mmmm let me think how many times in the last 15 years i have ever referred anyone to a podiatrist after an acute injury?

never.

don't waste your £

a good physio is better than any painkillers. 'fragments in the ligaments' after injury is due to an avulsion # at the time of injury and sod all to do with recovery period

My GP referred me to a physio a few months ago and the physio immediately referred me to the podiatrist. Didn't have to pay a thing. The factor of recovery period is what the podiatrist told me. You may be correct but I don't see what the reason for the podiatrist telling me porkies would be; perhaps he meant method of recovery as well as recovery period.

Well I haven't been referred to anyone. The wait for my physio referral was 20 weeks, so yep, I'd still be waiting if I hadn't payed myself. I doubt a private physio can refer to a podiatrist.

If you're small or tall and don't need average-sized frame, you still might be able to find some bargains on last year's models....

Ahh, now I'm aching! The Exmoor Beast has taken its toll on me :p.

The day started when my alarm went off at 5am. We then drove to Minehead for registration and a prompt 7am start (I was in the first ~100 riders to be let off). Thank god that the clocks went back that night is all I can say.

The weather for 90% of the day was horrendous. It was raining or drizzling pretty much the whole time and the mist on the top of the hills was pretty bad. It had obviously come straight off the sea too as you could taste the salt as you rid through it. Some pretty serious front and side winds and the whole thing was pretty bleak.

I did my back in somehow over the first section and was tempted to pull out at the first feed station, but a good stretch and a bit of upright riding for the next few miles sorted it out.

The hill climbs are mental. I did little to no training beforehand which didn't help but I was totally unprepared bike-wise too. I'm not a gear aficionado but I really need some lower gears if I do it again; I was overtaking people in my lowest gear with about half the cadence they had, and it was just impossible to cycle up some sections. My low cadence combined with the wet weather and slick tyres meant that half the time I think my tyres were just spinning without actually going anyway. The equivalent of revving up to 5000rpm in 1st when driving in snow.

The descents were also pretty **** scary. At one point we were all going along at about 35-40mph on a flat and then a descent and sharp corner just came out of nowhere. Nobody saw it due to the mist and there were half a dozen people dotted about along the descent and at the bottom who'd come off. One guy was being attended to on the floor who looked in pretty bad shape. My back end came out when I was slamming on the brakes but fortunately I kept it upright and was fine.

I also completely drained myself of energy in between the two feed stations. I was getting pretty bad that I couldn't even peddle downhill and was feeling pretty faint. Ate and drank a shed load at the second feed station and that was more than enough to carry on with the remainder.

Anyway, I completed it. I didn't really have a time in mind, just completion. In the end I did it in 6hr 10m which I'm personally happy with given no training and completely the wrong gearing (I walked most sharp inclines - and when I say sharp, I don't mean sharp and short, I mean sharp and 2 miles long :p). I also spent about a total of 25 minutes at the two feed stations recovering and getting sympathy from the girlfriend.

Again? Probably... I do have a time to beat now :p. Really enjoyed the whole sportive atmosphere generally so will definitely be doing a few flatter ones next summer.

I'm looking to replace my crappy old mountain bike that I use as a general run-around with an (inexpensive) road bike, mainly for the drop bars. It'd be used for travelling up to about 10 miles each day.

I don't mind second hand but haven't been able to find a lot, I'm looking at spending up to an absolute maximum of about £450-500. I think I've missed the boat a bit with 2011 clearances, has anyone got any suggestions please?

There are some hills around Minehead that cars struggle to go up, looks like you missed the worst one though, Porlock Hill :D

I might have to borrow that route next time I'm there.

Is there anyway to download a gpx from endo??

something like
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=59250
they have an extra 10% off their website atm so makes it £499 or so?
not sure you'll see anything better for the price. others in that bracket will have sora or 2300 shifters.

Good spot. I have http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-gb/bikes/model/defy.3/7842/45448/ at the moment in size L, do you reckon the 55cm is the best match for me on there, I'm finding it difficult to compare the geometries.

Thanks :)

Whats wrong with the giant?
That BeOne has a great spec for the price, but its still not going to be a massive upgrade from the Defy.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the Giant, I really like it, but I want to have a weekend bike and one I can use for uni every day and not mind if it gets scratched up a bit while locked up. Not really looking for an upgrade at all, just that there's no chance of me taking the Defy to uni unless I put the stock wheels and stuff back on it and that'd be hassle every weekend. I don't necessarily need anything as good as a Tiagra spec'd bike but for the price that doesn't look bad.
