Red Snapper Tripods have an offer on

@James J: I had the same thing, I think it's a common problem with the twist legs and after a bit of fiddling the legs went back in fine. My section didn't fall out but when closed fully one of the legs was about an inch longer than the others and in the process of 'fixing' them the section slipped out.

One of my ball heads arrived today, the RSH-12. I ordered 2 though in order to split delivery costs and unfortunately they seem to have misread the order and only sent one... the head is great quality though, panning is smooth and it locks fine, the QR plate is much much better than the dodgy one that came with the 3 way head and the best part is on my legs (RS-284) it now fits in the bag without any battles (the 3 way head's lever was awkward to get inside the bag), all in all a great buy at £50... only issue is it's much heavier than my travel pod legs :p

Also, discounts on all Redsnapper gear that's not on offer by using RED10 voucher code, just don't tell them it's still active eh? ;)

Only just read this sorry. The spirit level is only slightly off, which will affect the 3 way head but not so much the ball head, which I also have and use 99% of the time anyway. I also did a DIY fix on it but it doesn't feel as smooth as the other 2 legs now and I'm quite weary of "forcing" it to the same length as the other 2 lol. Its literally around 1mm shorter though by the looks of it after multiple attempts at repacking and unpacking, so no biggy really.

I've just had the RS324 legs / RSH12 delivered, seems very sturdy and well engineered!

I could do with a user manual, I think I've figured it all out except what the threaded insert/weird tool is that came spare with the head.. but having some instructions would be nice.. I've e-mailed Redsnapper to see if they have such a thing, but I'll muddle along if not!..

The pole? You get 2, a short and long one, the shorter one I keep on perma as I often spider legs the tripod so the camera is hooting up form the ground:

:D I sussed the shorter column out... :D

And thanks for your Youtube video, that prompted me to get Redsnapper!

Other questions..
Do you use the 3 grub screws on the tripod mount to lock the head into place? there are no recesses on the RSH-12, and just tightening by hand seems sufficient, I didn't want to mark up the RSH-12 base or put the head mount under too much duress! Although just checking again, it's damn hard to get the head off the mount if it's tightened without using the grub screws.. It seems better to leave it a little loose, then use the screws to lock it in place?

Ah that little thread thing is for camera/equipment that don't use the standard tirpod thread! The tool on the right just is a screwdriver, a weird one at that :p

The ball head is very tough, I adjust the little screws so they're tight but not too tight and then the big screw is used to tighten and loosen for movement :)

Thanks! I see now, that's for mounts with the smaller thread size! (Just seen the reversible bolt on the leg mount, it matches that diameter!).

The other question was actually about the 3 screws that are on the leg mount bit..

If I screw the head flush to that mount 'tightly' by hand, then getting it undone is a pain.. I assume you screw the head to the mount loosely then use the grub screws to 'lock' the head to the 'mount'..?

:)

Ah that part in itself screws off, I just screwed the head on to the main thread and have no problem unscrewing it!

Eat more spinach :D

I think I eat too much spinach :D, I did it up so tight, no one in the office could un do it (I'm not known for my lightness of touch :D)

I'll perhaps not do it quite that tight and just use a fraction of pressure from those grub screws to lock it that bit extra.. :)

From my 10 mins playing with it in work, it's flippin awesome for the money (£135 delivered using a *cough* no idea where if this is supposed to work for everything *cough* code I found via google)..

Will get a camera on it and give it a whirl, loving the tension setting mechanism, and the pan is so smoooooooooth....

Thread bump!

Was looking into to getting a RSF324 (non carbon) and the ball head. How are people finding it three years on? Is it a wise decision going non carbon. I want ruggedness, not portability.

Many thanks all.

Personally I'd go Carbon if you're travelling often. I sold mine a bit later and got the Velbum Ultra Rexi L and that's sweet, strong and light.

And if I wasn't travelling much with it? I was kinda hoping you would reply, you were inspiration at looking at the Red Snapper in the first place!

Then stick with the non carbon :D If I wasn't lugging the tripod around caves and climbing with it etc then I'd probably still have mine!

No complaints with my 283 legs after a few years of use, weighty but sturdy and don't mind the weight personally. Survived happily in sea water, sand, rain and whatnot. Only issue i had was a leg section fell out after a year half / two years of use, it still locked under compression from the leg locks but nothing to stop it dropping out if not locked. Contacted their support and they had replacement bits sent free of charge within a day or two and included some spares as well. Totally faultless service.

Fantastic - Seems like the Red Snapper will do the job - There is so much choice out there so knowing you guys have experience with it is vital for me!

I will say though that I prefer the Calumet 7049 pro ball head to the red Snapper one I had. The Calumet one is just better featured and lighter, though more expensive. So while I'd keep the tripod if I wasn't travelling often, I'd certainly upgrade the ball head.

Personal preference of course!

I had a look at your review on the Calumet. It's nice. I just don't know if I can justify the spend though my mentality has always been buy quality equipment that will last a lifetime.

I may go for the RS324 as I want the weight but go for the Calumet head. Unless you have other suggestions I can look at? I'm fairly new to the tripod world, I always shoot handheld but I want to start getting consistent results in certain situations.

Calumet have a range of ball heads of course, the 7049 is the top end one. They're all good quality of course (apart from the lowest plastic one I suppose!).

I think for the price it's hard to beat. It's got Manfrotto level of toughness and specs, yet half the cost or better.
