Red Dead Redemption 2

My son played it for a while on an i5 2500k + RX 570, and it ran fine at 1080p. Not at anything like max settings, obviously, but it still looked pretty good and put out perfectly playable frame-rates (can't remember the exact settings and it did take a bit of tinkering but he ended with a up fairly solid 60+fps, I think, most settings medium). If anything you should have a slightly better experience with your hardware.

decided to take the chance and grabbed the ultimate edition for £33.99
hopefully i can get it running smoothly :D

It's the hidden things you find that really make it. Watching horses roll around. Someone sat and watched a coal train fill up over on reddit. Yes it has some bugs but the game world is one of, if not the most advanced I've played.

I think the best best testament to this game's excellence is that after completing it on PS4 it feels just as fresh and captivating on PC for me. It's absolutely is the most convincing wilderness depiction and with so much detail that I still discover content I missed previously. Even redoing stuff from my console playthrough is fun because traversing the world feels just amazing and I can't get enough of the atmosphere.

Not to mention 60fps makes it a completely different experience, on top of all the graphical enhancements.

Just finished the story mode, been playing since PC release November daily. Took my time and enjoyed the story. Played with honour. I was very sad my white arabian horse died at the end. Just got the epilogue to do now. My only criticism is the amount of time I spend in Menus, maps, crafting, sleeping, polishing, eating etc. Spoilt the flow of the game to have to be going in and out of play so much.

Without spoilers does the epilogue tie up any loose ends from the 6 story chapters?

Wish they would do a free-play weekend or something so i can see how this would run for me

anyone playing this running an i5 4670k + gtx 970 or similar setup?

I played initially on an old i7 3770 (i think) and an old 270x graphics card, looked good and was playable even if there was a little slowdown at times.

Yes, you have to play the Epilogue ;)

I do have to say that I didn't realise until I saw it referenced on Reddit that John is the main character in Red Dead 1 and this game is actually a prequel :o

yeah played a bit now using HUB recommended settings, couldnt get any fps info because afterburner decided not to work but it felt smooth enough and still looked great

i really see what people mean now about it being a slow paced game, but enjoying it so far

The epilogue bridges RDR2 with RDR1 and if you know the plot of that game, it makes it pretty impactful.

I think there's an in-game fps counter. I know you can do a benchmark from the settings.

The first/introductory chapter is markedly slower than the rest of the game.

I mean, it always has a general feeling of slowness compared to a lot of games, but notably more so in the first section.

Just bought this, download time...1 day  Stupid slow 'fibre' broadband. FTTP in the area, hopefully coming this year. Can't come too soon!

i know the feeling, was stuck with a 20Mbps line for years until they finally got fibre in round here... now 400Mbps :D download took 45mins or so

i did the benchmark and surprisingly my average fps was 39/40 but it felt smooth enough... might have a look around to see what settings i could change to get a bit more but i can cope with this if i have to

Just dreaming of 400Mbp/s :p Checkout the Hardware Unboxed video for optimising settings, up to 65% increase in FPS with little degradation in image quality.

The only time I noticed a difference was riding my horse. If you ride it with the camera behind it'll seem fine, but then move the camera up and look directly down it became noticeably faster.

Got a new gfx card and it's smooth now but I've found that it now looks to crisp, before it looked more film like.

yeah thats the settings im using, but i found which settings have the biggest hit on fps so will tweak them and test later on

Has anyone actually played through as a real piece of ****?

I played through as generally a good guy, paying bounties as they came up, rarely killing people that didn't need to be killed but I'm tempted to go back and replay as a bad guy, robbing banks, trains etc.

i generally try to play the good guy but there was one incident in the first town.. i got off my horse and bumped into this guy who then beat me to death so wouldnt mind finding him again!

on another note, ive not played the first one since the xbox 360 days so i could be wrong but i dont remember there being so much micro-management
like needing to eat/drink/clean weapons and tend to your horse

also is there any way to keep a rifle or something with you? seems everytime i get on then off my horse i need to grab my weapons back... which i keep forgetting so end up using just a pistol

One thing I only noticed last night, is that some npc's respawn even after you kill them. Take for example, the old man sitting on the porch at Emerald Ranch. After taking exception to his rather belligerent attitude, I decided to hurl a stick of dynamite at him. This resulted in the loss of all of his limbs; so obviously dead. I returned 72 hours later only to find him alive again. Makes me wonder if he's integral to a hidden side quest or something.

I get killed in a random duel in the first town, never had a random one since but there is a location later on where i just rode through and think I knocked someone with my horse and then there was red dots everywhere :D

The shoulder/back can be done via a gun shop I think, you set them as defaults but from what I've seen on reddit and my own experiences it just doesn't work. Most of the time it isn't an issue, until you find a random mission starts and all you've got is pistols :(

Yeah I shot an NPC that lived with some goats in the plains southeast of valentine. he was back after a reload.

Been great from launch, but started getting no sound from speakers about 3 days ago, headphones ok. Now cannot get into the single player game at all, just crashes when it finally loads into the world.

usually ERR_GFX_STAT not sure about the last. Also MEM_ERR etc etc etc.

I can however get into the online game. It was complaining after the crash that the virtual memory was the problem and so I increased my pagefile across drives to 8GB to make sure on top of my 11GB Video memory that it was satisfied. Still no good. Any ideas?
