I use a power2max on my race bike. For number crunching I use training peaks wko+ and strava premium. There's a free one called golden cheetah which is meant to be pretty good now. Training with power was possibly the best cycling decision I made.

You should also got a copy of Coogans 'racing and training with a power meter' book.

Ah cool, I'm already using strava premium so will carry on using that, but may look into golden cheetah. Yeah a few different people have recommended the book so will definetly invest.

What sort of workouts do you generally do?

This time of year i'm focusing exclusively on L5 and L6 (anaerobic and neuromuscular) zones, so most of my rides are around 1-2 hours of interval training where I absolutely thrash myself. I race crits at Cyclopark and Hillingdon E12 mostly.

Looks like you're training for Ironman so you'll be doing more long steady rides. The power meter will be a godsend for pacing yourself (in the cycling bit at least).

Yeah that's exactly right. I've been riding to heart rate for the past year, which has worked well, but there's so much variability in heart rate I got a bit fed up using it.

Is there actually time in a crit to be looking at a power meter? Just curious.

Treated myself to a new helmet today - Catlike Whisper Plus. :)

After a month or so of riding a 3 year old carrera vulcan with road style tyres that I picked up off ebay, I got myself a new 2014 specialized allez sport today from the bike shop down the road. Paid for it and went back a couple of hours later to pick it up and they chucked in a couple of water bottles and holders. No where near as good as most the bikes in this thread but I love it :D

Put my Chinese carbon wheels on I think they look great on the bike.

The Allez is a very good first bike.

Swapped out...
2300 to 105 groupset and ultegra brakes.
Standard Alex rims to Fulcrum racing 7's and 404's for racing.
Carbon seatpost and some selle italia seat.

That thing at the back of the seat is a 'ass saver', which works really well!

Going to stop off at planet-x this week for a carbon stem and handlebars. Comes in at 8.5kg.

Looks very nice. I wouldn't bother upgrading the stem to a carbon one as alu is usually stiffer, lighter and cheaper. I also wouldn't be racing on carbon bars - if you crash it's very hard to tell whether they are damaged and they're one of the last things you want to fail unexpectedly on a bike, especially in a race.

Save the money for a new frame and transfer everything over.
