Road Cycling Essentials

Platypus, I've only been doing short rides at the moment on my own and the only hills i've managed to find around cambridge so far are in this ride:

Need more hills :(
I know Long Road is a bit hilly (though I normally get to it after having done 45+ miles so my judgement may be impaired). Would you say its the biggest hill on that route or are there better bits?

This is my Saturday ride. She trains it to work with the bike, and I cycle up to pick the commander in chief up from work (she is an optician and works Saturday mornings) and we ride back, she doesn't like A roads so we have to go a convoluted route back (having said that even I draw the line at cycling on the A10 - though the A142 is fine). Bear in mind this is after a 2 hour swim for me :p.

Other than the few short and sweet ones on the route I linked, I don't think we're going to get much better without having to drive somewhere, but if I'm wrong feel free to correct me as I could really use some more hills to ride! Platypus/Mr Brightside, have you ever ridden with Cambridge Cycling Club? Thinking of giving them a try this weekend.

Sounds good. I'm hoping to head down this sunday all being well so will probably see you there. I'm looking forward to having someone to draft off for a change!

There are hills in Cambridge, coming out of Cherry Hinton over the top towards the Shelfords is pretty steep, and are a few nice hills around there, the gogmagogs.

I ride fixed 48-18 so going up is ok, spinning like mentalist on the way down is where I have the issue!

There is a Cambridge fixedgear and ss ride on Thursdays, with the odd geared ride on occasion. Quite a few cycling groups around infact.

Just started using endomondo, seems pretty good, calls out you last mile time which is a nice feature. One of my rides. not fast at all, spent most of it chatting.

I'm getting disillusioned with cycling at the moment. It's predominantly for keeping fit and triathlons and I just can't seem to get any quicker. I do speed work on the daily commute and it doesn't seem to help. I don't think Cambridge helps for training either. I hit a hill and my legs start to cry after a few revolutions.

I know what I am about to say is purely psychological but, when I am running or cycling, and I hit a hill and I get that familiar feeling that my legs are getting tired I visualise the tiredness/pain in my upper leg and mentally push it down to my lower legs and out through my feet and into either the ground (if running) or into my pedals (if cycling).

Some people will laugh at this "mumbo jumbo" but a lot of tiredness IS psychological and, IMHO, you use anything that works and this works for me. It may work for you.

^mine was only 22!

Think you mean the Mr Brightside's obital route, which does indeed look good, I have done all of the parts, just not in one go, will have to do that one weekend for sure!

I prefer the Jens Voigt method - "Shut up legs!" :)
