Hi all,

I'm massively looking forward to VR and have pre-ordered the first Oculus wave shipping the end of March. However, I've recently seen that Frontier may not support CV1 for Elite - the main reason I'm excited about VR and has got me looking at the Vive which Frontier have buddied up with.

Vive:
I predominately play steam games so thats a plus for the Vive, and its supposed to have a slightly larger vertical FOV.... The little camera seems cool and the ability to walk around the room might be fun if there is a cable management solution and I can happily make the space.

Oculus:
The main thing going for the Oculus is I get the "feel" that its is more refined, polished and has had more industrial design put into it. I don't mind waiting for the touch and I get the impression it will be better than Vive's version.

Cost isn't a big issue, I'm after a quality product at the end of the day. Will oculus play well with steam vr??

I've tried out both (Rift DK2 and Vive CES version) and honestly, I will wait for the consumer version of the Vive to see if it improves on a few things- screendoor effect, and controllers to be more specific. If it does, I will easily recommend it over the Rift as a 1st gen VR product.

I don't think the Vive is going to be in the same price range though :(

Hey, thanks for your reply. A lot of people seem to be favoring the Vive tbh. The huge one for me it running E.D off the bat, it makes me think what other games won't be completely or at all compatible with steam vr.....

I read an article recently, can't remember where though, that said the vive experience was better than oculus and felt a lot more natural, but as it has more hardware the cost will probably be more. Oculus have facebook cash behind it so marketing alone could give that the win. I'm in two minds at the moment and will need to see both compared really.

Having spent all afternoon on google, it appears the two are pretty much the same, there differences are tit for tatt.

The biggie for me is if there will be any exclusivity, which one will end up on top. I'm scared of getting into bed with the wrong one. I saw a tweet from David Braben posted last week alleviating fears that there is no exclusivity deal with Vive, but I love the fact that steam are driving Vive, with the option of sub-contracting different manufactures.

Still don't know...... first world problems!

That's interesting, thanks. In fairness, he didn't try the Rift Touch controllers for comparison, but the general feel is Vive might be the one to go for, almost every PC based forum is advocating the Vive... I'm still keeping my options open, I'll probably pre-order the Vive as well and make a decision a week or so later!

The Vive should be the superior experience, but it all comes down to pricing. Almost everyone was surprised at the cost of the CV1 Rift when it went into pre-order, and the Vive is speculated to be several magnitudes more expensive than the Rift.

I'm guessing a £1k price tag for the launch pack for Vive, which puts it out of my budget range

I highly doubt (or at least hope) it'll be that expensive.

If nothing else, HTC/Valve now have a benchmark in the $599 for the Rift. No matter how much better it may be, they can't sell it for hugely more than the Rift or they won't get a good enough install base.

I'd have thought the maximum they can sell it for is £700, maybe even less.

It would be nice, but not sure if feasible, if the vive was sold separately so the display and the controller and sensors could be added at a later time

I'm expecting around the £700 - £1000 mark myself. Nice things cost money I guess. I don't mind forking out on that as long as it doesn't goe the way of betamax.

It seems most PC enthusiasts are favoring the Vive tbh

Rift for me. It seems to be the most well put together and I cant say I'm fussed on having the controllers as I want it for sim games... These "roomscale" games being touted seem little more than demos, particularly if the Vive ends up being more expensive.

The Vive has considerably more tech than the Rift though. It has four lighthouse cameras and the two touch controllers, before you even consider the differences in tech for the headset itself.

Rift announced that they were selling at cost. I cannot see HTC being able to offer the same thing, they are already in trouble financially.

Yes but Valve can bankroll them... they are literally drowning in money. Have you seen their HQ? They have a massive vault room ten stories high like Scrooge McDuck full of cash that their employees go swimming in every day.

The headsets themselves are VERY similar, specs wise.

And lasers are very cheap these days too. The lightboxes are nothing special/expensive. It's the combination of reflection points on the headset/controllers plus software that makes it special.

So unless the controllers cost £100+ I expect the Vive to not be much more than the Rift.

How the Vive price has been released - its going be be a good £150 - £200 more that Oculus. Whats everyone doing?
