I fell off last winter so this year I'm sticking to the turbo!

I'm much fitter this year and want to keep going as much as possible.

Me too, i'm going to avoid the icy roads as much as possible. Turbo and mtb/cyclocross for me. It's quite funny how the MTBers turn to road bikes during the winter to keep clean and the roadies turn to MTBs to keep away from the ice.

I'll probably do some running and swimming as well to keep the fitness up.

Cyclocross with studded ice tyres in the winter, that's how I roll.

This morning I've fixed a puncture, changed the chain rings on the CX and the read mech and sorted the front shifting. Rear still needs indexing.

Can you tell I'm working my notice and working from home?

I'm going to sort the Scott over lunch time (new chain / cassette and move front mech after swapping out Q rings) and maybe fix the puncture on the Brompton.

There is a reason why the turbo room is usually known as the dungeon.

It's a hateful device of torture.

Mine will be in my downstairs garage, hook it up with a telly and fan in front to simulate sights, sound and wind? haha!

ill be commuting all over winter this year too, i know the risks and had 2 offs last year but then again i was commuting on 23c slicks and rode through snow, ice etc.. :o scary to think of really.

thats why i want a CX to stick some better rubber on it during the winter months + full mudguard set and be done with it for that season..

my current bike is all nice and i love it tbh for what it is but having 1.5mm between tyre and fork makes fitting mudguards a nightmare.

Another option is the Sensa Fermo from Merlin.

That looks great!
It's like a proper cx race bike though, not really what grudas needs. A touring/trekking sort of bike with mudguard mounts would probably suit him better.

edit: trying to figure out if there is a name for the commuter-oritented cx bikes? The 'cyclocross' category seems to cover everything. Mudguards are not allowed for CX racing so a lot of race-focused bikes wont have mounts. Just check carefully when you're buying one.

:D My turbo is getting relocated to the conservatory this winter, since it's too cold to use at that time of year anyway. Means I have some natural light and can open the door for fresh air!

Worth saying a big fan is a must for turbo riding though, the lack of windchill makes a huge difference to your rate of perceived exertion (i.e. you think you're working harder than you are).

I'll be commuting through the winter, and riding as much as possible, but what I usually do is use the gym over winter so I can spin and do some weights whilst perving at the women in lycra, then have a cooldown swim after. Just cba with a turbo.

I forgot that he doesn't want to get his jeans dirty. ;)

It's a great bike though. If they came down to below £1,000 for the Ultegra option then they would have a killer commuter on their hands.

A lot of race bikes come with the right mounts though; My CX9 Optimo comes with an Easton EC90X fork and both frame and fork have guard mounts (apart from the chainstay bridge, weirdly, but a p-clip will fix that).
