at that level you're also as fit as it's possible to get, so the marginals of groupsets and a bit of bike weight come into play much more

The Flash is nice, but not so great if you're on road bikes. There's no cafe there, just a van of death and maybe an ice cream van.

As a local, I know EXACTLY what you mean! The heart attack van? I often walk round the flash on summer evenings from my house, its really quite pleasant.

Depends. Where is it, how bad is it, did it occur during shipping? You can always take photos and show them to the shop, see what they say.

Oh I have sent photos. TBH I was trying to see if your average bike buyer worries about such things. There is a tiny mark on the frame just under the stem which I noticed in the shop but wasn't fussed about. The clear plastic window on the right shifter has a couple of stress cracks running half way across it and when checking it over I noticed an inch or so scrape in the paint on the front fork.

I didn't do it when transporting because I was super anal enough to lay it flat in the back of my Focus estate wrapped in a double duvet :o Front wheel was no where near the frame wrapped up in packing.

What annoys me is that I collected from a shop so that things like this were picked up and sorted/reported. I might as well have just got a bike delivered which would have given me much more choice. Oh well, live and learn and hopefully the shop will come up on the customer service front. Just bugs me that the last three bikes I've bought have been perfect despite being less than half the cost. Serves me right for not going back there really :o

A single tiny scratch then I'd probably not worry that much but it sounds like more significant damage really. Can you post pictures? Based on your description I'd be kicking up a fuss.

45 turbo session of sweaty hell.

Tightened the trainer 1/2 turn tighter than normal and boy did it show! Felt good as it was the first time after my crash / clean of bike. I'm guessing if i get out at the weekend my thumb may play up a bit as I'm now sure it was more than a stave i had as it is still sore when i over stretch it at times!

Here you go. The first one is really bugging me. That caused me to have a proper look round it (well as proper as you can in a dim garage with a torch) and I spotted the second one. Third one I saw in the shop but is so minor I just thought... meh :p

Glad you're back up and running :)

So cold!

I expect no sympathy from you guys though! 4.6c allegedly this morning, I knew it was cold but all my winter gear is in the guest bedroom. Summer shorts gloves and feet. I froze..... Just no power either due to cold muscles I guess!

Cosmetic damage on a new bike- am I being unreasonable by having a zero tolerance on this?

possibly.
My bike has a small notch of paint chipped where the axle goes into the rear drop out probably done by whoever fitted the wheel

can't say I really cared since it's not in a visible area but if it was painfully obvious I wouldn't be happy.

er yea from those pictures I would have refused to take it, looks like it's been rid for more than a test drive or somewhere stupid like a gravel path at 20mph.

although I'm pretty sure there's not even a scratch on my cx bike even on the down tube and I've heard stuff pinging off it.

is it an ex display model?

Nope brand new but 2014 model. Still has all the frame protection tape on it.

If I had noticed the damage I'd have rejected it but somehow I missed it at the time  Oh well, I'll see what they come back with, if I'm not happy I'll be returning it on the 90 day money back guarantee and going back to where I bought my last bikes from which is what I should have done in the first place.

I'd be unhappy with the condition of that for a brand new bike. The shifter more than the scratches but those are also a bit annoying.

Goodbye Gatorskins
After Saturdays off I have binned the Gatorskins. In fairness they have been reliable albeit heavy and a little sketchy at time but I have stopped being a tight arse and fitted 25mm Michelin Pro 4 Endurances.

Tonight I was pushed for time so opted for a shorter turbo session

I won't lie - I failed to make the end of the last interval and the 3rd one was tough too. Haven't done much VO2 max stuff and it showed!!

I used the drawing round my feet method...! Find something to sit on so your feet dangle close to the floor, rest them over a piece of paper angled straight ahead and draw round your feet.

The direction of the paper is straight ahead, which is where the cleats will point - so you can use the drawing to position your cleats so that with them clipped in, your feet are in their natural position.

