I've been looking ar aero options and I've come to the conclusion that you need a minimum of 50mm rim before you start to get any aero effect. I've got 28mm rims on the Rovals and 3the Miche Xpress on the fixed which is why the 30mm IRD Aero from Wheelsmith aren't really floating my boat.

I've been reasearching the American Classics over the weekend and some people love them, but there are a lot of reports saying they flex a lot and the hubs are made from cheese.

At the moment I'm looking at Fulcrum Racing 1 2-way with tubeless Hutchinson Atom's on. Reviews are excellent. I think I'll just use those as day to day wheels and then get something aero from Fuerte Bici or Wheelsmith next year, around 60mm and tubular I think (tubs are a completely unknown area for me).

It's more than I was planning to spend, but I sold a set of RS20s and the Ribble last night (gutted at how little I got, I obviously need to work on my descriptions and not have my auction finish during the WC final). When I sell me WI freewheel and could have stems I'll only have to add £200 to cover wheels, tyres and the latex gubbins.

Stupid question alert: when you clip to your peddles with 'cleats', how easily do they come off, say for example if you lose your balance and need to put your foot down?

You can adjust the spring tension to make it easier or harder. I have mine set pretty low and it's a doddle; I've had one moment where I couldn't unclip in the last 6000 miles.

You can also get multi release SPDs (or something, not sure of the exact name) which allow you to unclip my moving your foot in a number of different directions . The downside beign that you get more unintended disengagements.

Hmm you've got me at it now Asprilla. Looking at some Zipp 404s. If I was feeling like not going on holiday for the next 3 years (I wouldn't mind but the missus would!) I'd get some Lightweights.

Zipp 606 is where it's at (404 on the front and 808 on the back). Mmmmm, sexy time.

More realistically, I'm thinking of Fuerte Bici 60mm or perhaps some second hand Corima Aero+. Carbon wheels will also mean tubulars, and that opens up a whole new world for me.

Incidentally I'm thinking of a race pair, not carbons for day to day use. I'll stick with my Aksiums for day to day use as they're bulletproof (or certainly pothole resistant).

Also tempted to just go for a new rear disc wheel, although thats the price of a good set of Zipps...Gah. Too much choice.

Carbons don't necessarily mean tubs, though the clinchers do add weight.
