22 miles this morning. 16mph average, so not as quick as I'd like for a flat ride like that. I found out why when I got home - I'd got my cycling socks on the wrong feet. 10W lost right there. Definitely nothing to do with the wind or being woefully out of condition after winter.

You can't judge fitness gains/losses by average speed - there are too many variables.

so tyre tyres tyyyyres...

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/continental-grand-prix-4000s-ii-folding-road-tyre/

or

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/schwalbe-one-folding-road-tyre/ - good reviews and apparently very grippy..

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/vredestein-fortezza-senso-xtreme-weather-clincher-road-tyre/ - good reviews too.. wonder if my bike will fit 28c's tho! normally stick to 25c..

or pro4's ?

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/michelin-pro4-endurance-folding-road-tyre/

cheapest but should do no?

I commute only these days in this weather so I need go all around grip and puncture protection, max 28c(not even sure if my frame will fit it tho)

current set is vittoria rubino pro which did the job, but rear is getting very skittish now!

winter tyres? get the michilins
all round tyres ? get the continentals GPs (which I use)

Trying so sync my Edge 500 from this afternoons ride and I just keep getting a 'failed' message from Garmin Express with an 'Unknown Error'.

A quick check and the site isn't down and is reachable...

Tried the usual on/off etc. About to reboot whilst I jump in the shower.

Does this happen from time to time with Garmin? is it quite temperamental? I've only synced one other ride so far but didn't have any problems.

Edit: USB port of all things....

I gave up with Garmin Express after a while. Always giving me errors with my Garmin 705. Funnily enough even when it displayed an error message the rides had usually been uploaded to Garmin Connect.

Jealous of you Solid!

Are there any roads to avoid in majorca? Looks like i'll be saying just west of Palma in a place called Son Vida. So i'll be riding on the west side of the island.

Didn't really go down there but all the roads even the little ones are as good as an average UK Road but without the gravel and potholes

Wicked.
Whats the traffic like in general? (am I ok to use all roads that arnt 'Ma 13/19/20' roads)
drivers behave themselves?.....other cyclists behave themselves?!

Drivers are very good. Most will beep their horn when they are going to pass you, it's a bit odd because that's not what we're used to over here but it's just a courtesy thing for them to let you know they are coming past.

I'm sure that somebody on here posted about their cycling holiday in the southwest? I'v never been that far south.

Just got in from cleaning my bike. The freehub sounds a lot worse than i remember. I love this bike but after coming off on christmas i find myself more hesitant to trust a 30 year old bike when i'm not even that confident about my mechanical abilities half the time...

Did a 'night' ride today to test a new light (Cateye Rapid X RC front - not too impressed due to the mounting, the light itself is amazing), new bibs (okay but should've worn thermals), new jacket (DHB EQ2.5 high viz to replace my black Commuter - very impressed!) And Garmin 810 (Onto that in a mo)...

Did a local industrial estate 'bypass' which is very quiet, felt strong so did it twice! Second time and returning home I was practicing standing as I don't do it much... really struggle to control my cadence, I find when standing I push cadence up and start hammering away & find it really hard to keep it low (80/90 cadence) and consistant/smooth. Any tips? I can control it much more on the turbo! :o

Now onto the 810... First a quicky, how the hell do I stop it changing the screen every few seconds? Can't find the option to turn that off!

It doesn't want to pair/work with my Wahoo TICKR (BTLE & Ant+). :(

I setup Garminconnect on my S5 and the 810 has paired with it, but the app never seems to finish a sync with the 810 and the upload from the ride on the 810 eventually fails if I try to upload it? Can't see any other way to get the ride from the 810 without plugging it in? Maybe i'm expecting too much of the Android app as I do see lots of people complaining to Garmin about it!

So for the time being i'll be recording on my phone still While I figure out the 810 and if I want to keep it... I'm disappointed with it so far but it is early days... :/

How many gears does it have?
If it's 30 years old, I'm pretty sure it wont have a "freehub". Modern bikes have the ratchet built into the hub and a replaceable cassette fits on top (called a "freehub").
Older bikes have the ratchet mechanism built into the cassette and the whole unit screws onto the hub (usually called a "freewheel" i think).

Good news is that it'll be super cheap to replace the ratchet+cassette together (<£10).
Bad news is that the old one will be screwed on so tight that you'll probably never get it off :p

Yeah, the wheels i took off a modern bike. Only that bike was in a crash, and i'm pretty sure one of the cups got bent. Serviced them when i first put them on, then again when it started to make noise after only about a dozen rides to find that all the bearings on the drive side had rusted to hell. Replaced them and reset the bearing preload properly, even though that was probably a temporary measure. But once i'd done that it started making even more noise, a very unhealthy sounding rattle when freewheeling - hence why i suspect it's the freehub.

Long story short, new wheels needed really, and given everything else i was going to buy for this bike i'm getting pretty close to "new bike budget" anyway. Might opt for that if i can justify it and put this frame on the backburner to make a proper tourer out of some day...

Not that I know of. Most roads are like glass in comparison to over here. I'll be over the west side of the island this year too.

Okay I got my ride from the 810 onto Garminconnect on my mobile but that doesn't seem to sync with Strava etc?!

Have you linked them?! I've got the Garmin app on my lappy.. That syncs to strava and Garmin connect ;) all I do is plug my Garmin in.

Done it, my January century ticked off.

Didn't feel too good but head down and got on with it, started off foggy and miserable, but as I climbed it cleared and the sun came out, very windy at points and I was wishing for the fog to come back!

Little disappointed in my power numbers, but gotta put in the hard yards, don't get good numbers by eating pies and lounging around!

Aye, as Grudas said.

Up until yesterday I always plugged my Garmin into my pc to sync rides with the added benefit that it would charge it back up again. Yesterday though, somebody on the club ride was telling me that the 810 had Bluetooth (I had no idea!), so now I just pair it with my phone and sync via the Garmin app. Then because Strava is connected with my Garmin account, it appears there shortly after.

Not sure about the issue you are having with the rotating screens though? Mine stay still and you just swipe left/right to see different screens.

Urgh, I got up at 6 this morning to get out for a decent ride before church. It was 3 degrees when I set off and between being a bit tired, a bit underdressed and a bit underfed I felt a bit bonky at around 25 miles in. I limped home, but it certainly wasn't my best ride. Still, 33 miles all told. Roll on spring.
