Retro console and games thread

Just picked up a nice unit for the gaming/streaming room so i thought id put a couple of pics on here . We still need shelving for the xbox and PS2 games :)

Awesome little set up.

Although I'd have to get something to replace the mouse, unless you're gaming with it on the PC?

There's a MS or Logitech keyboard with a trackpad built in option, worth considering?

Also, wow, I had that Halo and Midtown Madness 3 bundle the year it came out - amazing memories.

Should i be looking at picking up a old CRT tv or something for playing older consoles on? I have used the n64 on my modern tv and it worked ok just found it to be quite bright!

If so what should i look for?

The general consensus is a Sony Trinitron.

But because CRT TV's are dirt cheap I bagged a 24" Bang & Olufsen a while back for £30 and I'm happy with that.

Cheers, yeah the PC does get used for gaming but its mostly racing games like dirt rally (which is rock hard lol), fifa 16 and witcher 3 or any game we can use the 360 controllers or wheel on :)

we finally have moved in properly and recently i setup some connections / inputs into my av receiver for my

snes
mega drive
ps2 slip
n64
gamecube

we had a great weekend gaming, my daughter (10) loves playing the old crash games, much more than the more complicated recent games on xb1 etc.

Just a shame no car boots on for cheap games :(

Thanks will look into it! Need to get some games together now! Kind of want ones i may have missed etc

What are some key megadrive/n64 games you lot would recommend? Aside from the usual classics mario sonic zelda etc? Im looking to buy a bundle of sonic 1-3 +knuckles but dont know what the right price would be!

Thanks think this is what i am after :)

So how do you determine if a game is priced well? Just shop around until you find the cheapest or is there a value site or something? I imagine once you are invested in collecting stuff it comes naturally?

It is a buyers market, meaning it will sell for what you think it's worth. To get a ballpark figure check completed listings, also there will be a price guide somewhere for any platform, get an up to date one.

My first point still stands however.

Depends how quickly you want the games and if you want loose or boxed games.

Patience can save you a lot of money, only buy from eBay if you don't get any joy anywhere else.

Search YouTube for hidden gems videos for each system.

Metal Jesus Rocks does a lot of hidden gems videos.

Classic Game Room (Lord Karnage) has loads of reviews for popular and obscure games on loads of systems.

Game Sack has a decent channel too.

Checkout these sites as well:

Most N64 games haven't aged well, maybe try out games on your PC first before you spend any money, if you know what I mean. (E word discussion not allowed)

Good tips thanks! What would you say ages the best? I imagine anything 2d really? As opposed to old blocky poly 3d :D

Pretty much.

2D platform, shmups and fighters still hold up today as long as they were good games originally.

Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Mario Sunshine etc are still playable although the camera controls aren't as evolved as today's games.

But something like Goldeneye or the early Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo games aren't that great by today's standards no matter how much you love them back in the day.

As I said earlier in the thread avoid most racing and sports games from any era or console unless it's the latest version.

3D games from PlayStation 2, GameCube and original Xbox are about as far back as I'd go. I recently completed Jak and Daxter on PS2 as well as being around 70 shines into Mario Sunshine. Currently playing the first Halo and it's getting very relative and boring after about 3 hours in.

Also playing Sonic 3 at the minute and for the most part it's still a decent game.

Really want to plug it into sonic and knuckles, made the game huge!

Tempted to look into snes, never had one it passed me by! What would i be looking at price wise for a console to consider it a good deal?

I've found that collecting for a system you didn't own originally makes it harder to get into the games for it.

I never owned a SNES either, but ended up with a couple of them plus a load of games in December last year. Needless to say that some of the games I'd never heard of but tried didn't hold my attention for very long. I even had a big box copy of Super Metroid that I couldn't get in to.

Maybe if I'd spent a decent amount of money acquiring them then I might have given them more time, but I think the lack of any nostalgic attachment can prevent you getting into some of even the most popular games of their time.

The Mario titles are still great, but I have played those a little in the past so they seem to hold my attention for longer.

Even so, I sold everything on an just kept the some of the Sega stuff.

SNES games and consoles are more expensive than Mega Drive, especially complete in box games.

A SNES that hasn't yellowed much with an original controller and say Mario World, is going to be in the £50-70 region.

A Mega Drive with an original controller and Sonic will as low as £25-30.

Thats a good point mate o can see that happening to me too! Maybe i will stick to megadrive for the 2D era as i already own one and have a few games!

Heres my N64 lot so far, may try and replace some carts for boxed versions! Smash bros and kart are in really good condition!

Dreamcast was another fave of mine but not many games really

The SNES is a brilliant machine and there are so many good games for it. Problem with it like pretty much everything retro, its stupid how much games fetch now.

In all honestly the whole price of the retro hobby is getting out of hand and I really question any purchases I make now. Last game I bought was a Japanese Copy of Castle Of Illusion on the Mega Drive and I paid £9 for it. I don't buy many games now as they are stupid prices, and has made me super selective on what I pick up.

Mind you I really want a Mint CIB Copy of Balloon Fight on the Famicom for a reasonable price as I LOVE that game!

Maybe as the 40-50 year old gamers buy less of the 8bit and 16bit as their collections max out then prices will start to fall. Then the next generation will be paying top dollar for PS2, GameCube and Xbox games.

Mind you the GameCube has already started as far as games go, especially first party titles.

Noticed that with cube too, funnily enough i told a mate im looking to build up a small collection and he has offered me his gamecube as he was selling anyway! Not sure what he has with it or how much he wants but might get a good deal

It's more the games than the console. Maybe because the original Wii is backwards compatible. Even multi platform games cost more on GameCube than PS2 or Xbox for the same title.

Because people have clocked onto this and turned collecting retro into a business or profiteering over the past 5 years. Hopefully this will pass in the next few years.

Now charity shops are doing this, which is wrong if they marking up their price against ebay.

Buyers have to take some of the blame too. At the end of the day if people are prepared to pay the prices then you can't blame it all on the sellers.

Since I started collecting again I've mainly bought job lots. That allows me to sell on what I don't want and keep a what I want at minimal cost to myself. But every common game I've sold has been the cheapest on eBay, so I don't think I'm helping fuel the ever increasing prices on eBay. Anything uncommon I've sold as an auction and let the market decide the price.

I get annoyed by people selling on non eBay sites but expect top eBay prices.

Been looking to get myself an N64 but have recently noticed how much the price of them have gone up! £50 just for a working console and the decent games are also £50 a pop with Bad Fur Day going for £100 (I traded this in for £15 back when the Gamecube just came out)!!!

I have had an urge to play Banjo Kazooie again after I got it for my Birthday back in 1998. Got Rare replay for £12 delivered and just installed it on my xbox one. Okay it hasn't got the Nintendo IP games but my god I forgot how much of an awesome developer Rare was. Even after all these years I just had a 4 hour straight session on Banjo Kazooie. :D Never got to play Jet Force Gemini so think that will be my next game!

My 8 year old daughter had a fantastic time playing Battletoads with me earlier. TBH she has had more fun with these Retro games than anything on her Xbox 360!
