Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4, Xbox and PC Hopefully)

think i'll need to come back to this at a later date, it seems to be fighting my enjoyment at every single turn. its just baffling how archaic some of this game and its systems feel.

I'm not sure about the game to be honest. For an open world game it somehow seems a bit linear and too scripted for my liking. It doesn't have the rpg element of something like fallout or Skyrim which I'd been hoping for. Also, somehow the world doesn't seem very interactive in the way that something like Zelda breath of the wild is with all its physics puzzles and interactive objects.

Plus the combat seems incredibly poor and little better than GTA5. If anything in not enjoying it as much as I did GTA as I miss the driving aspect of that game. Traveling by horse is nowhere near as fun.

If it weren't for the promise of multiplayer and them building on the game when that releases I'd have sold it. I'm only about 3-4 hours in and i'm bored to be honest.

Glad it's not just me feeling this way!

This is the one that's just happened, completely maddening. I go and do what I think is an open world activity, collecting a debt. I get there, we get into this QTE where I give him a smack, threaten him a bit....then suddenly....we cut to a cinematic? I'm riding through the woods? Where from? Where to? Why am I on a completely different horse from the one I rode in on? Why have I just been dumped back in control in some random place, I have no idea where it is, or why I'm there?

From the place you were at, threatening the guy..

It's not a random place, it's your camp... (really, you couldn't work this out? You can see it right there in front of you)

No idea about the horse.

I'm into chapter 3 and I think this is the only time you get ridden back to camp, I don't really know why, but it's hardly an issue. It happened once and it saved you time riding home.

Alright, I've uploaded what happens next. I've been magically cinematic'ed back to close to camp by that last cutscene. I tried to sleep but the option was disabled. I could drink coffee though. I tried to speak to Lenny but he told me he was sleeping. So looking at the map, looks like I've got a $20 bounty on me...not sure where from, kinda lost track. But screw it, I'm gonna spend a fun slice of my gaming time going to the post office to pay off the bounty.

Here's what happens :

Just so anyone thinking of buying this game understands what they're buying, because it isn't a open world game in the sense that anyone playing an open world game in 2018 imagines it to be.

It's on rails when you are in a mission. It's open world when you're not. You can choose to start a mission on the other side of the map, or start one next to you, or go do anything else the game lets you do. That's what open worlds are.

I don't know if you've played any other video games in recent years, but you should, because most developers figured how to make missions work in open worlds without putting the game on rails a long time ago.

I know RDR2 has been in development for years and didn't have the luxury of seeing the recent AC games' approach to open world quests, but it's *really* jarring to have this open that is crying out to be enjoyed, but you get yanked out of it and put on rails every time you want to do anything.

While on the subject, exactly what things can you do that aren't on rails? Hunting is the only thing so far I've found. I did a bounty and that was a telegraphed series of cutscenes with minimal player interaction. Story missions are the same. Debt collection is the same.

I've been out to watch the rugby and had a few beers :p

Think I've got the xbox sharing stuff to work.

The horse that you see in the cinematic (NOT the horse I had when I started the cinematic), is the one I was looking for earlier....it wasn't back at camp...so why has it appeared now?

Yes I've done that mission, it's a debt collection mission, not really seeing the issue with that video? the missions are on rails as it has a fixed narrative, as has always been the case with Rockstar games like this.

It looks like you were still part way through a mission, as the text at the bottom of the screen said you need to return to a place, but you went the opposite direction.

Believe it or not, some people like myself enjoy this type of game where there is a fixed story to follow, and in between accepting missions, there's an open world to do things like hunting, collecting provisions, robbing houses, stagecoaches, treasure hunts, meeting and speaking with random NPC's to see where it might lead to (the white dots on the map that randomly appear)

I've played AC:Origins and just couldn't get into it. Ended up forcing myself to play it. This however is just my cup of tea.

Am I understanding you correctly - you're complaining that the missions show you cutscenes? It's quite hard to tell a story like this without them.

As for other open world activities - robbing people, holding up stagecoaches, taking over trains, hunting gangs, upgrading your weapons, buying new clothes.

That seems incredibly poor

Ok, so I need to expect that anything that I pick to do on the map is going to be a mission, and until that mission finishes, I need to follow instructions. I really want to get into this game but I feel like it's fighting back.

I'm going to try and readjust my expectations and just let it play out.

Mid_gen....You work in some capacity for Ubisoft right?

Yes, something I'm quite open about, to avoid any accusations. I've bought RDR2 twice now, I basically bought an Xbox One X to play it because it wouldn't work on my PS4... I want to get my money's worth, but it's frustrating the hell out of me.

Yes, if you start a story mission, you generally have to finish it before doing anything else. Side missions generally let you carry on messing about inbetween.

I would have thought a story mission was pretty self evident

Loving this game - This game is all about exploration, you make this game yourself.

Erm, I hate to break it to you, but there are over a hundred main story missions!

It is really bizarre Story-wise chapters 1 through 4 were excellent imo, then chapter 5 was God-awful, honestly like a completely different game, and now chapter 6 I think has been excellent again. At this point I'm certain the game would be a lot better without chapter 5 at all.

Think I've had a bit of a breakthrough in my relationship with the game. I've played for over an hour, collected two debts, done a couple of random interactions, rescued a woman and taken her back to town, bought some new bits for my horse, enjoyed riding around taking in the scenery, camped, cooked some food, napped a few hours, and generally been able to get on with playing the game a bit.

And I've done it all without trampling anyone's dog or otherwise getting a bounty on my head! It's a revelation:)

It had its issues, but it is greater than the sum of its parts. I hope you enjoy it from now on. A lot of the missions are on rails, but a tip I would give people is to stick it in First Person made and just treat it like your typical fps on those missions.

I have definite issues with the game, but I've never not been enjoying it overall

Also, what is up with the harvesting animals. All through the game, I have had the same message pop up saying you can't harvest all of this animal because your satchel is full or something, but I have hardly anything in my satchel.
