Red arrow incident

but that he could have pointed it out into the desert and ejected at low altitude. Far less risk to him and very little risk to any people.

He had no power - so the more recent story goes, he also had bombs strapped to him which would have gone off if he just let the plane go into the ground.
your not stupid your just saying he was stupid when you know 1% of the facts.. a little uncalled for.

He didnt eject as there was a chance the landing would have been a success. Even sliding down the runway is generally a better option if possible than ejecting. He finally ejects as the aircraft catches fire and as a last resort.
From what I was told the crash was caused by a mechanical failure in the engine but this is not confirmed.

No power, fair enough.

Bombs on board? Desert seems a good place for them then.

Wah wah wah I called him stupid. Grow up.

wah wah wah? and you tell me to grow up what the hell is your problem?

now i will call you stupid.......bombs in the ground , pilot ejects probably gets killed by the explosion, clever chap arent you.

You love to aggravate people dont you? well you have your wish - im ****ed off by your ineptitude.

Well I'm just supposing as I've never flown a jet. Perhaps someone could enlighten me rather than dispense free nerd rage for once?

'Bang out at altitude?' Is that tech lingo? I'm not saying he should have shut his eyes and randomly steered the plane into the nearest civilian centre, but that he could have pointed it out into the desert and ejected at low altitude. Far less risk to him and very little risk to any people.

Compulsive, but I think I'll decline.

Ejecting on an airfield manned by fire services and paramedics is probably a bit more appealing to the pilot than ditching himself in the sand somewhere.

Pilots are trained and are intelligent people who dont display disregard for others. They also value their own lives as much as anyone.

You are literally trolling this thread with crap. Get a little process going.. Let your brain engage, ponder over your thoughts.. THEN, when you are happy its not going to portray you as a helmet, post your thoughts.

From a neutral perspective Robbie, you're coming across as quite a tool. You clearly have little clue what you're talking about and are filling a thread about a man's death with your random judgements and accusations. Rather than telling other people to go away perhaps you should take your own advice, considering you have shown no respect whatsoever.

RIP to the pilot, tragic accident.

Wow, Robbie, keeping it real I see. If it wasn't for everyone quoting you, I wouldn't have known where to begin! :)

Rip to this RA pilot. Creaming yourself into the inside of a cockpit canopy can't be nice. Even if he'd shot through normally and the chute opened, it wouldn't have had enough time to deploy properly. He would have landed with serious injuries I suspect. :(

Yeah its horrendous.

Even if an ejection goes smoothly the forces subjected to the pilot compress his/her spine and can actually knock inches of his/her height. The force of leg restraints whipping your legs inwards can easily snap bones too.

If you eject 3 times you can no longer fly, on medical grounds, however if you eject from 3 jets I think you are unlucky and probably cost a lot of money!

I was of the understanding that the chute would have had enough time to deploy properly as per the design of the seat.

Completely agree with everything you say there - unfortunately Robbie seems to have an abrasive posting style.

RIP Sean Cunningham :(

This, which is exactly why the KAF pilot was sent straight home after the incident above. It must be gutting, IIRC correctly it wasn't long into his tour and like you say, 3 strikes and you're out, I wouldn't want even one on my record if I were a pilot! (But remember folks, he was basking in all this glory! ).

Why don't pilots just crash land in the rugged terrain away from emergency vehicles and paramedics to the North or the East? Perhaps also because KAF is so heavily mined from the Soviet occupation, particularly around those areas? Plus the bomb dumps along the north perimeter as seen on the dated aerial photo?

Sorry to rant, but when people make accusations like they know the facts "BLATANTLY ITS FOR THE $$$$$!!!11 - CONSPIRACY!!!!111" they are indirectly requesting an education. Shouldn't have edited out your posts robbie, you might have helped other posters :)

Not true, the current Wing Commander RAFAT ( Red 11, The real boss of the sqn people don't see :p) has ejected 3 time and is still flying, he has written off a Buccaneer, a Harrier and the Hawk which crashed at Cranwell in 2008.

Its all just down to if you are medically fit I believe after each ejection.

3 Ejections is only for Tornados as the rocket pack is much more powerful to get you out of the way of the huge tail. The tails on Hawks and Harriers etc are much smaller so the rocket pack is smaller giving you less spinal trauma.

Mad Jay - Turns out I know Nicky the CPL line walker who was there as he's an ex-15sqn lad and I was borrowed by them for a while this year.
