Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4, Xbox and PC Hopefully)

Just a tip : if after you finish one of the big gun fights, you see a gun icon on the minimap, always check it out. I picked up a rare version of the first sniper rifle you acquire, can’t remember its name. I think the stats are higher, plus it has engravings all over it. Looks awesome

Are all the yellow dots on the map main story quests.

If so where are the side quests?

Yes, and the side quests are white. Go on the map, bring the index up and press one of the right triggers to show all missions currently available.

Some will only appear if you're near a particular person/area, whilst others unlock as you progress with the story.

Saw some O'Driscolls trying to free their mate from a bounty hunter. Killed them all then went up the prison carriage (or whatever it's called), set some dynamite next to it and blew up the remaining O'Driscoll :D

I've just got to Saint Denis (I always only go to New places when a quest sends me there in games}. It is pretty awesome, especially at night. Looks amazing.

The general feel and look of the town really reminds me of Assassin's Creed Syndicate.

I passed through SD there to help a dude/stranger, a doctor literally amputated his arm off!

If a game grabs me, I like to explore and try things out for myself. This game does not reward that well at all with obtuse progress related locks on items and abilities.

Wanted to brush my horse, couldnt find a brush anywhere. It gets unlocked with a mission.
Wanted to give pearson leatherworking tools for upgrades. Where's the ledger? Couldn't find it anywhere. Unlocked after putting money in the camp tin.
Went hunting Elk, needed to use a sniper for a clean kill. Find the gunsmith. Snipers locked. Unlocked later.

And none of it makes any sense in a game that's trying to be realistic in so many ways.

Best advice to new players - finish chapter 2 sticking purely to the missions. Then go exploring... a little. Stay away from saint denis until you're sent there. Before then it has loads of npcs meandering the streets, but the place feels lifeless.

I went before chapter 4 for the same reason. It spoiled the intro of the city via the main story.

Hunting panthers officially sucks, not only are they lethal but they're also rare as rocking horse ****.

The honour system is annoying as well, it's nigh on impossible to stay on the good side of things. I've helped everyone I've come across but always seem to be penalised for killing people that attack me first. I'm just going to take the easy route and be a scumbag I think :p

Small tip: Short whistle calls your horse to you, long whistle tells it to follow you.

I thought the longer the whistle, the further away the horse would hear me..

Agreed. Progression is quite archaic compared to other recent games. The missions are also too scripted; abilities locked until the appropriate time, forced to follow a set path, punished with "mission failed" (or whatever it is that comes up) even if your approach is workable, simply because it doesn't fit the script.

These are tropes that died some years ago now. It's a bit odd to see them in a major 2018 release.

I had to rob a carriage this evening. Killed the driver, and the horses dragged the carriage straight off a cliff. Mission failed. Thing is, I didn't actually need the carriage. The objective was to retrieve an item from the carriage, which still would have been possible in spite of it tumbling off a cliff. But the objective wasn't important; I failed the mission because the carriage was key to the next scripted set-piece.

I know I'm complaining a lot about RDR2. I do like bits of it, honest :p

Finished it tonight. Took me roughly 60 hours and I have to say one of the best games I've played in a long time. Seriously, it's been way too long since I sat done and finished a game to the end. Am sure rockstar will be dropping dlc for this for years to come.

Well worth the 60 quid I paid and well done rockstar for making another masterpiece

Bounty hunters were totally ruining my game. Having to deal with 4 people trying to kill me every 5 minutes is a total PITA when you're trying to track stuff or find plants. So I ended up donating all my money to the camp, going to the Sheriffs office in Valentine and pushing the deputy, I then surrendered and he slung me in jail. Bounty gone. Did the same in Strawberry to get rid of my $300 bounty, but I was too close to the deputy to surrender so I ended up choking the bloke to death against a wall instead. Another classic example of stupid controls. Reloaded and did it properly, bounty gone and I can enjoy the game again.

I've definitely got some gripes with this game but it so varied and beautiful that I can't put it down.

Even in Skyrim, The Witcher, GTA V etc you need to do a few missions and maybe 3-5 hours+ of content to get to a stage before you are truly free to roam and have unlocked enough area and content.

Skyrim is probably the only one of those where you want to grind your characters level and skills out a bit (or use the cheat mods in the se edition) so all the content / weapons / armour you unlock is at max/end game level.

Equally with those + RDR 2, unless you have read the full companion guide before play and online tips you never get full benefit or can maximize play through from the start. I have the hard back guide and this does help steer play through for maximum potential.

The best approach I reckon is to play through fairly quickly, do the minimum to complete as much/all of the story and still enjoy it; then start again; and as soon as, possible using the guides, go off and do everything else in game leaving the story to an as and when.

Even then, until all the DLC is released with these open world games, i.e. you buy the gold/special editions, you never hit your full play through time potential.

It's only really MMORPGs that are wholly linear in story and level progression requiring you to level and progress in situ but at the same time still giving you free to roam and play in the context of each level stage, equipment obtainable and content/fights that can be completed.

I just don't understand the wanted system...

I did a quest which was basically a big gun fight by a small hut, ending in the hut looting cash from a chiney. While in the hut I looted a few bits and bobs and found a new gun. I could only swap it with an equipped gun, so did that and was worried I would lose my old one, so called over my horse, ran outside and stashed the new gun, and ran back in to get my old back - it was gone. So, I continued to loot and as soon as I grabbed a tin of food I was suddenly wanted...

There were no witnesses, it was in the middle of nowhere, but suddenly wanted... Not wanted during the big gunfight or looting everyone, not wanted when I entered the hut and took the gun, cash or most of the contents, but instantly wanted once I re-entered the hut and touched a remaining tin of beans, almost like it had reset its status by leaving it. And the only witnesses were (looted) dead bodies...

It almost seems bugged atm?!?

At least I found that picking up a new gun just sends the old one back to my horse and its not lost. But, I'm just sooo confused about the occasional wanted or bounty for actions when there's no witnesses.

I also can't understand how to keep a positive honour status while wanting to explore and search for collectables. If I approaching a farm/house I seem to get shot at (and then lose honour when I shoot them back), or get a wanted status for picking up an item/collectable with a witness. I've found those cigarette cards inside houses I was shot at for approaching, so there a "need" to go in there for completion, but how do you do it, while maintaining a positive honour?!?

You'll know which area the legendary ones are in, as they have the animal icon with a crown on their head.

Thanks yeah I noticed that :)
Found and killed the legendary grizzly (using the rifle with the scope on and the hard hitting bullets) but he still got to me and ended up stabbing the **** out of him on the floor , holy **** that was intense (even the Wife was watching). I'm now wearing him as a hat lol.
sidenote: pump action shotgun is incredible for fending off wolves while horseback btw.

Another cool scene played out near Valentine, as I approached the town there was a train blocking the crossing so I stopped, a NPC drew alongside and stopped, then another ran past the pair of us and hit the train, his horse span round all dazed then fell to the floor dead, rider got up and wandered off so I looted the saddle bag and his dropped ammo.

Nice

That is the Rare Rolling Block Rifle. You can only get this once as it is dropped by that NPC in the barn and disappears after.
