The only new bike I'd really consider actually under £300 is this: http://www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-300-road-bike-white-id_8239800.html

If you hang around and you're lucky there might eventually be another deal on something like the Merlin PR7, but I wouldn't hold your breath. You can do a lot better for 300-500, otherwise definitely consider looking for something used.

it's definitely worth stretching to the Triban 500SE at £330 imo

£28.49 1 x dhb Active Thermal Padded Bib Tight Large Black

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-active-thermal-padded-bib-tight/

No particular reason for choosing them other than they're cheap, will provide a bit of warmth and certainly at the moment with the weather breaking i hopefully wont be using them that often before its just shorts weather.

Good choice, I've got 3 pairs of them I've been wearing all winter. As soon as ambient gets below 5-6 degrees (certainly with any additional wind chill) I'll be wearing them. I've doubled them up with cheapy chinese fake-castelli's (removed the pad myself) for the below zero (-4 etc) rides and they've been good (had problems with the pad on the cheapys rubbing so good solution for using them). If its warmer than 7-8 (or 5-6 with waterproofs on) I tend to overheat so I'll generally wear the non thermal version (have 2 pairs of these) for wet weather/warmer weather riding. :)

Tip: I did get a pair of the DHB Vaeon Roubaix and they've not as comfortable as the Active's or as good a fit (dissapointed in them really!). Large in the Active is a Large in the Vaeon. But Large in Active bib-shorts is XL in the Flashlight bib-shorts

I went for the flashlight bibs too but decided to go straight for XL and they fit a treat. Came on Monday and very happy , they will be for shortish rides and turbo training mostly

Not been happy with the shifting on my winter bike. Even since fitting a new chain and cassette the downshifting is patchy no matter what I do - therefore

One of my hoods was torn also and new cables never go a miss. You get the whole shebang for £75. When you consider that a lever service is about £30, Campag Cable sets are £25 then it seems a no brainer to just buy a complete new set and try for £30 on Ebay for the old ones. Will fit tonight and hope it runs smooth again :)

Thanks, I have already picked up a second cage & bottle as my rides are getting longer and as it gets warmer I will be drinking more no doubt.

Will be sure to fuel up properly before the ride and take something in on ride before the climb too.

Will definitely pace myself, not expecting a KOM :p

I found that I could never take enough liquid with me so I sprung for some 1ltr bottles hopefully 2 litres is enough.

These days my approach is to always plan a stop somewhere to fill up on liquid. Carrying tons of liquid is kind of annoying and if it's summer no matter how much I take with me I'll run out.

Don't forget the Haribo :p

Out of interest what snacks to people take on board with them?

I've used the free Haribo's from Wiggle to good effect recently.

same even if it's just to grab some bottled water from a corner shop, most people in rural areas you see gardening etc will happily fill a bottle up as well if you ask nicely

They're great quality shorts and for that price they're just the bargain I needed! (thanks whoever linked!) ;)

I dunno, it's £50 extra for a carbon fork, pretty reasonable deal tbh. Around £350 i'd really want Claris for it to be a great deal. There's this which is a bit cheaper but similarly specced:

Bar the fork change there's not much different between the Triban 300 and 500?! Even with the fork change the weight listed hardly changes?

Gotta love some of the Q&A on Rutland:

Question asked by Steve on 20/01/2015 17:33:22

What size bike do I need?

Hi Steve, For a female rider at 5ft8 with a 29" leg I would advise the 50cm frame.
Thanks for your question, Steve.
WTF :rolleyes::p:D:D:D:D:D

Sounds like a no-brainer providing you can shift the old ones to some unsuspecting victim! ;)

I usually 2 bags of haribo, a gel (if I have any - 'emergencies' only) and I try and take at least 2 cereal/morning bars/flapjacks with me if out for more than an hour :)

It's a different colour :p

Well, assuming you mean the 500SE. The 500 has Sora but ti's £430, and for that you can get something similar with a much better frame. The advantage of a carbon fork isn't so much weight as its ability to absorb vibrations. but tbh that's probably a bigger issue from the rear wheel anyway. And steel is good at that too. Just stay away from alu forks (i'm looking at you, base level Allez).

Yeah seen that mount but £40!!! Youmadkedge? No way am I paying that for a piece of metal that costs £1 to make... Sellers market much eh ;)

My favourite bit is the direct link to flyby is puts in the left nav.

I don't have my power meter fitted at the moment so I'm not getting full use out of it.

This was posted the other week, good add on, although very very geeky, the zones thing is the most useful part of it.

I got the official Garmin one, it's fantastic quality but quite bulky and the VIRB is really high on the handlebars (my bars are quite thick)...

I'm kindof waiting for a dual garmin/gopro one (like this) to be available from somewhere like Superstar (where I got my upfront Garmin mount from).

They must have read your mind.

Vibration might be a factor though as the Kedge version of it suffers from and increased amount of of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZftbFqZbws

Little ride from hell last night, was rushing to get to Porsche to get a part for my car so had to go on the hard shoulder of a 4 lane A road at rush hour, then went to go to the hospital to have my infected finger looked at.

On the way and way back, I almost ran over, a bloke who didn't look as he crossed the road, had to put on the anchors, had some idiot in some peugeot swerve towards me then overtake me and chuck on his brakes, and then I almost ran a kid who couldn't have been more than 3 years old, who ran straight out from the pavement and across the road after his parents had plonked him there.... All this in horrendous wind and rain! Joyous!
