531 frame is dying for a respray but I can't afford it : /

I've got a Reynolds that I've been wanting to convert to a ss for a long while now, as its just for bombing into town. It needs some tlc, this might just inspire me to get on with it. Angle grinder with a steel wire brush, then paint it sometime.

Most towns have a firm offering powder coating. They'd strip the frame for you as well.

Stripping a frame is a pain in the ass. I'll avoid doing it again. A knot wheel in a grinder will make a real mess of a 531 frame as well. It'll leave scores all over it and probably tear into the lugs which will be softer metal. Nitromores, a wire brush and some thick rubber gloves is pretty much the only way at home.

Love Reynolds stuff :) always looks gorgeous! That frame definitely needs some TLC, be awesome when restored!

Thanks:)

That's lovely, guessing you aren't a short bloke though!

Aye a little over 6ft.

I intend to take it to bob jackson cycles for a new enamel coat, looking at at least £100 though as I don't have the tools to remove the headset but I do for everything else (don't want to risk the screw driver and hammer method). And that's before i'm bothered about transfers (got to know it's 531:p). Not sure what they would do with the raleigh badge on the headtube either.

I did use a wire brush on the chain stays and on the previously chromed part of the forks and sprayed them with clear lacquer but it chips off pretty easily.

Good news.

I was supposed to be doing the Dragon with a mate, but he got knocked off; bike wrecked and him injured. He couldn't cycle and he couldn't afford a new bike until the insurance came though.

I thought I was doing the ride on my own, but he's now fit and someone has leant him a lovely van Nicholas Mistral that he's agreed to buy once the insurance comes though. Woot, I'm not going to be slogging up Welsh mountains on my own.

Very nice :)

Tell him to be ******' careful with that Mistral! ;)

About 100 spokes landed on my doorstep this morning. I be wheelbuilding this weekend :)

Stainless double butted from Cyclebasket. Should look really nice with the rims polished back up :)

Just bought a new bike yesterday, ready assembled from halfords.

Was shocked to find that the third gear on left doesn't work, gave me a right scare on a main road :s

Taking it back to the store on Monday to get it fixed, they should do so for free right?

Yes.

What do you mean by 'didn't work'? And when you say 'on the left' I assume you mean the left hand shifter controlling the front gearing?

Halfords aren't the best for spannering (roughtly on a par with me)...
