Release dates for C400, Vertex 3, G3

yea thats abit to long for me to wait, and Gibbo you probably cant say but will the C400 cost about the same as the C300 does atm?

Some of you might find this interesting, I went away and tabled this up quickly:

Looks like the C300/Vertex 2 are the way to go if you want cheap SSD space.

Just bought a C300. If the G3s come out in summer and look like they're in danger of improving prices at least ill have had a good few months of SSD goodness.

I went for OcUK prices and stock as we're not allowed competitor talk on the forums. :)

You do realise that OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB and Crucial C300 64GB are the same capacity in reality?

And that would be 59.6GB iirc. Gotta make some adjustments to this table ;)

Really???

Quick check in my computer shows

C: 59.5GB (a C300 64GB)
and
G: 55.8GB (a Vertex 2E 60GB)

I'm very much wrong then :(

Got the impression from these forums, someone else has hinted that Intel and OCZ state almost real capacity of the drives and Crucial doesn't.

To be fair Mr Krugga, if I went away and researched what every single drive formatted to/had available, i'd be doing it until mid next week!

It was more designed to show which drives offer the best £/GB. :)

If you would like to expand the table, please feel free.

Already did expand your table mate, I had to edit my post earlier as I was asking you to send me the table but before I knew, I had it done in Excel already :( :p

Anyway, I would upload it here but it contains prices from competitors as I'm interested in the overall prices of SSDs on the market. After a quick comparison with some of the larger etailers, I have not found a drive that would not be 5-20% cheaper elsewhere... I guess market changes rapidly etc.

If you're interested in the table, I'd happily send it to you later on today.

I'm all but sold on either the C300 or the Emcrest, but thanks for the offer.

It's just a question of if I want to take it up the backside from Intel regarding pricing. :(

Don't do it mate. Go for the C300, it'l see you through till the G3's are released at price gouge point, then drop down to what we're all hoping. In the mean time you'll have noticed no difference going for the slower SSD, but will have saved likely the price of the SSD again! Then you can spend that difference on the G3, have two SSD's, and moar capacity :D

I just don't trust the reliability of the C300 vs the Intel drives. Sure, it's rare that the drives actually die, and OcUK would replace it quickly. But it's such a pain in the butt if it actually does. :(

I couldn't be bothered to wait any longer for the Intel drives so I got myself the C300 the other day. So far, so good. Even if I did think that I screwed up the firmware upgrade at first :p

Yeah, y'see, it's this that makes the decision oh-so-much harder.

Anandtech said:
Marc Prieur has been around writing about hardware for as long as I can remember (think back to the old school Tom days). Late last year he published some particularly controversial numbers on his website: failure rates of various PC components according to a French etailer. Among the components were SSDs and the numbers are below:

SSD Failure Rates - Hardware.fr

Intel 0.59%
Corsair 2.17%
Crucial 2.25%
Kingston 2.39%
OCZ 2.93%

I mean that says it all really doesn't it. Having said that, it is based on the upto-now X25 drives, based on Intel's own controller. But I doubt Intel would release something that risked tarnishing that image.

Remember as well; the OCZ drives are nearly 3%. That means that nearly 1 in 33 come back faulty. That's pretty poor odds when you consider how many are sold.

You said it yourself - Intel ElmCrest uses Marvel controller meaning that the reliability is likely to be similar to other drives based on such controllers.

I haven't read of my SSDs that died, most would probably do that in the beginning of their life-cycle and that should not cause many problems.

I got my C300 128GB this morning, there's going to be so much messing around with two drives now :(

This is probably far too early to ask but any ideas when we can expect the big foot version of the vertex three? How long did we have to wait for the vertex two?

Went for an "as new" Vertex 2e 240GB in the end. Got it for £300.

Will let you know how I get on. My first foray into Sandforce.
