Retro console and games thread

I got lucky just once and never pushed my luck again. Guy who is an amiga seller on ebay got a md and mcd2 in a bundle with no cables, wanted 40 for it so on the off chance messaged and said due to the risk how about 25....said yes straight away, I guess as he had naff all use for it

Well it arrived and was dusty and dirty but when I stuck the psus in it fired up first time and read a disk perfectly....which was nice :D

nice result, probably worth at least double what you paid for it ?

Well I'm still haven't found a solution to connecting an an emulator capable machine via RGB to a CRT TV.

One of yesterday's parcels was a modded original Xbox, which is capable of RGB video output and fully loaded with everything you need to play retro. I don't think it helped the supposed RGB cable was a pile of doodoo. But once you actually get into a game it just looks like composite video. I will order a proper RGB cable and see if that helps and once I become more familiar with the game settings I might be able to get a better image, but I still don't think I can match the RGB output from the original consoles that are capable of it.

On the upside, it still functions as a normal Xbox and N64 games looked on a par with the best output you can get from a PAL N64.

I'll report back when I've had more time with it.

You can actually get pretty glorious output from VGA on the original Xbox. There were even a couple of 720p games (I think Soul Caliber?)! I think it's up to the application t support, but worth looking into.

That's not the goal.

The goal is be able to play emulators on a CRT TV via RGB SCART. Because once you've played retro consoles, such as the Sega Mega Drive, via RGB on a Sony Trinitron CRT TV. There's no going back.

I've managed S Video from a PC and it's not bad.

From the Xbox via RGB I think the emulator settings need tweaking. Because on my PC on an LCD I can tweak to look to be close to what I'm after. But then I'm playing on an LCD and not a CRT.

When I have the time, I'll have spend some time with the Xbox software and see what I can achieve.

JDM console haul!!

Very happy with them all.

Megadrive is by far the best condition. Looks unused. Neo Geo is mint other than the nob is cracked on the joystick. Sup Fam is a bit grubby but no yellowing. Oddly the Sup Fam comes with 3 fruit machine games (Look a bit like Pachinko). The Neo games smell a bit either musty or burnt which is a mild worry.

What I need now is the correct power supplies and cabling to hook them up to my TV. The consoles are going in the loft and there is a flat screen up there with 2 scarts, S Video and RGB. Was thinking I'd hook the MD and SupFam up using Scart and the Neo as RGB - I'll go to retro cables and ask which ones I'll need.

Anyone know where to get like wall art prints of retro game cover art? Streets or rage etc? Fancy getting a few to line the wall of the room where my systems are set up!

Thanks!

Going back to the Sega Saturn
whats the best to get to play UK games and JAP games?

Shall I buy a modified one with a switch or one with one of these Action Replay (or other cards with the PLUS) ?
is there any difference ? id rather not buy a hard modified one, id like to keep it in its original state

thanks

Cart if you don't want to mod it then. Though that does mean you won't get the benefit of being able to run games in 60Hz mode and it also means that you won't be able to play games requiring a RAM cart.

Put simply, if you want to play import games the way they're meant to be played (ie. at 60Hz) you're going to have to hard mod it or get one that's pre modded.

I've just finished modding the Saturn I got yesterday with the switchless PIC mod which means there's no external modifications and I can toggle between EU/JP/US regions with 50/60Hz just by using the reset button. That's the best way if you just wanted to keep it stock looking.

Looks a lot worse than it really is, just quite a few wires :) Obviously this is just for region and 50/60Hz stuff, nothing illegal about it and it doesn't facilitate playing pirated copies.

That AR cart with the connector on top is for a parallel port connection to a PC if I remember rightly. Can't remember exactly what the purpose is.

However, I just remembered that some of the AR carts do have integrated RAM carts too so that will give you the RAM cart and the ability to play games from another region.

Just means the only issue is the 50/60Hz thing.

Pretty sure the mk2 is much easier to mod. The 2 pads at the rear hatch (vcd door) are all I had to solder up to to get my machine running 60hz via a switch on the rear door plate and then just bought the 4mb action replay cartridge for full screen / ntsc joy

It's just an attempt to absolve himself of any liability, however it won't work because he should have listed it as for parts or not working.

I would say that one is worth a punt if it doesn't go too high.

There are a few games that use a ROM cart that will require a fast swap if going down the AR cart route.
