Ahh, now I'm aching! The Exmoor Beast has taken its toll on me

.
The day started when my alarm went off at 5am. We then drove to Minehead for registration and a prompt 7am start (I was in the first ~100 riders to be let off). Thank god that the clocks went back that night is all I can say.
The weather for 90% of the day was horrendous. It was raining or drizzling pretty much the whole time and the mist on the top of the hills was pretty bad. It had obviously come straight off the sea too as you could taste the salt as you rid through it. Some pretty serious front and side winds and the whole thing was pretty bleak.
I did my back in somehow over the first section and was tempted to pull out at the first feed station, but a good stretch and a bit of upright riding for the next few miles sorted it out.
The hill climbs are mental. I did little to no training beforehand which didn't help but I was totally unprepared bike-wise too. I'm not a gear aficionado but I really need some lower gears if I do it again; I was overtaking people in my lowest gear with about half the cadence they had, and it was just impossible to cycle up some sections. My low cadence combined with the wet weather and slick tyres meant that half the time I think my tyres were just spinning without actually going anyway. The equivalent of revving up to 5000rpm in 1st when driving in snow.
The descents were also pretty **** scary. At one point we were all going along at about 35-40mph on a flat and then a descent and sharp corner just came out of nowhere. Nobody saw it due to the mist and there were half a dozen people dotted about along the descent and at the bottom who'd come off. One guy was being attended to on the floor who looked in pretty bad shape. My back end came out when I was slamming on the brakes but fortunately I kept it upright and was fine.
I also completely drained myself of energy in between the two feed stations. I was getting pretty bad that I couldn't even peddle downhill and was feeling pretty faint. Ate and drank a shed load at the second feed station and that was more than enough to carry on with the remainder.
Anyway, I completed it. I didn't really have a time in mind, just completion. In the end I did it in 6hr 10m which I'm personally happy with given no training and completely the wrong gearing (I walked most sharp inclines - and when I say sharp, I don't mean sharp and short, I mean sharp and 2 miles long

). I also spent about a total of 25 minutes at the two feed stations recovering and getting sympathy from the girlfriend.
Again? Probably... I do have a time to beat now

. Really enjoyed the whole sportive atmosphere generally so will definitely be doing a few flatter ones next summer.
