Cheers, I'll take a look through those!

Please do post a kit list, will be very useful when I start packing for the summer tours!

Edit: I like the look of your 2011 tour, good luck with it! Out of interest, what sort of speed/mileage do you average? I'm hoping to put in 70-80 miles daily on my tour, but I'm worried that is a bit too ambitious... it's more of a question of endurance I think. Long summer days will mean that I can cycle until 9 or 10pm if I wanted to and it would still be light.

We plan for a leisurely 10 - 12 mph. When you add in a break every 15 or so miles, plenty of photo stops and a good pub lunch then it's easy to take a full day to cycle 60 or 70 miles, usually finishing around 5 or 6 in the evening (to leave enough time to prep for the next day, and more importantly, find a decent pub for food and a beer). Conversely there are days where no matter how slow you think you cycle, your finished by 2pm.

I have to say that mid 60 miles is our sweet spot for a relaxing day. We vary the mileage depending on the terrain. This year is a little weird in as much as we start with a long day but then have a relatively short and flat day to recover. Of course, all the planning in the world can't help you if you are faced with a stiff breeze ;)

I'd agree with TreeTops, touring you want to have time to stop and smell the roses so to speak. Forcing a high mileage schedule on yourself every day may ruin some of that ability.

Theres another thing you can't always control - mechanical failure. After cycling nearly a full day last year through the highlands with a broken pedal (no bearings), it certainly slows you down. Follow that with cycling the final 70 miles to Edinburgh with a bottom bracket that pedalled in an oval shape rather than a circle and your glad that you didn't add another 10 or 20 miles to the day :)

I really wish I was that brave! I am a very nervous descender if I don't know the road :(

Group of us going down a steep decline on Sunday didn't realise there was a junction at the bottom. I stopped in time after hearing the shouts, but a few shot out and were lucky there was nothing coming.

I took the hills easy after that.

I went out yesterday for a couple of hours with some of the NCT Dads. Since I've had a shorter stem put on the SuperSix, I feel as though I am going to go over the bars on a sharp descent. Amazing what a difference a few centimetres can make to your perception!

That's scary mate. Glad to hear nothing bad happened. Looks like a good day otherwise!

I'm getting disillusioned with cycling at the moment. It's predominantly for keeping fit and triathlons and I just can't seem to get any quicker. I do speed work on the daily commute and it doesn't seem to help. I don't think Cambridge helps for training either. I hit a hill and my legs start to cry after a few revolutions.

I guess it's time to start doing hill repeats? :P

I've not been back even two weeks and I'm missing the Staffordshire/Peak District hills - there's nothing here! I haven't been able to cycle since Saturday though as I'm on the final sprint with my dissertation.

This is the route I've been doing since I came back: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=U...821707968317225632.0004a20f3c390f7eedfd7&z=12
Wow thats very similar to my commuting route (minus the loop out to Drayton)! You're at university here right? Do you cycle with anyone else?

I'm in my final year at university here. I went on a few CUCC training rides last term but I'm not too keen on chaingang riding, which seemed to be all they did, so I mostly cycle on my own. Where does your commute start and finish?

Platypus, I've only been doing short rides at the moment on my own and the only hills i've managed to find around cambridge so far are in this ride:

Need more hills :(
Hmm for some odd reason I can't see your route. You're right about the wind though! Any chance you could create a google maps route? I'd be interested to see it :).
