well

Who cares.....

If I'm wrong find me where it says fsr was used in the charts with no mention of FSR
Check LTT channel, Linus mentioned that he was able to go to the test benches at the event and set settings to benchmark

And compared to reviews he already did with the 6950xt

To verify AMDs chart upto which had no mention of FSR used and Linus didn't mention it as well would be big mistake of Linus failing to mention that

And he said the upto matched up
AMD's marketing slides state FSR was used

If AMD wanted to share numbers without FSR, they would have done it publicly and not through Linus. They don't want to share that data.

Linus is all about click bait and isn't known for scientific testing.

Also explain why would AMD say it's a 4080 competitor as that chart shows it competes with 4090.

They also said on presentation that RDNA3 came out better than they planned it to be, which was a pleasant surprise for them. Sure, we can call that marketing BS and whatnot, but it might also mean they did indeed aim at 4080 performance bracket and by accident almost it came out better in raster than that. RT is another matter, but once again, independent benchmarks will reveal. Best we can do now is sit and wait, then buy whatever fits us best.
