Awesome I can give up my job to sit at home all day and play games and make the same money???

No, you read that wrong obviously unless your taking the ****

He has paid off his house and is sitting on a job paying £60k a year, but he is thinking about quitting to play MMORPGs and getting a paper round just to afford to pay the bills etc.

I've got a mortgage free flat with broadband and a soon to be kick@ss PC (if I can finalise the damn spec). I'm thinking of chucking in my 60k a year job and playing mmorpgs. My only problem is how to pay the bills without taking some menial part time job. I work in I.T. (2\3rd line support) so it's tough to get a job working from home. I've only got a few k in cash which won't last too long. The flat is only worth 140k so downsizing isn't an option.

Anyone done something like this before, or have any advice on how to secure an income?

Can't be bothered reading all the replies, but all I will say is that with a postcount of 5, I seriously think you're someone who has jumped onto a forum and tried to start something controversial.

IF you were on 60k, I'd reckon you'd have earned that with hard work and a brain. To throw that away, along with your house and financial dependency is nothing short of ludicrous.

So no, sorry, I don't think you're mad, but bluffing...

1. I want the top end ATI card, 1900XTX?, I think crossfire is the dual cards? which is too expensive so I'll stick with one.
Hmmmm im sure with 60k a year and a rent free flat you could afford that second 1900XTX, i cant believe you all fell for this ;) .

The last time I built a system was 18 months ago and now I haven't a clue what is going on, SLI, XTX, crossfire, dual core, 64 etc etc.

I currently have a P4 2800, asus mobo (unsure of model), 2gb corsair ram, ATI x800 pro, SATA HD, very good case, 500w PSU and a 19" tft.

£60k a year and no mortgage my backside :)

Not taking sides or believing any stories myself, but if the situation was for real I would probably say, what about in-game trading? People sell gold etc from game online, I think its Lineage 2 that is based upon people spending real money for in-game items?

I know first hand that It's possible (for a short time while the game is at it's peak of popularity) to support yourself from the money you can get from selling in-game items/gold. It does require you to be top of the game, play a lot more than any 9-5 job but it's possible. (I made around £3000 in 3months)

I've been addicted to MMO playing twice, first with UO in the early days but luckily I was at school so didn't have much of a social life going out at night etc, second time playing EQ while in my 6th form/year out and part of my first year at uni. I remember raiding for 36 hours straight with my guild, this became a fairly common occurrence between the hardcore part of the guild.

I was addicted and sacrificed many social activities, it was bad and very hard to get out of, my only saving grace was games don't last forever and I actually started to get bored. It was all fun while I was playing, now I'm glad it's over and I'll never let myself get into a game as much again. Just too much to loose now.

I know how the games can affect you, but it IS only a game. 2-3 years time when everyone is playing another game what have you achieved? Probably a few friends who will go onto play the “next big thing” with you, no advancement in your life if anything rather the opposite. I would say while your young get out any enjoy your life, save up some money and work out when you can retire early, when that time comes think of the MMO games that will be out then! Play them without guilt, as much as you want knowing you have enough to support yourself for the rest of your life.

I know an easy way to make money with the setup you are describing. Come to World of Warcraft, level a mage / warlock / rogue to lvl 60 and farm Tyr's Hand for gold. Then sell it on the internet :)

You only have to compete against ten million foreign farmers trying to get rich in the same way :)

It's Monday morning and I've not had my coffee yet.
So alas I haven't had the chance to read through all four pages of this thread.

Anyway, has the OP mentioned or hinted at the company or kind of company that pays 60k to 2nd/3rd line computer monkey's?
It's just I'm thinking that if they pay that kind of wage to that level of support, me being in an "IT Manager" kind of role I should be able to retire within about 5-7 years of joining said company.

I still reckon he could do it, it would mean selling his flat and investing his capital in the cayman islands or switzerland so that the greedy taxman doesn't get any. Then get onto housing benefit, fi you can knock up a teenager that will obviously boost your income, and keep several dogs like all the ***** travellers, you get free money for that too.. the claim JSA.... you'll be on a fairly decent income with no mortgage, heck you could probably even afford a drug addiction as well as an mmorpg addiction.

I think you have a few options with £140k in equity, but it requires careful planning and it will require moving somewhere cheaper, e.g. South America ..

1) Rent the flat and live on the proceeds

2) Sell the flat, put the money into the Stockmarket and live off of the Interest.

£140k is about $244,328 at todays rates. 7.5% on that per annum is about $18K. That will go a long way in South America. It's more than most of them earn per year thats for sure.

Somewhere like Brazil, Chile, Paraguay .. All nice places to live with Broadband, on the same timezone as the U.S. and, of course, Hot babes. :)
may i suggest renting flat and hitting it off to south africa ?

One of the things I find most surpising about this thread is the amount of people that think you cant get a 2nd/3rd line job earning 60k a year. In london it really isn't that uncommon a wage.

mcast123 i bet is one of those people who is always online, night and day. you wake up at like 4 in the morning to check a download and there he is, trying to talk to you. How did he even know you got up  ?!