I probably need to do this although I'm tempted to ask my LBS to do fit for me, the guy did a basic one when I bought my Defy 1 from there but that wasn't with my cleats and I wasn't in cycling gear... I did my cleats by 'what looked about right' when I got them last July lol! Although I've had no problems I want to check for sure now I'm doing more riding...

First one wouldn't bother me, I know how easily the Sora windows get scratched and cracked anyway (which is why I guess you don't get them on 105), second one I wouldn't be happy with - I'd want that sorted, it looks like a 'bash' and not a 'scuff'. The 3rd looks like a paint mark, I'd be a bit miffed with it but put up with it if it were the only damage, the fact it isn't I'd say I wasn't happy with it! Even if they're not prepared to fix/replace I'd fully want some money back/credit/something else!

-2c here this morning! ;)

Know that feeling though - there was one day last autumn when we had a really warm night and it was 10/11 degrees for my 7am commute, I happily cycled to work in bib shorts and a long sleeve jersey. We promptly then had a wet morning and the temperature dropped around 5-6 degrees before the commute home with some bitterly cold feeling winds! I remember stopping half way home and actually putting my waterproofs on (to avoid calling the mrs to pick me up!)

This weekend I was looking for an 'easy' ~30 mile route to do (my prior weekend ride was a 20 mile killer with far too much climbing!). I came up with this route earlier, a little more distance and climbing than I wanted, but as it's forecast to be a nice day I thought what the hell, I'd take my time...

Part of my distances and 'working up' to 35 miles is a local 'social cycling' group organised by a LBS who normally have 2 rides on a saturday morning, an 18-19mph group and a 16-17mph group who usually do a 32-36 mile route (changes every week) with around 1000m of climbing.

This weekend their ride is this beauty, a shorter one than their normal with a bit less climbing... So I've put my name down! Free hot drink and cake/biscuits afterwards too! My first group ride... :D

My two work commutes today I was feeling it from the Turbo sesh last night so took it easy, a combination of feeling not as bad as I thought and luck with traffic/lights lead to some great average speeds considering the reduced effort!

So I have taken a look at the cycle2work scheme and now is the perfect time for me to opt into the scheme as my flex renewal is open now for the next few weeks. Looking at the calculators and what not it's impressive what savings you can make and am now highly interested.

My route consists of 5 miles into Birmingham, hop onto a train & then 3 miles from Derby station to Sinfin Lane, think the idea of using the canal into Birmingham might not be the best unless I get a really good cyclocross that can take the paths & then the roads.

Lets say I was to opt for £700, at roughly £40 a month, would this be a more reasonable budget for a bike + whatever else I need? I carry my work laptop with me every other week to cover on-call so would have that with me, so would need to factor in carrying a laptop, and such.

I've cancelled my bus pass, so have 30 days to get up and running otherwise I'm walking to Derby, determined to get up and cycling.

Yup, you could get a pretty decent commuter bike for about £500-600 and a good set of accessories for £200 i think. Lot of options. Carrying a laptop is tricky, easiest way is probably to get a pannier bag and rack so you don't have to have a backpack on the whole way.

You plan on taking a bike onto a train? most services make you reserve a space in the carriage in advance unless it's a folding bike, other than that some do allow first come first reserved but there's so few bike spaces on most trains

cyclocross are awesome but probably overkill for the type of terrain I'm imagining .

don't get a hybrid no matter what!

Yeah it is the principal of it really. I bought it as new not shop soiled or blemished. TBH that scratch on the fork is there for good. The paint is a matte metallic graphite, there is no way it can be touched up. I know I'm a picky sod but I do installations of equipment for a living, if we had kit like that we wouldn't just let the customer take ownership of it without saying anything.

Is a hybrid really that much of a poor choice for a short commute? To me they seem pretty suitable for that type of use which is why I bought one for exactly that purpose back in 2011.
