It happened to me, but at a different point in the game.
In recent years, an open world game has meant open gameplay; the opportunity to tackle objectives how you see fit. RDR2 is like winding the clock back 5+ years, combining an open world with linear story missions. You have to do exactly what the game wants you to do, or it's "Mission Failed". It allows for very cinematic gameplay, but it also limits player freedom.
Either that's something you find irritating, or it isn't. But it is definitely a thing.
To give an example, I had to chase someone who stole something from me. I could have caught them easily if I could use my horse. But no. Not allowed. Again, I could have done it by taking a shortcut. Nope. Mission Failed. How about grabbing them with the lasso? Nope, again it isn't allowed. You have to chase them for several minutes in order to get to the location for the next scene.
If someone steals something from you outside of a mission, all of the above options are on the table. You can do as you please. Which makes the mission seeem all the more jarring.
Pretty much every mission is like that to some extent or another. If you're someone who would just chase the target and not even think about the other options, it's fine. For the rest of us, it's irritating.
