im happily commuting ~120 miles/week! can't complain really :) but xmas is coming and today is my last day at work for this year so yeah ill try to push my self for some rides.. if i can manage to get my bro with me it will be even better! :) that will be on my bmx tho, roadie is too fast for him to keep up lol.

We've been very lucky with the weather here. Last Friday was the first in a long time when it has actually rained stupidly, preventing me from getting out. And for the last three months or so there has been at least one day of the weekend where the weather has been fine!
 
Just make sure that over xmas, if you're not cycling, you're lifting heavy. Then you can honestly say that you're not pigging out; you're bulking :D

Same here. The roads through the back end of Egham, Ashford and Feltham are truly the worst I've ever experienced and they are knocking the hell out of my wheels. I heard rim contact last night and thought it was game over, but amazingly they didn't pinch puncture. It's not just my wheels that are suffering though, my wrists take a proper belting every time too.

had that happen last week! thought that was it.. but nope my tube held up! :O not sure how i managed that :/ I run 90-100psi in my tyres :o
 
First commute in on the bike in 3 weeks this morning, finish at 3.30pm for xmas and i'm planning on 30-50miles tomorrow morning but rain is forecast for mid/late morning so we'll see how that pans out. :(
 
Not long been back from a ride, and I had a spoke snap on the rear wheel. Was coming along the high street, and I accelerated away from the lights quite hard and ping!

I assume it's still ok to ride on? What should I do to check the others? Make sure the 'thing' at the rim is tight?

It will be solid enough to support your weight but it will have a bad buckle in it and probably rub on the brake pads making it difficult to ride. You could probably ride a few miles to get home if you really need to.

Dont adjust the other spokes. When you get a replacement for the broken spoke, you might be able to get it true yourself by adjusting the tension on that 1 spoke. If you adjust the other spokes it will be very difficult to get the wheel true again and you'll probably need to take it to a bike shop.
 
It's okay to ride on but your wheel will be slightly out of true so it's best to get it fixed ASAP.

It's a finer science than just tightening the nipple at the end of the spoke, check some videos on youtube on how to do it. I'd recommend getting the local bike shop to calculate the spoke length for you then just buy a few spares (at about £1 each).
 
Trying to spec myself a new frame geo, want to go compact with canti/mini-v mounts, 700c wheels, CX style, but i cant decide whether to go SS/fixed or geared on it..
 
nah going custom i think, cross check is too horizontal, plus in my size they look awful with squished head tubes

I have a road bike, and my fixed run around and i want something i can go out on if its wet, rainy, canal paths etc, but cant decide if i want another gear or another fixed.
 
I was only suggesting the frame for a custom build.

How about a Cotic Roadrat?

Canti and disc mounts, sloping tube and horizontal dropouts but with a mech hanger. Also has guard and rack mounts.

Had you considered using a rigid mountain bike frame with skinnier wheels and SS or fixed? I built a rigid-framed clunker for an event and it was bulletproof. I always regret not fitting up a set of skinny slicks and using it as a day-to-day **** that could take being slammed up kerbs and stuff. From the build, it seemed that most of the additional weight on a mtb was in the wheels and tyres, because the frame wasn't actually that much heavier.
