Road Cycling Essentials

Just had a job interview this afternoon.

If I get the job do I reward myself with a cycling purchase despite being skint?:D

just a driver having a moan because you dared ride where your supposed to. so many drivers think bikes should be in the gutter and only in the gutter.

Treat yourself to some Shimano for all the bikes :D

Ha, I'll admit I've not actually tried Shimano properly apart from a short ride down the street on a BMC with Tiagra. I didn't like pushing the entire brake lever to shift! How does DA9000 work?

Have you tried Campag at Chorus/Record/SR level to compare to DA9000?

DA9000 is Record level. No one uses SR as its far too expensive and brittle.

Shimano is, in my opinion, better made and easier to use, but Campag kit is completely serviceable and repairable (even if spares do take a while).

Besides, you know you should all move to SRAM.

Works the same except it's ridiculously smooth and requires no effort. Shifting up at the front feels like there's a little man lifting the chain for you. I love it :D

My first road bike had Sora and those Campag style thumb shifters except they were ridiculously difficult to access from the drops. Probably Shimano's intention as it put me off thumb shifters & campy entirely. I test rode an Enigma Ti with Record. And I basically had visions of Sora. Couldn't wait to hand the bike back.

Well, if we ever do an OcUK cycling meet you will have to let me have a go :)

Btw, me and oli are heading into Surrey on Saturday if you are around Asprilla? 7.30am at Richmond Gate

Has Strava gone nuts with altitude data? It reckons this segment is a Cat 4 - 28.6% average gradient?!

WTF? It's almost pancake flat (Google SV)

yeah... i had 2 last weekend.. both segments were cat 4 but i can't even remember climbing hard.. tbh i can't even remember any hills around that part where the segments are! :/

Stayed with the fast group on tonights chaingang. Happy with 36 miles at 20mph.

Good work. :D

Enjoyed my run with the club last night too, it was sort of an intermediate ride to get people accustomed to group riding with some faster sections on the run back. Pretty happy with where my level is compared to the quicker guys but need to develop my group skills and I previously considered myself a decent descender but I'm way behind those guys. I'm really pretty nervous on the really steep stuff compared to them.

Thinking I'll have a bash at the Club 10 and Hill Climb next Monday and Wednesday. :)

Yes One More Solo. You'll love the 10 and hill climb.

I hate descending in a group, don't like the idea of crashing into someone else at 30mph+

I think that's the thing, I'd only ridden the roads we were on once before and the surface and visibility wasn't great. I was worried about the people in front of me braking suddenly AND the people behind me going up my backside. Ended up holding on for dear life. :p

Basically describes every hill on every group ride I've ever done. The main descent on the chaingang route sounds similar, quite a lot of tree cover so its quite dark and there's a few potholes. I like to give myself enough room to see.
