Red Dead Redemption Thread

I've just reached Mexico and...this game just isn't really clicking with me.

I love GTAIV and it's expansions, and I love free roam sandbox games. This should have been my dream game given that I love Call of Jaururuaez and always wanted an open western game.

None of the characters really click with me apart from that Sten bloke? The loon who talks to himself. I've forgotten his name already! Everyone else I pretty much don't care for. I guess it's like GTAIV, as the only characters I liked were Badman and Jacob.

The weapons selection wheel is very fiddly and I just can't get used to it. I always end up fluffing up my selection in the midst of a fire fight. The shop purchase menu's too just 'feel' wrong. No bugs or glitches spotted so far I am happy to say.

The combat set pieces are Ok but not a patch on the ones in CoJ. I don't like how I can take cover and still somehow get hit if I am behind a rock either. The well placed TNT boxes/barrels are a nice touch.

I think it hasn't grabbed me because unlike GTAIV, there isn't really much to do when you hit a town. There are just a handful of shops to visit, and very little else. Occasionally some guy takes his anger out on a prostitute and that is about as exciting as things get!

The RAGE engine looks amazing in it's current incarnation but I guess that is due to the low detail requirements of the landscape in the first place, so models/cutscenes can be toned up. Oh and for the love of god let us skip the 'skinning/flower picking scenes'.

It just hasn't grabbed me like I thought it would tbh. Still going to give it a chance.

WOAH major glitch in the game.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through, so I approach a yellow X to start a mission, after a long load time I'm ending up in a duel with some random, with a load of story skipped. I won't obiously say what happened but it left me really confused. Pretty annoyed now since it's not like I can go back to watch it.

That happened to me on one mission just, was strange!

Just spent 4 hours tonight after a 3 hour session saying "Just one more mission" Looks like I've made a LOT of progress!! lol

Agree with a lot of people, its well made game and looks stunning but its boring, just want to get the missions done and it seems shorter than GTA 4, the guy who shoots at the beginning of the, needs to make an appearance, done 29 missions and still not met him, very strange, story is just non existent compared to GTA 4.

Side stuff is just like GTA 4, good once you do it but after that gets boring.

Personally rockstar should have made a Mafia type game, wild west is to open for a sandbox game.

Connection issues on PS3 version is just unbearable. Pretty pathetic. Can't get the online invite system right so pretty pathetic rushing game out without fixing major glitches and problems.

Poor Rockstar, Poor Sony.

Since swaping routers the other day iv had 0 problems playing online, thats with me inviteing my brother into free roam/gang matches ect.

What problems are you having online?

Still enjoying the game. I have nearly completed the story but im going to give this game a rest for a bit and concentrate on Fifa World Cup..

Hopefully when i come back to rdr it will feel fresher.

Suggestions then guys? It's either Skate 3 or this for me. Seems to be a mixed bag of personal opinions in here at the moment!

I don't want it be one of them games where you play it for a few days and it feels awesome, but then it starts to get boring.

Just finished the game and the last few missions were a real drag. Other than the last couple, it felt like a big backward step, almost tacked on to give an extra hour or two of gameplay to be honest. I won't comment in detail on the ending in this thread but I didn't like it :(

Overall, a great first 5-10 hours, followed by an increasing sense of deja vu and boredom. I'm glad to have finished it so I can sell it without losing too much, I don't have any desire to play it online, the cover and aiming mechanics are just not well developed enough.

The game feels great and amazing for the first few hours, then after that it gets a bit same old. Even though you unlock new towns etc and unlock Mexico, everything looks the same IMO. And half way through the story I found myself getting really bored with it and as said above the ending seemed a real drag and pointless and as if they added the last few missions to try and squeeze a few more hours of gameplay.

Missions are pretty much the same also, nothing new and nothing ground breaking. First few hours into the game I could have shouted from the roof tops how good it was, but it was only after this 'honeymoon' period that I noticed it was just full of rinse and repeat.

To your question though... 2 very different games. I would say RDR is worth a shot, but if you want a game where you wont get bored of seeing the same scenary, doing the same missions and also a game where you will find yourself picking it up and playing even after completing in weeks or months to come then get Skate 3. After you 100% RDR, they is pretty much nothing to do, as online is shocking and not worth the effort IMO.

I am only keeping hold of my copy for future DLC that might be worth getting.

Well I put 12 hours into this yesterday. Arrived in Mexico and thought that part of the game was incredibly boring. I'm not a fan of Mexico or anything related to it so that part of the game was seriously crap for me. Wanted to get it out of the way so I just concentrated on the missions to get it done.

Now i'm back in America and I can chill out for a bit not and get distracted by Poker etc :D

Ohh and another thing I got sick of in Mexico was the amount of ambushes you got. They could have mixed up the missions a bit instead of having a 'surprise' group of enemies appear from over the hill.

Put in 10 hours, done a load of sidequests, seen my horse mauled by cougars, stolen by prostitutes etc. and quite enjoying it so far. It's not as good as GTA though IMO, and has anyone else noticed that it's a fair bit tamer than GTA as a whole? You play as a good guy (not a drug dealer/gangster) and most the missions involve only vaguely shady stuff. There's no Hot Coffee either! :D

Only issues so far is bad frame rate in some places (specifically Thieves Landing) and the weapon selection is ****, even worse when you pull out your weapon to charge some enemies only to realise it's selected the knife for some reason and you get shot to pieces fumbling to get an actual gun out :(

Uh oh, sounds like Far Cry 2 again! Random ambushes = fail :(

Put my copy on the auction site :( Just not feeling it really. Finished the singleplayer, multiplayer doesn't appeal to me at all. DLC is the only thing thats making me somewhat apprehensive, but the first one is co-op multiplayer, so that puts me off right away. Pity cause it is a good game, think i just hyped it too much :(

The random ambushes are laughable :)
Every time I hear woman call for help, you turn around, spot a carraige and know its a setup... que drawing pistol... dead eye... 5 dead guys and a bint hogtied ;)

That or some muppet trying to make off with your horse :(,

Just lacks variety.

played over 40 hours and still want to play more of the SP. I'm going to start from around mission 10 and try and get the "spurred to victory" trophy. Have to complete 20 missions with the same horse.

I'd say this is the best game this gen... imo anyway. Even better than MGS4 and super mario galaxy. I guess I like it so much because Clint Eastwood is my favorite actor and I've seen all his western movies 4-5 times each.

Also, John is pretty much Josey Wales.
