Retailer Confirms PS3 Price Cut

Hopefully they do cut it. But in all honesty Sony released the PS3 way too early. Blu Ray isn't even here properly yet. It's too early, and even though it's future proof it's not now.

Now there's a plan - don't release any Blu-Ray players until the format has been established in the shops

Sony really do need a European price cut soon.

It seems the new "thing to do" at work is for customers to buy both a Wii and a 360. Had quite a few people in that have bought a 360 for themselves and a Wii for the kids.

Nintendo have done really well in marketting it at a slightly different audience and pricepoint, as people are buying it in addition to another console, as opposed to viewing it as a direct competitor.

We have PS3's sat around for ages, yet to sell out of them even from launch day. And yet whenever we get any wii's in they sell out within the day, even the 360 sells consistently.

The price of the PS3 really is putting off the average consumer.

Problem is, Sony are now walking straight into a 3 year warrenty and further price drop by Microsoft, as well as a catalogue of tantalising exclusive games.

It seems everytime Sony try something positive Microsoft have an answer at the moment.

True, but the three year warrenty only covers the "3-Red lights" issue and nothing else. You still only get a year for the controllers, the disk drive or any other problems that could occur. I don't think they'll even advertise it too much to be honest as there are too many things it excludes.

Really the PS3 needs to be around the £350 mark with some good exclusive games like Metal Gear to be competitive.

We shall see i suppose.

Cover the vents on the 360, sorted. :)

Im quite sure there will be a 360 price drop of some sort when a PS3 drop is announced, some analysts think that this exteneded warranty will be instead of a price drop but i dont think so. I dont know for sure but i think some people see the PS3 price and think thats a lot of money, without having to compare the cost of the 360, if you see what i mean. Its at a high price point at the moment and I think that, rather than the price of the competition is the problem for some people. For example if a PS3 was £300 and 360 premium was £200, i dont think people would think the PS3 was that more expensive, considering the Blue Ray player, WIFI, and free online MP.
You could say the same for the PS3 with exclusive games coming out before christmas think there is something like 13+ exclusives out before christmas on the PS3. The 3 year warranty for the TRROD is good news for the consumer, but Id rather have a car that didnt break down, than one breaks down over 20x more but will be repaired if its only the most common fault. One good thing is that I just found that my HD TV has a 3 year pickup and replace warranty for free also!

The PS3 is simply too expensive over here and relatively elsewhere, coupled with the fact it has very few games.

Consumers are wise to the fact its not anymore next gen than the 360.

Having read the news and responses on a few more forums today, appart from the blind ignorant fanboys, the consensus is the PS3 is too expensive (good value is a different thing), not enough games compared to the 360, and with the age old reliabilty argument dieing a death this week due to MS's new warranty support, it has very little to support its self in the market. BR is not enough of a selling feature as they hoped it would be by the look of it as predicted.

Imagine if MS did a 360 GTA4 bundle premium for ~ £200 come the end of the year....PS3 would be left treading water (probably will be anyway).

So even if the PS3 reaches the £300 point (which it already is/should be in dollar terms :( ) I doubt it will help matters.

I couldn't disagree more with most of what you said, but then we all have our own views on what the future holds ;)

Sony Japan denies there will be any price cuts. It's not going to happen I'm afraid.

Care to point out what flaws were in his post? As far as I can see, he's pretty right. The PS3's blu-ray capabilities are not proving to be an effective sales-pitch as Sony anticipated, and there are still no new games out for the system that are worth more than a second glance. Sony will definitely suffer if Microsoft does indeed announce a price cut and/or Halo+GTA bundle. They have a console that is priced at least 370 pounds, with no games, against a far cheaper console and almost always superior versions of multiplatform games. The big glaring fault in Sony's strategy is not being about to answer Halo 3's release. Their September lineup is absolutely and shockingly barren.

Of course they will deny it as they dont want sales to stall on the lead up. Remember when MS said they were definately NOT making a revised 360 with a bigger HDD and HMDI? Same thing!

Or it could be that their operating loss is far too much to already slash prices. They have said this many many times before. Any price cuts (and there are already loads) are from the retailers operating at a loss already.

They've started selling 60Gb PS3 in the US for $499 this weekend in some stores , I dont know it may just a retailer thing or pre-emptive for E3. Saw them in a certain supermarket for £415 (or less?) with Oblivion or RFOM or Motorstorm.
