Retro console and games thread

Just seeing what would be worth getting.

I have:
PS1, 2, 3 and 4.
SNES
Nintendo 64
Commodore 64
Xbox One
Vic 20
Gamecube

was out about in Canterbury and the old girl said she'd treat me to a console I found in a retro shop, the mega drive 1 (with the surround sound) but wasn't sure what games it had apart from Sonic and Aladin that my grandad now has.

What console would be worth getting? If any?

Would recommend you look at a PC Engine or a Saturn. The PC Engine has a huge library of games and so few have played them in the UK, you can get an 8GB flash card and an everdrive and have the entire library!

Conversely, the Saturn is the true gamer's choice at the moment, didn't do well over here but was monstrously popular in Japan and now they've managed to create a solution to load ROMs via the rear VCD extension port, you'll have access to the best 2D games ever made. The Saturn consoles will soon become very much in demand for this reason so now is the time to buy before the rush.

So I have 2 gigantic boxes of gaming stuff I am parting with to support our move. Lots of stuff in there but nothing I would miss thankfully.

Trying to sell it as a bulk lot atm to guy I know who owns retro shop :)

Watchoo got?? Might be interested in something

Just taken delivery of a 2nd and 3rd Dell 2007FP. One for my server, will be fitted to a drawer in the minirack I've got. The other.... ;)

Rotating screen arcade cab build. :D Play 1942 and Street Fighter 2 correctly.

2 players with 8 buttons each and a trackball with 2 dedicated buttons for that *mouse emulation there* Still tempted by a spinner, just for Tempest, Camel Try and Tac/Scan. Will be adding a lightgun or two at a later date. May start with the wiimote mods to start with. I love Point Blank and Virtua Cop.

Got a couple of Ultrastick 360's and an assortment of buttons squirrelled away. Not chosen the buttons yet so have Happ, Sanwa, IL and a couple of others to play with along with an assortment of microswitches to try. Even has a couple of leaf switchs to try out.

Machine powering it will be a Dell Optiplex 755 with a Q9650, 8gb ram and a Sapphire R7 250 and storage is a 60gb SSD and a 4 bay drobo with 4x2tb drives in it. Excessive, but it's just been retired from main storage, so it's a good use for it.

Hopefully the weather holds out as I need to do some cutting...

always wanted a Saturn, never got one

A few weeks ago I bought a second region modded Sega Mega Drive.

My original one is in the break room at work, along with the Sony Trinitron I can't fit in the space my B&O TV takes up. :(:(

Both of the MD's are model 1's with the High Definition Graphics and Stereo Sound logos on them. I haven't played the new MD at home since I bought it, I just made sure it worked and I then went on holiday for a couple of weeks.

Anyway, I fired it up today and the sound quality is definitely better than my other one. I have it connected to a Yamaha RX V375 AV receiver and I play a lot of MUSHA so I know the music and sound effects very well. I can definitely hear more than I did before, despite them being the same model.

It's almost like it has more channels playing and I can hear sound effects at times when they are normally omitted because there aren't enough channels to play everything else I hear at certain times in the game.

The eBay sellers description made a point of saying it was an early IC BD M5 PAL VA4 model 1, whereas the other one I bought from him didn't have that in the description. Although they both are model 1's with the same logo around the cartridge slot.

Anyone know if there were two board revisions of the PAL model 1 with the stereo logo?

Check out this post on the Sega-16 forum which details pretty much every hardware revision released in all regions so you should be able to work out from there. It sounds like your other one may have been a VA7 revision:

-VA7: Just like the VA7 motherboard revision in the North American Genesis Model 1 and Japanese MegaDrive Model 1, expect hissy, muffled, distorted and generally very poor sound quality.

Thanks.

I checked my MD at work and it seems to be the same model as the one I have at home, it has the EXT port on the back and I don't get the licenced by Sega message before a game loads.

I might open it up and see if the motherboard revision is printed anywhere on the PCB.

I wouldn't have said the sound was hissy, muffled, distorted or of a generally very poor quality. Just the one I recently bought sound a bit better.

Can anyone tell me about the Neo Geo X?

Is it a worthy alternative to the original Neo Geo?

Not sure if anyone uses it but I use JAUCE for importing rare and obscure RC cars and there is a wealth of JDM consoles on there. I have one car waiting to be packed and shipped so considering throwing in a console of some description.

The Neo Geo X looks very pretty, but the built in emulation is abysmal, it's widely regarded as a terrible product to actually play. But for what it's worth it will look good on your shelf

Been looking for an AGS 101 GB SP but all too pricey. Will be going out later so checking the shops. I just want a cheap GB for older Pokemon games, silver, gold, crystal, fire red etc. So many to replay!

Will a Game Boy Advance still be ok? I know the AGS 101 has the better backlight but it's rare.

Edit: Picked an SP, charger and some snowboarding game for £35. Pokemon games are deffo holding their price!

Yeah I've seen a lot from Singaport and Malaysia. Few people I've seen having saving issues and crashing and set places or they cannot trade or whatnot. Lemme know how it goes!

Common issue was it not saving and crashing after you beat the elite four.

I've gone and bought a Saturn. This is the first time I've even seen one let alone play one! It's been region modded with a 50/60hz switch so I have an option for games.

I've not considered one at all before, but when I saw the vid posted earlier in the thread it piqued my interest.
