Recent Events in Japan - Earthquake + Air-Crash

JAL was cleared to land and had confirmed back on the radio for the correct runway (34R). ATC audio has been reviewed and published already!
It appears that the JAL was the first aircraft to land on 34R for some time, other traffic had been using the parallel 34L. Although others were also slated to land at 34R after the JAL.
The other aircraft was a Dash-8 and at the moment there is some speculation about it's position/orientation and if it had been told to be where it was. Although it is purely speculation. Not seen/heard any tower to Dash-8 radio comms yet.

Source for the audio and review?

Lots of good data here:
Almost always the best source of early information in these circumstances, but as always, worth noting that the information there may be speculation/incorrect!

Thanks! Familiar with pprune but as you know lots of “sources” pop up and I wanted to see if there was another.

Like you say, the info there has to be taken with a pinch of salt. The vagaries and nuance in procedures of a dual high intensity runway operation are frequently misinterpreted. Runway incursions are always a hot topic and one of the most actively managed risks at such airports. I’m pretty sure Haneda has a version of runway incursion monitoring.

Edit: just realised the irony and hypocrisy in the latter part of my message :D

Whilst I'm sure it will all come out in an investigation on what happened to cause this accident and its a huge shame we've lost the lives of 5 coast guard rescue workers, this has been a huge advert for the safety of the A350.

Though I can imagine this is also down to the punctuality and carefullness of the Japanese citizen.

You see the videos of the passengers coming down the slides and not a single one is pushing around or clinging onto luggage. They all did as they were told and everyone safely evacuated.

I imagine if this happened here in the UK or in the States it would be a different story.

I was going to launch into a spirited defence of UK/US people here, but then remembered that as a somewhat regular flyer, it seems that most, if not all passengers seem to do whatever they damn well please once they cross an aircraft threshold :D

The number of people who simply will not follow simple rules in standard operation leads me to believe that an emergency is unlikely to be any better :(

*However, I feel this thread is straying off the original topic (ironically, helped by my own additions). Perhaps we need a new thread, or a change of title?

** Problem solved!!

Remember the one in Russia? Some bloke getting his bag down ended up blocking in everyone behind him who burned to death

Very true - sadly can't see it being the same result if it had happened here....
Flew from Haneda to London yesterday with ANA and people actually follow instructions in terms of boarding. They wait for their respective group to be called up.

When I have flown other airlines (Delta, Virgin, United) when the gate opens its a free for all. Around 80% of people attempt to board.

This behaviour most likely played a major factor in everyone getting out safely, agree i can't see this happening here.
