Retiring at 33 to play MMOPRGs, am I mad?

I've got a mortgage free flat with broadband and a soon to be kick@ss PC (if I can finalise the damn spec). I'm thinking of chucking in my 60k a year job and playing mmorpgs. My only problem is how to pay the bills without taking some menial part time job. I work in I.T. (2\3rd line support) so it's tough to get a job working from home. I've only got a few k in cash which won't last too long. The flat is only worth 140k so downsizing isn't an option.

Anyone done something like this before, or have any advice on how to secure an income?

Sod it where do you work? I'll take your job and pay you 15k a year (pre-tax)

Edit. Heck i'll even throw in £50 P/m into a pension for you.

I've already done this before. I was at uni but quit to play Eve Online. I gota bit bored so got a job in Asda on the checkout's. After 3 years I was on £80k a year so brought a few accounts on World of Warcraft. I've now got 3 level 60 characters and play them all at once on my old IBM laptop. I even put together a small program in word so I could play WoW on my mobile so I never lost any game time.

Back to reality: I think you need to go outside and smell the fresh air. It may sound rude but I think the most of the people on here are doing you a favour and offering you some sound advice.

I call official Shennanigans.

Bits that don't add up.

£140k flat. In London. If you live in a shoebox, maybe.

£60k 2nd / 3rd line support. DBA / SA or application specific, maybe, and then you would need to be in a semi-management position, all assuming you work in a bank. Which I have my suspicions about, as banks tend to vet out those that might otherwise jack it all in for an Otaku existence.

But, if it's true, go for it - Pop out to TK Maxx (you need to save the pennies, after all) and buy some outsized tighty-whiteys, develop a large gut, put on your robe and wizard hat, then cast lvl. 8 chicken of the Infinite to your heart's content.

um I dont find this that ridiculous

I am currently rather fond of World of Warcraft and play it for a stupid amount of time each and everyday, as many here will testify I'm not a total loser and know how to let my hair down (also funny to those who know me), but I just enjoy the escapism - its not that my life sucks I have a an apartment in the upper east side of manhattan, I have a very nice car and a great job. But if I could I wouldnt mind just being able to play computer games all day :D I have no desire to leave my flat due to a 4foot snow fall so the lure of gaming is higher than ever, I'm sure whne the summer months roll around and the short skirts get equipped by the extensive female population of NYC I shall once again don my hat of hunting but for now MMO's rock my world :)

I made a big mistake posting my salary and flat, it seems everyone wants to focus on that, rather than my original question. The flat isn't in London, it's in a rural town, I'm renting in London. I have just finished paying off the mortgage, hence why I have little money. My salary statement was purely there to say, I earn a reasonable income but would prefer to give it up for much less. The funny thing is, if I said I was downsizing to a rural location to grow organic vegetables, I'm sure the responses would have been different. Why is everyone so negative to online games? The media has perpetuated this theory if you spend a long time playing online games, you're going to have a heartattack and die in front of the screen. I spend 6 hours a week keeping fit and I'm in no way obese. I do take some of your comments on board and it is a bit of a reality check. It looks as though it won't be possible, purely due to the financial contraints, I can keep dreaming though.

Try not to be so harsh on people that may have alternative aspirations to the social "norm".

If anyone has actually done something like this please email me, I would appreciate you comments.

Growing organic veg is a slightly more wholesome pastime than casting level 3 eroticism on a pixelated avatar of a fat middle-aged German called Klaus, who pretends he is a girl called Emma.

There is money to be made in MMORPGs, however - you could always become a gold farmer, buy / sell accounts or just gank for cash.

Personally, I would take the small-holding option - I have my heart set on a small plot, with a restaurant / small hotel on the side. All homegrown and homecooked food.

And an underground gaming bunker.

Probably because you never mentioned the flat was in a different area, nor that you would be downsizing, nor that you would be moving to a rural location.

cant believe this thread is still going, i think its sad tbh. If ure willing to give up a job to sit in ure room playing MMORPGs then something aint quite right. Yes of course everyone would love to sit and play games all day but come on grow up lol

I havent worked for like 2 months and i can safely say ill be glad to going back to work. And u say u keep fit etc. but if ure willing to quit a job to play a game i wonder what else will take a back seat to make room for it.

Go on a holiday and then get back to work lol stupid and pointless thread, if u really wanna do it then u wouldnt be asking on a forum would you? Why does it matter what other people u dont even know think

How did she get that across to you? I've been trying to get this point across but failing badly

She e-mailed him.

Nearly lol. We had a row and then she explained that she was feeling rather left out and lonely. When I thought about how much time I was ingame I could see she really had a very good point.
However evenings in the living room watching soaps are not exactly a motivator to quit MMORPGs either.
