Road Cycling Essentials

I'll ask again for the third time :(

What are you experienced road bikers going to use for tyres on icy roads?
My wheel is 700x25 and I've put the Gatorshells on which are also rated for winter cycling but I don't feel confident.
If I'm going to struggle to find winter/ice tyres for that size what can I take my PSI down to because that should help to grip better?

Thanks

I wouldn't ride a bicycle with 700x25c tyres on icy roads. You cannot get studded tyres that narrow, so that's not an option. Lowering the PSI to the minimum (it'll most likely be written on the sidewall) will increase the contact area of the tyre with the road surface, but that's not going to do you much good if all the tyre has contact with is ice...

Anyone else finding it hard out there at the moment? Just feels really draggy to me and like I'm having to put a hell of a lot more effort through my legs to maintain the same speed, then when I turn into a headwind that's not even gale force I'm grinding to a halt.

I know this isn't the answer you want, but the reality is I simply wouldn't ride. The cold doesn't bother me, but losing it on a descent on ice is just not funny. Respect your bones and get a turbo trainer.

If you must ride, then I'd get an MTB and I believe you can get ice/snow studded tyres for those.

Hi people of the OCUK world.

I am after some advice, I am looking at getting a bike under the bike scheme at work. We have to use http://cyclesolutions-shop.co.uk/c4/Hybrid-bikes.aspx

I need a bike that I will ride for at least 4 miles a day, 5 days a week and then up to 15 miles a day in the Summer.

I have linked to the Hybrid page as that is what I think I need. I have not been on a bike for a long, long time, but I am looking to dump the car and move to the bike and train journey to get to work instead and save myself some money.

Any recommendation's?

Budget?

Last Sunday I went out on a club ride and woke up Monday morning in hospital.

Before that happened I was going to keep cycling through winter but if its icy its just not worth it no matter what tyres or pressures you use.

am bit concerned about salt and other stuff they are using on roads and what effect it has on carbon bikes...

That's why I'm hanging my Boardman up for winter now they've started gritting.

Might sound ponsy, but as I've spunked £3k on that thing, I want to look after it!!

:)

might do same...
but mine will have to live outside, but under cover....need to get it cleaned and use something to preserve it...or just bring it inside - still clean it ;)

I must ride and I made a decision to ride to work every day because parking is non existent. I've already got my eyes on this but need to know the frame size first - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170954809667 . It is being sold 2 miles from where I live :D Otherwise I'm nipping to Stafford where there is a second hand place. I really didn't want to become a Mountain Biker but needs must and at least I'll have lights, a bright coat and helmet unlike other Mountain Bikers. Does this mean I can now flout the law and ride where I want and go through lights on red?

I'm finding that as well. I'm noticing my heart rate is higher than it would be for noticeably less performance.

It's probably the cold.

Looks steel framed and very heavy, at least it's a rigid fork though.
