If you want big abs lose weight. They're a function of body fat percentage.

For core strength you're best off with a routine like Stronglifts. Doing loads of planks isn't exactly pointless but it's not exactly useful either.

If you can't get to a gym then buy some olympic DBs for home use. It's what I've done.

Well you'll use your abs more doing a push up than you would at 80-90% of your 1rm on a deadlift. Thats not your whole core mind just your abs

If you mean that as a reason to do push ups in order to get abs then I still disagree - shedding body fat will do more to make them visible.

Well I love push ups but do them for core stability not to create abs. I do however aim to have a strong all round core which does involve several of the exercises you have already mentioned. RDL's in particular are great for the glutes/hammies and hence a strong core exercise for me as I cant physically do any sort of squat unfortunately.

Push ups are a great exercise, no arguments there. Situps aren't though (I know you're not saying that but it's worth stating for those that don't know I think).

How come you can't do squats btw?

Powertap batteries ran out today. Lasted about 150-200 hours which was ok for cheap Varta ones, replaced with energisers.

$10 and 2 minutes later batteries replaced, very simple!

What do you lot think of this frame? http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FSVIGLA/viner-gladium-frameset

Grudas - I had a Genesis Day One last year. The older model without discs. I only paid £240 on ebay. I'd look for something like that rather than spend £650 on a new one.

I got rid of it in the end as single speed riding isn't for me :)

aha! ebay might be worth a shot.. or go for kaffenback and build it up, will still be around 600-700!

http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FRHOSTCA/holdsworth-stelvio-frameset is the one I have! love the bike, but I can't compare it to any other carbon frameset really.

rode my triban 3 to work today, rain etc couldn't be arsed getting very wet!

Yes thats what I was trying to get at , sit ups are not a good exercise I agree.

Cant do squats as I have an old Gulf War injury that has pretty much locked my left ankle so I cant bend it more than a couple of degrees 'upwards'. Ok to point my foot though. Even if I try to squat with heels on a plate my knees still dont work together and I end up with the weight shifting to right leg. I cant even walk up a slight incline without rolling my left leg/hip out which in turn messes up all my hips and lower back. Hence why I have to work hard at posture and core just to try and stay in line. At the moment i'm having lower back and knee pains cos i've got out of alignment and i'm trying to straighten it all back up.....

Oh and I got a sizing up from Evans yesterday for this...http://www.evanscycles.com/products/pinnacle/dolomite-six-2015-road-bike-ec071301

XL is my size so it looks like i'll pull the trigger later this week

Cycling isnt too bad though thankfully and also some rowing isnt too bad although I favour my right side quite a bit
