Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4, Xbox and PC Hopefully)

It happened to me, but at a different point in the game.

In recent years, an open world game has meant open gameplay; the opportunity to tackle objectives how you see fit. RDR2 is like winding the clock back 5+ years, combining an open world with linear story missions. You have to do exactly what the game wants you to do, or it's "Mission Failed". It allows for very cinematic gameplay, but it also limits player freedom.

Either that's something you find irritating, or it isn't. But it is definitely a thing.

To give an example, I had to chase someone who stole something from me. I could have caught them easily if I could use my horse. But no. Not allowed. Again, I could have done it by taking a shortcut. Nope. Mission Failed. How about grabbing them with the lasso? Nope, again it isn't allowed. You have to chase them for several minutes in order to get to the location for the next scene.

If someone steals something from you outside of a mission, all of the above options are on the table. You can do as you please. Which makes the mission seeem all the more jarring.

Pretty much every mission is like that to some extent or another. If you're someone who would just chase the target and not even think about the other options, it's fine. For the rest of us, it's irritating.

It wasn't unusual when GTA V released five years ago. It is now. Why would anyone assume a new game would carry over previous, out-dated, gameplay elements from a different game series?

Because RDR is nothing more than a skinned GTA and GTA hasn't changed since GTA3. They weren't going to overhaul the core mechanics in this.

I know that now. Didn't know that before.

They spent 8 years basically reskining GTAV and adding in a hunting simulator. Had that been the tagline, I wouldn't have bought it. I expect that would have been the case for a lot of people.

Open ended missions can't be that hard. They're pretty common. If Rockstar didn't have time to move the core gameplay forward, maybe they should have spent a bit less time accurately modelling the way a deer skips through a forest?

Story wise it has picked up again after chapter 5 imo. That really was out of place!

And I don't know if I'm imagining it... I think I might be, but now I know about the weight thing, I have gone from underweight to normal weight, and it seems like my gunbelt doesn't hang like it used to. Cool detail if true.

In terms of gameplay I would compare it to the Assassin's Creed series. They had the same problem. The gameplay was so stale, with basically the same problem of being led everywhere and being far too constrained with mission objectives. They learned from it and moved with the times. You'll see far less forced fail states in AC games nowadays. 6 years ago in an AC game if you were told to not be spotted and you got spotted it would be game over. Now if you get spotted the game adapts and the mission continues.

To be honest, open ended missions can end up just as boring. Ghost Recon Wildlands was about as open ended as it gets and that became exceedingly boring after a couple of hours because there was no story or purpose.

I personally prefer the RDR style of more linear missions following a story that is actually half way interesting surrounded by open ended gameplay if you want it.

The game is exactly what I expected and what I wanted. I suppose if you were expecting it to be something else it could be disappointing.

i'm hoping we're all missing the point and online is where the real fun is going to be.

love the game so far and personally i think its a lot grittier and darker than GTA for example being able to hogtie people and drown them in the river or dragging them to their death round the town on the back of your horse, i must have spent an hour abducting and hogtieing people and throwing them in the river.

So far it is as expected for me. I screwed myself with bounties and had a couple of large ones and no cash. So I restarted and now have a fully upgraded camp and no bounties to pay off.

As far as story goes it is what I wanted from the game and I am happy. It’s taken my attention from fifa almost entirely (1 game in around a week). I am looking forward to completing this but I’m only 23% up to now.

I get the feeling that online could be much more frantic with a number of other outlaws roaming the dirt trodden paths of the world.

I would like future dlcs to expand the world and add a larger variety of choices to the missions, overcoming the “go inside this exact door to steal this exact item”. But other than that, I am very happy with this.

I am enjoying the story too!

I just had a mission right at the top of the map pop up and I was in Saint Denis. I decided I would travel all the way there on my horse. What followed has to be one of my favourite hours of gaming of recent times. On the way I came across a legendary animal and hunted it, made a short diversion to the trapper who was close anyway to sell the pelt and craft a new jacket. Then I came across 2 stranger missions that had interesting stories and little quests attached to them, with one leading to me finding a spot with a legendary fish which I then caught. In between all this there were also the odd random event and a bounty hunter attack. Also I came across a bear on the trail and hunted that too.

It was an hour of the game at its best, and at its best it really is pretty brilliant!

Edit - bye, I'm still only half way there!

Early mission to save preacher - he gets into a fight. I step in. Big guy floors me and I get up but then he swings again and in a panic trying t figure out how to block I press R2 and BOOM! I sawn off the poor fella in the face by accident!!! Someone sees me and im like sheeeeeet. Chase him down and threaten him. Phew.

Loving this game so far.

I think I have been looking forwards to the online component more than the regular game, enjoyed the little bit of GTA Online I played many years ago and I hope this is an even better experience!

I just had a mission where the objective was to steal something without being seen.... I crept around stealthily taking people out, but then I was seen... And no game over screen! The game just continued. See, they can do it!

Although I also found out why more of the missions aren't like this... Yeah, it's the AI. They were literally standing on top of unconscious bodies saying everything's fine, false alarm.

So it's dead then? When you die you don't go back to a checkpoint, but come back to life like some cowboy Jesus while your horse is gone for good?

Just did another debt collection quest, and I swear to god my game must be broken. Uploading the clip now. If this is how the game is meant to be then it's an absolute joke.

Open world my ass. It's completely on rails. It's like going back to the 90s.

Switch the console off and go and have a few top quality German beers, this game clearly isn’t for you.

I’ve honestly got no idea how you’re having so much trouble with it, on two platforms as well from what I can remember?

The game does have its faults but some stuff I’m seeing posted here is clearly PEBCAC.

I've been out to watch the rugby and had a few beers :P

Think I've got the xbox sharing stuff to work.

This is the one that's just happened, completely maddening. I go and do what I think is an open world activity, collecting a debt. I get there, we get into this QTE where I give him a smack, threaten him a bit....then suddenly....we cut to a cinematic? I'm riding through the woods? Where from? Where to? Why am I on a completely different horse from the one I rode in on? Why have I just been dumped back in control in some random place, I have no idea where it is, or why I'm there?

The horse that you see in the cinematic (NOT the horse I had when I started the cinematic), is the one I was looking for earlier....it wasn't back at camp...so why has it appeared now?
