Following up on the report that the PLAYSTATION 3 would see a $100 price cut taking place the week after E3 2007, GameDaily has confirmed with "a merchandising manager at one of the world's biggest retailers" that the 60 GB version of the PS3 will indeed drop to $499, starting on July 12, one day after Sony's E3 press conference. GameDaily also reports that the new price is indeed indicative a retail-wide price drop, not a Circuit City specific sale, as a handful of speculators have posited.

Hopefully this will be a worldwide price cut and not just the US. They could do with shaving about £125 off the RRP of the UK price IMO.

Sony could really start to build momentum with a significant price drop and some quality games set to appear in the near future. Let's hope it happens.

They desperately need it to happen and the market needs it as well to maintain competition.

Saw it last night I cant be sure if its just a retailer drop or an official Sony price cut. On the flyer it says something like from 15 -21 July but that doesnt mean it wont be a permanent price cut. Also a shame that the 5 blue ray titles dont apply to the UK. If it is a official price cut its a start probably mean the PS3 will be officially about £350 in the UK, so nearer 325 or 350 with a game HDMI lead in online retailers. Still excellent value for money in my opinion for what you get for you money, I think its the comparative lack of games that harms sales most though.

Agree on both points.

I'm not sure the PS3 would sell that much more at the current price, even if it did have a decent catalogue of games.

Agreed. I think it's definately the price which is holding back sales rather than games. For anyone who doesn't own a 360 then theres quite a decent amount of games out for it already with more due out very soon.

Baring in mind the UK version is £100 more expensive than its US counterpart anyway. We are not just paying a bit more but a lot more for it here. If the price came down to £300 then it would still only be inline with the current US price (I know there is more duty and taxes here etc etc but it is not an excuse)

Unfortunately the US/UK is never goning to change, but a price cut would be welcome, if only to nudge the xbox 360 down again so I can afford to buy one in time for GTA4 ;)

The problem they are having is the divide between the PS3 and the 360 is not even remotely closing up, but instead the Wii is gaining the market share. People only have so much money to spend and not everyone can afford more than 1 console or the games.

Without a big enough gaming base Sony are loosing the exclusives (which would sell the console in it's droves) to cross-platform, since for the developers this makes the most financial sense.

They have not helped matters with the price of the PS3 relative to it's competition either. The 360, Wii, PS2, DS, PSP & PC are all competition for gaming market, remembering the average consumer isn't goiing to blow 1k on all the consoles. PS2 is still popular for the kids and families buying for kids due to price of console, games and the content and age suitable games.

My question is that, will a price cut really help matters now? Nexgenwars figures (albeit crude are afaik in the right area) shows that the PS3 is at ~ 1/3 of the sales of the 360 and 2/5 of the Wii.

I also think that the GT series is so long comming since the last one, it may not be the massive seller of the PS3 it need to be. Especially and more importantly, at the price the PS3 will still be at. Same with GTA4, where, since that is now multi platform, the 360 will be the cheapest way to get it.

The general consumers have been voting with their spending and despite all the support for the PS3 on forums, which to be fair are most likely the enthusiasts, Sony must be disapointed with its sales so far, when comparing against the Wii etc. Not taking anything away from what the PS3 is capeable of though as it is a good machine, but where Microsoft are comming up to their 3rd year in all reigons, Sony are still well in their first averaged across all reigons. The furure for the PS3 may be looking brighter but average people want to be gaming now, based on what is available (consoles +games).

People look at the Wii with contempt for its lack of next gen graphics etc but it is a good family fun gaming console and has parent appeal (for purchasing for the kids or to play on). Heck even simple board games sell such as manopoly, risk etc sell and these have no graphics at all. The Wii proves graphics arn't everything and so far in console sales terms over the last year, the Wii is outshining all.

So in summary

1) PS3 Price cuts are needed to see that sub £300 with a game to make it properly attractive to the general consumer in the UK/EU.
2) The 360 will have maybe another £25-50 shaved off it at least. They could have course continue to buy out the market from Sony by matching the price drop (this is a fair possibility due to the duration in it's lifecyle 3rd year Q4)
3) The Wii won't need to change its price for a long while but I would imagine will do more bundle packs with latest releases.

Excellent value for money does not make it excellent value unfortunately. And in real terms it not a £400 console its a £300 console at global dollar prices.

Taking nothing away from what it can do or the quality of it as it is very good, it is between a rock and a hard place on Value For Money vs Actual Cost vs Consumer Spending.

Well i wouldnt call it world wide but it also seems theres going to be a 150ca$ price drop in Canada about the same time, again according to game retailers over in Canada. Just wait and see I guess but a $500 PS3 makes it a £250 using like for like and not including taxes so maybe it will touch the £300 (with UK mark up) here with no games or extras.

Well this just came through the news,
By Kiyoshi Takenaka and Kentaro Hamada
TOKYO, July 6 (Reuters) - Sony Corp. (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) has no plans to cut the price of its PlayStation3 (PS3) at present to pep up demand and counter surging sales of Nintendo's (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) rival game console Wii, Sony's president said on Friday.

"At present we have no plans," to cut the PS3 price, Ryoji Chubachi told Reuters in an interview.

Sony has packed cutting-edge technology such as a Blu-ray high-definition optical disc player into the PS3, driving up production costs and making its retail price more than twice as expensive as the Wii.

The higher price tag has been cited has one of the main reasons the PS3 has been trailing the Wii in sales, and analysts have been widely expecting Sony to soon slash the price to spur on demand.

Chubachi also said that Sony was on track to hit its target of a 5 percent operating margin for the year to March 2008.

He also said the operating margin at its mainstay electronics unit is likely to overshoot its target of 4 percent for the current year.

I think the key words is "at present" does that mean today or next week at E3 or not in the near future?. If Sony was going to announce a price drop they would rather it be at E3 than through some posters at US retailers. It was possibly part of there big announcement at E3 so deny it now and "surprise" everyone next week when he moonies they crowds with a $499 PS3 tattooed on his butt! (ok maybe a bit OTT there) :D

I'm currently looking to pick up a used PS3, do you think its worth waiting a couple of weeks to see what happens with pricing in the uK?

Sony would operate at a HUGE loss if the price cut for the European PS3 were to go higher than £50.
I'm pretty sure I read that their production costs have dropped significantly so maybe they wont be losing any more than they were at launch.
