Retro console and games thread

It's a PC game, but I've just picked up Half-Life Generations GOTY edition (so includes Opposing Force, Blue Shift and Counter Strike) from Cash Converters for 99p

I've just checked the key and it hadn't been registered on Steam, which was nice

SNES (less yellow than it is in the photo)

Super Mario All Stars inc. Box but no manual
Lemmings
Putty

I will give it a good clean as a toddler used it last

Get some Retr0bright on that SNES to remove the yellow ****. I'll be doing same with my Dreamcast once I round up the ingredients.

It does work, and although it does not usually restore the colour back to original, it lightens the general colour and takes out the yellow. If your gear has different shades of yellowing at different parts, you will have to adjust the exposure time and/or strength at each part so that the final result is even throughout.

I did a US SNES and an Acorn BBC Master computer a couple of years ago. The BBC Master turned out really well, probably very close to original. The US SNES turned out pretty good, although certainly not back to the original grey colour; more light a lighter dirty-white kinda colour. Better than yellow though.

If I remember correctly, I used a mixture of peroxide and one of those oxy stain remover products. The oxy was bought in a supermarket (common as muck) and the peroxide was something like a 12% hair dye product. Mix to get a paste consistency, paint it on with a paintbrush and leave in the garden under the UVAB rays of the sun.

is it worth me picking up a dreamcast?? I've never played one but would quite like to have a go at retro gaming and like the idea of shenmue and jet set radio. Are there many quintessential games to be played on it?

Is there anything i should look out for when buying one?

I'm choosing dreamcast because my mates got a gamecube, i had a n64 and don't really fancy going back any further generations.

really nice unit but i would personally prefer a back to it to hide some of the mess of wires that in inevitable with all those consoles, but thats coming from someone who had all the retro consoles and never touched them so sold them on now regret it and keep looking for a new collection so i wouldnt worry about what i say

Definitely, the unit only went in yesterday so I'm still in the process of setting it all up. I'm waiting on a couple of AV cables as some only came with RF. I'll probably sick a hardwood back on it to hide the wiring and use scart multi taps to keep them all connected. The few consoles that only use RF will just have to be moved near the TV to use them.

just had a look through myphotobucket and i cant seem to find any photos

i sold them as they just wasn't being used due to lack of free time, i had them all set up in a MAME arcade cabinet i built and when we moved home a few months ago, due to a new job, we moved into a smaller house so that was one of the first things to go.

i will start a new collection but ill wait until i see some good bargains at car boots next time as i got most of the last collection off ebay and the price for retro gaming on ebay seems to be going up all the time.

If anything it should've looked better on the CRT as it can run at the native resolution rather than using the LCD scaling. That being said I wouldn't use composite myself anyway on an LCD. I'm sure the HDMI output is much sharper. Still wondering about the audio emulation though.
