The 3090 beat the 6900 XT.

I quoted all the "RIP 3090" in the thread. Then when the 6900 XT reviews came out....they were all quiet :D

Did it? Last i looked they were basically on par or at least traded blows depending on the game, and that was a year ago or more, i'm sure any gap between them has narrowed due to driver updates.

I don't know about you but I'm not buying a expensive GPU on release hoping it will improve with gaming performance against the competition 12 to 18 months later due to driver updates.

Having said that... nvidia did release a driver recently which improved their performance in dx 12 :p IIRC, has closed the gap considerably where amd gpus did have the large advantage i.e. assassins creed valhalla and forza 5

Similar with the 6700XT and 3070. People say the 6700XT is competitive with the 3060ti. But it isn't.

I've highlighted in green where the 6700XT is faster, and orange where it is pretty much a draw. Yet when you say the 6700XT trades blows with the 3070 people say it doesn't. Strange. As at 1440P it clearly does. It's a great 1440P card. Over 13 games it was just 2.9FPS slower. The horror!!

Here is a review from over a year ago of 13 games (so this is worse as it doesn't include the recent driver improvements).

The newest driver causes artifacts in Modern Warfare II (MW2) so rolled back to 522.25 which works fine in MW2.

Ohh .. I don't have that game so not sure. I was playing SOTTR benchmark to see what sort of uplifts these new drivers have on SLI/NVLINK, seems some people are saying also MSFS on 522.25 were seeing crashing to desktop or strange artifacts and had to roll back too. I don't really play games on that machine normally just MSFS and work really. HTPC is really the main games machine for pc gaming and not had a chance to update the drivers there to test out more games for issues, it's a 3090 in that pc too. Will have a play this weekend and see what they help or break for the games I have installed. This series of drivers for sure have a lot of changes in them compared to the 4xx.xx versions before I had installed on the work pc.

Also, forgot to mention, all the ray tracing titles where the gap increases further..... and that's not even factoring in the more demanding ones where when RT is more complex, RDNA 2 buckles entirely.

For raster, it was win some, lose some, draw:

Then throw in the long wait time for a dlss competitor over the months/years, fsr 1 was not a competitor to dlss as per amds own words, fsr 2+ is and even now the uptake is still somewhat lacking....

3090 problem was its price though, for only an extra £750, you get a whopping 10-15% boost over a £650 3080  If you didn't care for RT or dlss, 6900xt was the better buy imo

Gains in performance with driver updates happens with all gpu's, AMD just seem to be able to eek a bit more out of it as time goes on.
