Retro console and games thread

^^^ Nice find. My local game shop has now closed down, which is a real shame, not only because it was a great game shop and had good prices but it was one of the few independent stores left in Clevedon, the town centre is mostly cheap stores, charity shops and take aways now. The only silver lining is that now maybe the charity shops will get some games in as there is nowhere to trade them instead.

I popped to Insane Game Bridgewater this morning, really good range at the moment, they even have a GB Micro which you almost never see in store.

Is there any interest in starting something like a Google Docs as database for retro game shops, regular markets ect? Could be divided by area then town/city with contact details, webpage, Facebook page with a small comment on quality and prices.

Ah man thats a shame. :( Hopefully we won't see the disappearance of their other stores.

Only recent retro purchase I have made whilst we are waitign to move to our new house (damn mortgage companies holding everything up like usual) is Goldeneye007 boxed on the N64. I don't even have an N64 (yet) but I saw it calling out to me and had to have it. Also picked up Starship Troopers for £1 and mavity rush on the Vita.

we have an 86in screen in at work, so nipped up to the test room at lunch as i found it had a scart socket lol

Thinking about grabbing a new piece of hardware but not sure which one to go for. Mostly I've gone for stuff I had previous experience with growing up but fancy trying something I missed out on or something a bit more rare.

So my short list is; Panasonic 3DO, Philips CDi or the SuperGrafx. They all come with a selection of games but the SuperGrafx would be coming from Japan so there is a risk of being stung with custom fees.

These are the ones I'm looking at

CDi

3DO

SuperGrafx

Which would go for?

So saturn 60hz switch mod all went to plan.....massive! Improvement. Appears jap games dont like 50hz much so worth 20 min job :)

I didn't look at the prices, but it has to be a SuperGrafx, I'm hoping to pick one up myself soon.. import games are quite cheap if you get them on mass as its seems to be p&p thats costly.. :)

It's free delivery but doesn't come with cables. I need to find out if it will take the same AC adaptor and AV cable as the TurboGrafx.

Edit. Now spotter a twin Famicom from within the UK. I can't decide!

got some more snes games i won at the weekend on ebay, this is the ebay pic lol cant be bothered to take my own :P paid £25 for the 12 and £5 posted wasn't the cheapest but still a good price i think. Most are cart only but i did get manuals for smash tennis ,zoop, nba jam, clay fighters, theme park

The uk saturn pal is 50hz which is slower in every aspect. If u run a jap game the sound is right n gfx lag behind as they all do 60hz so to run them right u need the mod

Also means no dirty PAL black borders lol

Ah that sounds like the PAL UK Vs NTSC/PAL JP SNES issue.
Except you couldn't play JP games on a PAL UK SNES.

Interesting! But wouldn't it been easier to use a US Saturn? Or a Japanese one?

Seriously the jumper pads are right next to the cmos battery at the rear. 2 little bits of wire and switch I found on old printer in parts bin at work.....20 mins soldering and u have a free 60hz saturn.

That X-Men game looks pretty good. Can't remember if I ever played it back in the day.

This arrived today. Got a few carts coming and Metroid in disk format. Be interesting to see if there are improvements on the disk version due to the larger capacity.

I thought the purpose of the disks was that they stored less than the carts but was cheaper to produce. It suffered as they was easy to copy, so it wasn't release any where else. It's the same disk type of them amstrad pcs that I had in secondary school, we wasn't allow to touch them and had to use the acorns lol.. Good luck in getting those types of disks now,

I think the jap famicom had fm sound. :)

The disks are the same size as a 3.5" but with a slightly different design and were made so they could be over written. Game shops in Japan would have a station where you could insert the disk and change the game for a smaller fee than buying it new.
